Every day the mails carry tons of requests for donations for one cause or another, some worthy, some questionable.

But recently several hundred Chicagoans received a plea that some might consider, well, kind of odd.

A real estate woman who got one of the letters passed it along and asked: "Can you believe this?"

It was sent by Steven J. Thayer, a 30-year-old lawyer, who says he specializes in helping entrepreneurs raise money to start businesses.

And he began by describing a man named Stan who came to him a couple of years ago with a plan to open a carwash on the border of Chicago and the suburb of Calumet Park.

"Like most of our entrepreneurial clients," Thayer wrote, "Stan was enthusiastic about pursuing his dream. Stan's dream was to build the largest multipurpose carwash facility in the country.

"The carwash would include the longest tunnel wash, an 11 bay self wash, a gas station, an oil and lube shop and a convenience mart.

"At the time, Stan only had sketches of the proposed design of the project. He had spent the last 15 years contemplating the concept and was finally ready to pursue his dream.

"The only problem is that Stan's dream carwash cost over $2.8 million."

Thayer then went on to describe Stan's tireless efforts to raise the money with which to build the biggest multipurpose carwash in the country: his dealings with the Small Business Administration, oil companies, the land owner, banks, friends, relatives and other potential investors.

". . . Numerous hours of passionate labor and tears from Stan, his family and his closest friends."

As Thayer described Stan's gripping quest to build the nation's biggest multipurpose carwash, it sounded almost like something out of "The Right Stuff," the story of our astronauts.

"Stan was just one letter away from closing on a lifelong dream . . ."

Then came this one letter, the one from the Small Business Administration. But it said, nope, there was too much debt and not enough equity.

"On April 22, 1996," Thayer wrote, "with the stroke of a pen, the project died.

"Never in my life have I seen a person work so hard to pursue a dream, overcome so many obstacles, and fail. If I can help it, Stan will not be the first."

Then came the pitch.

"My goal in writing this letter is to appeal to the entrepreneurial spirit inside each of us. The Grandstand Auto Bath is the epitome of the entrepreneurial dream. It's the project that could never happen, the dream that would never come true.

"With your help the dream can come true. Together we can make it happen. My plan is simple, we need to raise enough money to balance out the project. My guess is that we only need a few hundred thousand dollars to balance out the project, although the more the better to cover unforeseen contingencies. I believe a fair amount for a contribution to such an entrepreneurial dream would be about $10 a person, although larger contributions are always welcome.

"The logistics are also very simple. If you would like to make a contribution, send a $10 check to (address). We will turn the money over to Stan as needed to keep the project moving.

"Please keep in mind that some of your contributions will go toward repaying Stan's personal debt that helped keep the project, Stan and his family alive for the past few years.

"Your contributions are not tax deductible and are considered a personal gift to Stan. If we don't raise enough money to complete the project, we will still turn the funds over to Stan to help him get his life reorganized. He certainly deserves it. -- Mike Royko, Chicago Tribune, 5/30/1996

A heavy thunder shower had just passed adding a dramatic sky to frame the lighthouse.

In a letter dated 5th November 1834 the Donaghadee Harbour Commissioners informed the Ballast Board that they were prepared to exhibit a light on the south pier and requested the Board to take it under their care. Trinity House were written to for their concurrence but they promptly declined to sanction, referring the Ballast Board to page 75 of a report from the Select Committee of the House of Commons in connection with light dues. Towards the end of the following year, 1835, the Treasury approached the Board about Donaghadee Lighthouse and the Treasury were informed that the Board was willing to take over the light on receiving a formal order to that effect from the Treasury. The latter replied on 11th January 1836 authorising the Ballast Board to take charge of the light, which they accordingly did, and the light was established later in 1836 with a fixed character, that is non flashing showing red mainly to seaward and white over the harbour and towards Belfast Lough.

The tower is built of cut limestone, fluted, and in its early days was unpainted in natural grey colour. Today the tower, including the lantern and dome, is painted white with a black plinth, a decision which was taken some time between 1869 and 1875.

A dwelling was suggested for the keeper in 1841 and land near the root of the pier was rented from the Board of Works, but the ground became a yard for maintenance of local Donaghadee Sound buoys and the dwelling was not built until 1864. In the mean time the keeper continued to live in a house in the town rented by the Ballast Board.

A serious fire damaged the optic and lantern on the 12th May 1900 and a temporary light had to be shown whilst a new optic was obtained and the damaged lantern repaired. This was completed by September of the same year.

Conversion to unwatched electric was effected from 2nd October 1934, Donaghadee thus having the distinction of being the first Irish Lighthouse to be converted to electric. Chaine Tower at Larne followed the next year and Tuskar in 1938.

The character of the new light was Isophase, white every four seconds and the red sector was discontinued. The power was considerably increased from less than 1,000 to 20,000 candelas.

A standby acetylene light was fitted to the lamp changer which would come into operation automatically if the lamp or electric supply should fail.

In April 1967 an automatic standby to mains generator was installed in the base of the tower, a red sector was re-established (326° to shore) and a new lamp changer with two electric lamps was fitted into the optic. The standby acetylene was discontinued. These alterations were in conjunction with the withdrawal of the Skulmartin lightvessel and establishment of a high focal plane buoy in its stead.

