5054. A request from a London viewer has given us a chance to correct an old misjudgment. We posted a cropped version of this wonderful image by the late Roger Eastwood of HMAS QUEENBOROUGH in the Thames in 1955, not quite realizing it was a much lower resolution version than the same wider, uncropped image we have here.

QUEENBOROUGH is being passed by the Thames passenger launch ABERCORN here in 1955, and Ben of the River Thames Flickr photostream [rhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/31235337@N00/[ used to travel to work on her in the 1990s! Ben was seeking a larger image, we hope this fills that request.

As we have now mentioned many times, this visit by QUEENBOROUGH, which had been on training deployment to the Joint Anti-submarine Warfare School in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, was actually the first time a RAN vessel had been up the Thames.

No doubt for that reason, we eventually received or came across quite a few photos of this event including two here from the HMAS CERBERUS Museum, starting at pic NO 2206 :

Above is a screenshot of a friend request I just sent (see note in rectangle above), to someone whose name need not be disclosed at this point (I'd have to know he was okay with that, first); no idea if he'll choose to accept, but I had to at least try.

The Story:

Trying to reconstruct some events from my high school years on Kauai, it occurred to me that one of our old roommates might be on Facebook. Sure, he was a "corrupting influence," but I was already plenty corrupted by that point (to wit: my mother's gift, for my 16th birthday, of my own little purple wizard pipe and pot stash, hiked out of the Kalalou Valley especially for me! Yay!*), and as the adults in that particular context went, he was one of the good guys.

He was, among other things, a painter and a nerd, and that was cool. Stoner or not, he helped me with my homework, in an environment in which such help was hard to come by. (I also vaguely recall him trying to set up some sort of very early type of computer for me... it was pretty arcane, a thing that somehow plugged into a television and allowed one to do rudimentary programs of some sort... and I'm trying to remember how that worked out, because most of the years I lived on Kauai, we didn't have a television at all, so maybe we borrowed one? Or something.)

* The "yay" is sarcastic.

Bona Fide was designed in 1899 by Charles Sibbick and built at the Isle of Wright.

Bona Fide is a Gaff rigged Cutter designed to the Godinet Rule by Charles Sibbick, upon request of J. Howard Taylor in order to take part in the races of the Paris Olimpic Games, in May 1900.

Built by Sibbick at his Albert Yard in Cowes – Isle of White in little more than two months, Bona Fide was launched in November 1899: 29’2” long on the waterline, with 15’5” of overhangs, on a beam of 8’6”, 5,180 Lbs. of her 10,000 Lbs. displacement in her bulb keel and an impressive 1,550 sq. ft. of sail. The lines of Bona Fide, her slender, her canoe-shaped hull (in short a skimming-dish of a yacht) presaged developments of a century.

During the Paris Olimpic Games of 1900 (the first Games in which sail races were included) Bona Fide was first in her class (3-10 ton.).

The following year, Taylor sold Bona Fide to Giovanni Brambilla who won in local regattas. The Magazines and Newspapers described Bona Fide like a fashionable and incredibly fast yacht, but by 1915 she had disappeared from the records. In 1962 the old gaff rig was dumped in favour of a Bermudan rig.

In Autumn 1999, a yachtsman already owner of the Laurent Giles Bermudan Cutter CERIDA, bought BONA FIDE. The restoration started in Winter 1999 at Cantiere Navale dell’Argentario with Federico Nardi as Project Manager and the Americas’ Cup Yacht Designer Dug Peterson as supervisor. The Restoration taken 3 years and Bona Fide was re-launched in June 2003. She is only boat built under Godinet Rule that have survived: therefore she is also a piece of French History. (Vela Classica Menorca)

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

Wong Tai Sin Temple (Chinese: 黃大仙祠; Jyutping: wong4 daai6 sin1 ci4) is a well known shrine and major tourist attraction in Hong Kong.[1] It is dedicated to Wong Tai Sin, or the Great Immortal Wong.[2] The 18,000-m² Taoist temple is famed for the many prayers answered: "What you request is what you get" (有求必應) via a practice called kau cim. The temple is located on the southern side of Lion Rock in the north of Kowloon.

In the early 20th century, Leung Renyan (梁仁菴) spread the influence of Wong Tai Sin from Xiqiao Mountain in Nanhai, Guangdong Province of China to Wan Chai in Hong Kong.

Leung arrived in Hong Kong in 1915. He rented an apartment in Wan Chai, and set up an altar in his apartment. Later he opened an herbal medicine shop nearby and moved the altar to the back of the shop. Customers coming to his shop could pray at Wong Tai Sin's altar and seek advice for their ailments. Leung would then fill their prescriptions. We can assume that healing did take place, as the popularity of Wong Tai Sin began to grow.

