Candid Photography for MCPS Office of Communications

An old temporary Request Bus Stop sign seen outside a house near Cambridge.

Aboard the Casco Bay Ferry, coming from Portland, the "wrong way" around House Island toward Peaks Island, Maine USA.

House Island is a private island in Portland Harbor in Casco Bay, Maine, USA. It is part of the City of Portland. The island is only accessible by boat. Public access is prohibited, except for an on request tour sanctioned by the island's owners. House Island includes three buildings on the east side and Fort Scammel on the west side. The buildings are used as summer residences. The island's name derives from the site of an early European house, believed that built by Capt. Christopher Levett, an English explorer of the region. …

Henry A. S. Dearborn built Fort Scammel on the island in 1808 as part of the national second system of fortifications. It was named after Alexander Scammell, Adjutant general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, who was killed in action during the Battle of Yorktown. The fort was designed for harbor defense, with cannon batteries designed to protect the main shipping channel into Portland harbor, along with Fort Preble. In the 1840s–1870s, as part of the national third system of fortifications, Fort Scammel was modernized. Thomas Lincoln Casey, known for his work on the Washington Monument rebuilt the fort in 1862 at the time of the American Civil War. Of all the forts in Casco Bay, Fort Scammel was the only fort to fire a shot and be fired upon in battle, in early August, 1813. …

The island was later the site of an immigration quarantine station from 1907 to 1937, and was considered the 'Ellis Island of the North'. The quarantine station was busiest in the early 1920s, after the adoption of the Emergency Quota Act, which restricted the number of immigrants who could enter the country. In November 1923, the ships President Polk and George Washington were diverted from New York City to Portland and 218 immigrants from those ships were quarantined at the station.

The island was considered "ideal" by immigration officials. A Grand Trunk Railway station was located at the docks in Portland, allowing easy rail access for immigrants arriving in Portland. Additionally, William Husband, Commissioner General of United States Immigration, said the whole island was secure and "The whole of House Island was available in that case, instead of those detained being obliged to go out under guard with only few patches of green grass upon which they might set foot, as at some other places."

The 1920 brick detention barracks have been demolished, but the original 1907 buildings remain, including the doctor's house, the detention barracks, and the quarantine hospital. – Source: from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

• On June 21, 2012, the WSJ reported the island for sale for $4.9m. Here's a link to a short video with glimpses of the island and structures.

The Nature Conservancy hosts a group of roughly 30 visitors for a vernal pool hike at Forest Pools Preserve, adjacent to Kings Gap State Park in Cumberland County, Pa., on March 25, 2016. Because vernal pools, or seasonal wetlands, dry up every year, they don't harbor fish and thus are critical habitat for many amphibian species. (Photo by Will Parson/Chesapeake Bay Program)

At the request of Merrily Me, here is the pattern for the Christmas Snow 3d scene. The base and back were done on the large squares while the snow drifts and the tree are done on the little boards. The blacked-out squares are empty squares (slots). Once all the pieces are ironed, they fit into the slots (although I learned not to over iron as the tabs are harder to get into the slots). I glued the pieces once they were placed (as I can be a klutz at times - LOL). I used the miniature lights that are often sold when crafts stores sell miniature houses.

This picture shows how both half-plate offsets (4LDU) in 10219 Maersk Train are achieved.

The central part is 1 stud and 2 bricks (68LDU) long till the slopes begin.

The sides are 1 plate and 2 bricks (56LDU) long till the slopes begin.

The difference is 12LDU, which is the space required ao that cheese slopes can be used without the normal cheese slope offset. (16LDU-4LDU)

The back (top left picture) is desgined in a 24LDU + 16LDU = 40LDU system, matching stud dimensions of 20LDU, 40LDU, 60LDU, 80LDU, ...

The central back part has a half-plate offset.

Both times the offset is created by the use of a dark bley bracket 1x2 / 2x2.

I hope the rest of you find it interesting. Some were used by American military and some were used at airports. In Australia they were heavy duty pickups for farmers.