During 1950 the Ministry of Commerce approached the Commissioners for permission to erect a siren fog signal to be sounded when local, mainly fishing boats, would be returning to the harbour during fog. This was granted together with Board of Trade sanction and the siren was mounted on the lantern balcony railing. However it did not come into operation until 1953 and is controlled from the Harbour Board Office.

Hi,

I was working on building a Matrix trilogy inspired adventure map, but my real life work is stalling the project, so instead of letting it sit, I wanted to share the texture pack and what I have started of the map.

porkshanks.deviantart.com/art/Aftermath-Texture-Pack-WIP-...

The texture pack is 32 x 32 so you will have to use a modloader to run it.

I'm drawing over a copy of "Last Days" which was made by a few different artists, but the terrain.png is about 95% finished, and when its done, this pack will be *completely* different from Last Days, so please pardon the work-in-progress aspect of it, for now.

dl.dropbox.com/u/20781371/4FTERM4TH/level.dat

It was not really designed to be used as a "survival mode" texture pack, although I do include some textures near the bottom for eventually making a hydrid texture map that can be. If you do check it out, please take a look at what the finished map looks like.

To my friends here on flickr we are about to go through a Cat 5 hurricane here in Florida. I live in central Florida, and the storm is predicted to go through us. This storm is worse than Hurricane Andrew. It is very possible that I along with many of my Floridians will be homeless. Please pray for Miami where the storm is predicted to come in on. Then travel up the state. Again please remember us in your prayers. God Bless You

The Grand People’s Study House is the largest Korean-style building built under the grand plan of President Kim Il Sung. After only 21 months of construction it was opened in April, 1982 with a total floor space of 100,000 sq. m. in over 600 rooms with a total seating capacity of more than 5,000. The storage capacity of the Study House is 30 million volumes according to the guides.

Located on Namsan Hill in the Central District of Pyongyang, it is open free of charge to any citizen over 17 years of age. On either side of the main building are two clocks that ring with the sound of “Song of General Kim Il Sung”.

Official speech says:

"There is the Grand People's Study House in Pyongyang which offers books of various kinds for public perusal and organizes varied forms of educations.

These years the house has channeled much effort into educational service so that lots of working people may acquire knowledge of various fields in a short span of time.

In particular, the short course for re-education gives broad knowledge of latest scientific and technical issues raised in various sectors of the national economy.

Through the regular short course for re-education, people receive many-sided information lectures.

Popular are departmental lectures and video shows dealing with scientific and technological issues badly needed for the developing reality.

Meanwhile, lecturers of the house find themselves in various sectors of the national economy including industrial establishments to give on-spot lectures for the purpose of solving diverse scientific and technological problems arising in practice.

Such teaching methods help scientists and technicians settle scientific and technological problems arising in the modernization of production processes.

Books on socio-political life, medical science, architecture, light industry, fisheries, biology and horticulture, foreign magazines, translated books and other books are available from the house.

The Grand People's Study House with a collecting capacity of tens of million volumes is a good education centre for disseminating varied know-how among the working people of all strata. "

A request to one of the wait staff to take a picture of my son and I inside the cafe was responded to with a very polite and friendly request to wait a little as he was to fetch the orders of some of the other diners. Fair enough. We therefore decided to explore the totally empty other side of the building. Climbing a couple of steps to the central landing, we caw a large empty restaurant opposite. This is a view of the landing. The empty cafe is to our left, and the restaurant we'd just had our soup in is to our right. (Montreal, Canada, Dec. 2012)

Project Title: Disney on Demand

Created: 11/20/2007

Media: CD - Data

Description:

In response to several requests, I created the “Disney on Demand” service to quickly provide music from JLH Audio Archive. The program lasted for several years until the service went completely on-line in 2008. This transition decreased delivery from weeks to hours!

Design:

Utilizing artwork from the “Year of Million Dreams” campaign, this label is actually the third and final re-design of the project started in 2005.

Wells in NYC? Given the city's plentiful supply of water from upstate reservoirs, I'm always a little surprised when I see a house with its own well.

Going off on a bit of a tangent, I've read that some matzo makers in the city have wells because they believe chemically treated municipal water cannot be used to make matzo. (Without treatment, however, some of the well water doesn't meet state water quality standards, which seems to suggest they shouldn't be making matzo with it.) Streit's, on the other hand, has long used city tap water to make its matzos — although perhaps not for much longer, as the company has decided to close its iconic factory on the Lower East Side and move its operations elsewhere.

After all the industrial activity that's taken place in the city over the years, you might assume the groundwater here would be too polluted to be usable, at least as drinking water. That's certainly true in many areas, but not all: local wells were used to supply drinking water to parts of southeastern Queens as recently as 2007, and they will be put into service again sometime around 2022 when the Delaware Aqueduct is shut down for several months so a new tunnel bypassing a leaky section can be connected to it. And while we're on the subject of wells, it's also worth noting that the non-NYC portion of Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties) gets virtually all of its water from wells drilled into the island's aquifers.