However, in 1918, Leung's shop was destroyed by fire. In 1921, Leung said that he received a message from Wong Tai Sin instructing him to construct a new shrine. Leung Renyan and his Taoist fellow were advised to start walking from Kowloon City Pier towards the north with 3,000 steps. When they arrived at Chuk Yuen Village (竹園村), they put a piece of bamboo into the ground as a mark. Then they consulted Wong Tai Sin via the process of " Fu Ji " (扶乩). They were told that it was a good site. Wong Tai Sin also taught them to determine the would-be centre of the Temple by 3 Chinese feet (approximately 1 metre) on the right and 3 Chinese feet (approximately 1 metre) backwards of the mark and the would-be temple was named as "Chik Chung Sin Shrine" (赤松仙館) (literally : the Red Pine Fairy Shrine). The Taoist priests were also asked to start the construction of the shrine on 24th of the sixth lunar month by one of the Taoist Gods, Wen Chang Di (文昌帝) via the process of "Fu Ji". Eventually the shrine was completed and was officiated on the 20th of the seventh lunar month. In the same year, on the 23rd of the eighth lunar month, during the celebration of the birthday of Wong Tai Sin, the altar was named as "Pu Yi Tan" (普宜壇) by the most superior Taoist God, Yu Di (玉帝) via the process of "Fu Ji". Later on, the other Taoist God, Wen Chang Di gave the name of the premises as "Sik Sik Yuen" (嗇色園) via the process of "Fu Ji". Meanwhile, the managing body, Sik Sik Yuen was established. In 1925, the shrine was renamed as "Chik Chung Wong Sin Hall" (赤松黃仙祠) (literally : the Red Pine Wong Fairy Hall) by Taoist Fairy, Lu Ju (呂祖) through the process of "Fu Ji". Since then, the name "Chik Chung Wong Sin Hall" has replaced the original name. According to the then regulations, Sik Sik Yuen used to be a private shrine and only Taoists or their family members were allowed. It was not until 1934, Sik Sik Yuen formally applied to the government for opening the Temple to the public during the 1st lunar month of every Chinese New Year. However, in 1956 Sik Sik Yuen was allowed to open completely to the public.

In 1956, the government proposed to reclaim the temple for public housing development. Chairman Wong Wan Tin's pushed for the temple to remain open.[3] Charging a 10-cent admission fee at the main entrance, fees were donated to the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. To facilitate administration and management, the temple was registered as a limited company of charitable nature in 1965, and was granted the immunity of not having to add the word "Limited" to the organisation's name.[3]

Because of its historic significance, the Temple is graded as a Grade I historic building.[

The Wong Tai Sin Temple’s claim to ‘make every wish come true upon request’ might have something to do with its popularity. Home to three religions (Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism) its natural setting and beautifully ornamented buildings make it as much a scenic attraction as an important religious centre.

The temple commemorates the famous monk of yore, Wong Tai Sin (also known as Huang Chu-ping), who was born in the 4th century and became a deity at Heng Shan (Red Pine Hill). In 1915, Taoist priest Liang Ren-an carried a sacred portrait of Wong Tai Sin from Guangdong in southern China to Hong Kong. Now housing this precious portrait, the Wong Tai Sin Temple is where worshippers pray for good fortune through offerings, divine guidance and fortune telling.

by request, this is a simplified diagram of how to set up continuous lighting via the battery. this is not a comprehensive diagram of all the mods.

note:

after comparing with the stock toy, mods 1 and 3 affect the light pattern of the toy to flash all on or off at the same time. if that is acceptable, this is the way to do it. if you would like to keep the light pattern, inline diodes need to be added to each led path, between the solder points on the toy circuit board and the dpdt switch. further investigation on this might be needed.

the leds are illustrated just to show the connections. they don't need to be soldered.

what needs to be soldered are:

1. the indicated open solder pads on the circuit board. since these are all connected via a jumper they all get connected to the ground side of the mod switch, which leads to

2. the ground battery terminal closest to the inner ring.

3.the positive battery terminal gets soldered to the positive side of the mod switch

4. the positive side of the mod switch gets soldered to a positive terminal on the circuit board.

everything coming out of or into the mod switch in this diagram is a wire added to the toy to make the connection. that's eight wires for the leds, two positive wires, and one ground wire.

refer to the photos for the exact locations of these solder points and further details on how it was done. kthxbai

Enhanced make up from standard on request.

I had a request to show the inside of this one.... I hope it's clearer. Each section is just plates and two slopes. Each section is then connected to one of those bricks with studs on each side. I kind of thought that was cheating, as generally I've been having all the patterns lie flat, and this one doesn't, though it would work really well connected to a baseplate, so I guess it's fine... This is also somewhat defective in that it isn't a perfect square, but is off by 1/5 a stud in the middle of each side.

Blah blah blah blah blah.... :-) (Sorry, I could babble on for a long time...)