A few days ago Zivity CEO @cyantist put out a request for paparazzi extras for a photo shoot for www.zivity.com. I had some time before I left town so I went down there to help. The photo shoot was to show off their new t-shirt designs.

The best part wasn't the models (though they were gorgeous)… it was running into one of the other 'paparazzi'. He looked familiar, and at some point made a reference to Iraq, further cluing me in. It turns out it was Ryan Lackey, famous founder of the now defunct HavenCo and war-zone internet plumber.

Ryan worked with the Synergy Strike Force team in Afghanistan, and he stayed in our guesthouse in Jalalabad. He was there connecting up internet for a hospital we're associated with. He's been to our Tiki Bar.

It turns out he used to be roomates with @cyantist way back in the day and was in SF.

It's not everyday I run into someone else who's been to the Taj, much less at the same time as models.

Vesuvio Café in North Beach, San Francisco.

Photographs in this collection have been produced by Heather Do, Connor Rowe, Kathleen Markham, Alison Lowrie, Kenneth Chiu, Katie Salmond, Diana Chavez, Elena Toffalori, Ashley Vink, Aimee O'Dea, Liz Dolinar, Allison Barden, Justine Khoury, Daniele Alaniz-Roux, and Justin Thach at the request of Michael Ashley for the UC Berkeley Anthropology 136e class, Spring 2011. The purpose was to digitally document the cultural heritage of Vesuvio Café to not only document the cultural history embeded into the ageless walls but also to connect spatially the symbiotic relationship that preserves the legacy of beatnik culture today.

Vesuvio Cafe, (37.79757°N 122.40625°W), located in the North Beach region of San Francisco Bay, is a cultural bastion preserving the cultural heritage of bohemian era and the beatnik culture that generated its establishment by Henri Lenoir in 1949 and made infamous by the renown authors such as Jack Kerouac from which the adjacent alley is named. The building in which the bar is housed is otherwise known as the Cavalri building built in 1913 and expanded to a second story in 1918 and designed by Zanolini with Italian Renaissance revival elements. The transient existence of these unkempt literary members and their constituents is reflected in the liminal location of the former saloon restaurant at the border between the vagrant Chinese- Italian communities; by 1970[1], most of the diverse cultures regressed into economical housing . Vesuvio Café despite its rich history back to the 1950’s , are not historically preserved site; in fact, they were rented until 1999[2] by managers Chris and Janet Clyde, whose proprietary hopes to protect the building from other commercial interest. Over the years, Vesuvio has undergone its share of renovations and damages such as the 1999 retrofitting for earthquake safety or even the 1973 damage dealt to the building by an errant bus[3]. Over the years, the "I'll never forget after the retro-fitting, one man came in, he was about 55 years old and in a business suit," Clyde said. "He actually had tears in his eyes when he looked at the place. He said, `You didn't change anything.' Vesuvio has kept its character as a neighborhood bar.”[4]

Photographs in this collection were shot on April 11, 2011 between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm Pacific Time under variable natural lighting due to cloudy skies with intermittent periods of morning exposure conditions. Photos were captured on the following cameras: Canon DSLR XTI/T2i, S95, Sony Cybershot, Canon Powershot. Lenses used include: Macro 60mm, Telephoto 70-200, Canon T2i 18-55mm, Canon XTI 17-85mm. A tripod was used for timelapse, Gigapan, macro, telephoto, HDR, and photogrammetry shots. iPhones were also used for documentation shots and Geo-tagging. The photos were post-processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.

Someone on DOA requested specific pics and I hope these help. The hopeful hybrid was a bronze Neptune (I think) head on an RS Yi body in dark tan. The dark tan of RS is more brown than the bronze of Granado. Would need a custom color. The Granado head is much smaller than the Impldoll Joshua head I have on the Yi, but neck and shoulders are about the same. He jight be slightly pinheaded, but hair may balance that.

Also, added pics of IH brown next to bronze, which is a very close match though not exact. Maybe a SID would work...? I have a SID or 2. I will need to check that.

As requested, I have textured the background
