Vesuvio Café in North Beach, San Francisco.

Photographs in this collection have been produced by Heather Do, Connor Rowe, Kathleen Markham, Alison Lowrie, Kenneth Chiu, Katie Salmond, Diana Chavez, Elena Toffalori, Ashley Vink, Aimee O'Dea, Liz Dolinar, Allison Barden, Justine Khoury, Daniele Alaniz-Roux, and Justin Thach at the request of Michael Ashley for the UC Berkeley Anthropology 136e class, Spring 2011. The purpose was to digitally document the cultural heritage of Vesuvio Café to not only document the cultural history embeded into the ageless walls but also to connect spatially the symbiotic relationship that preserves the legacy of beatnik culture today.

Vesuvio Cafe, (37.79757°N 122.40625°W), located in the North Beach region of San Francisco Bay, is a cultural bastion preserving the cultural heritage of bohemian era and the beatnik culture that generated its establishment by Henri Lenoir in 1949 and made infamous by the renown authors such as Jack Kerouac from which the adjacent alley is named. The building in which the bar is housed is otherwise known as the Cavalri building built in 1913 and expanded to a second story in 1918 and designed by Zanolini with Italian Renaissance revival elements. The transient existence of these unkempt literary members and their constituents is reflected in the liminal location of the former saloon restaurant at the border between the vagrant Chinese- Italian communities; by 1970[1], most of the diverse cultures regressed into economical housing . Vesuvio Café despite its rich history back to the 1950’s , are not historically preserved site; in fact, they were rented until 1999[2] by managers Chris and Janet Clyde, whose proprietary hopes to protect the building from other commercial interest. Over the years, Vesuvio has undergone its share of renovations and damages such as the 1999 retrofitting for earthquake safety or even the 1973 damage dealt to the building by an errant bus[3]. Over the years, the "I'll never forget after the retro-fitting, one man came in, he was about 55 years old and in a business suit," Clyde said. "He actually had tears in his eyes when he looked at the place. He said, `You didn't change anything.' Vesuvio has kept its character as a neighborhood bar.”[4]

Photographs in this collection were shot on April 11, 2011 between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm Pacific Time under variable natural lighting due to cloudy skies with intermittent periods of morning exposure conditions. Photos were captured on the following cameras: Canon DSLR XTI/T2i, S95, Sony Cybershot, Canon Powershot. Lenses used include: Macro 60mm, Telephoto 70-200, Canon T2i 18-55mm, Canon XTI 17-85mm. A tripod was used for timelapse, Gigapan, macro, telephoto, HDR, and photogrammetry shots. iPhones were also used for documentation shots and Geo-tagging. The photos were post-processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.

The image of the venerated Patroness of the town has been known to be miraculous. Year- round, pilgrims from far and wide pay homage to the Lady in her shrine. Many come to supplicate special favors and then return to thank Her and fulfill their vows as devotees whose prayers have been answered.

A second matriarchal feast is celebrated in the last Sunday of January to celebrate the many miracles of the Virgen de la Asuncion of Dauis. Foremost of which happened on August 31, 1928. Accordingly, many young girls who were playing before the image of our lady seen her waving her hands as if bidding them to come near Her.

In several occasions, devotees found the vestment of the image full of “amorseco”. Many believed the lady must have gotten down from her pedestal occasionally to visit them in their homes and farms.

Devotees from as far as Dalaguete in Cebu province would often attend the virgin’s feast day every August 15th . It was from the Dalagueteños where stories of the lady’s sojourn and blessings were gathered. One of the stories tells of a man who possessed great healing to a “camiseta” he found in his fishing boat after a lady passenger whom he accommodated disembarked at Mariveles (former name of Dauis). Up to this time, Dalagueteños continued to venerate and pay homage to Our Lady of the Assumption as a manifestation of their gratitude and appreciation after being healed of their ailments through the “camiseta”.

HISTORY OF THE DEVOTION TO THE VIRGEN DE LA ASUNCION OF DAUIS, BOHOL

A tale has it that Dauis was once called "Mariveles", based on a story of the statue or image of Our Lady of the Assumption, the town’s patroness who was said to have requested an unnamed fisherman to take her to this island called “Mariveles” . When they neared the coast, the lady said, “duol na ang Mariveles” (We are nearing Mariveles).

She got off the boat and went toward the beach where the palms now abound in Poblacion, Dauis. The fisherman revealed that the lady passenger disappeared and in her place saw an object, the image of which evoked the likeness of his passenger. It has been said that the name of the place is derived from the word “Lawis” which means a “sand bar”. It may also come from the word “dawi” which means “a fish biting the bait of a fishing hook and line.”

Recorded history of Dauis began with the arrival of two Jesuit priests, Fr. Diego de Ayala and Fr. Joseph Gragorio. Since then, there was a succession of Jesuit missionaries until 1786, and were later replaced by the Augustinian Recollect fathers until 1888. Since then, Filipino priests have taken over.

The 18th century Dauis Church, dedicated to the “La Señora de la Asuncion” or Our Lady of the Assumption underwent so many changes starting from its inception when the first Spanish missionaries arrived in the town in 1697. The church was believed to be built of light materials.

The church was consecrated by Bishop Juan Gorordo of Cebu on August 23, 1923. 61 years after Fr. Saldana laid its cornerstone, a cross was installed over the pediment in the year 1924. The convent constructed in 1884 was eventually renovated and utilized as Formation and Day Care Centers.

The church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a center for Marian pilgrimages emanating from the different towns of Bohol. On certain occasions, the Tagbilaran faithful hike the distance from their city to the site to invoke special petitions or mainly to honor Our Lady of the Assumption.

A well, known for its water’s healing power, lies at the foot of the main altar. Local history tells that this well originated from the Spanish era. Pirates often attacked Christian settlements and it was during one such attack that the people took refuge behind locked doors of the church. Besieged by the enemy for days, the people run out of food and water. The well miraculously sprang up and since then has become the source of drinking water for the populace nearby, especially during droughts. The water tastes truly fresh, despite the well’s closeness to the seashore.

The image of the patron saint, Our Lady of the Assumption, is famed to be miraculous, too. (So many petitions of her devotees are granted!) Tales from time to time crop up that the patron saint’s attire is filled with amorsico, a vexing weed. The faithful believe that their Mother goes around Her domain as she watches over Her children. Dauis church is a pilgrimage site, with the pilgrims carrying empty containers to take home water from the miraculous well.

In 2004, the Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption was declared a Shrine honoring the patroness not only of Dauis but for the whole province of Bohol.

AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM ET HONOREM BEATAE MARIAE VIRGINIS...

Someone on DOA requested specific pics and I hope these help. The hopeful hybrid was a bronze Neptune (I think) head on an RS Yi body in dark tan. The dark tan of RS is more brown than the bronze of Granado. Would need a custom color. The Granado head is much smaller than the Impldoll Joshua head I have on the Yi, but neck and shoulders are about the same. He jight be slightly pinheaded, but hair may balance that.

Also, added pics of IH brown next to bronze, which is a very close match though not exact. Maybe a SID would work...? I have a SID or 2. I will need to check that.

"Wait a minute." Jerome requests, "Before you go Alondra was supposed to send up someone to entertain us, surely you can wait a few minutes."

Rikki sighs, "Wasn't Alondra supposed to send her like ten minutes ago? I don't want to burn too much time, besides I still need to pack my bag."

"I'll check in." Jerome states before moving his eyes to the left, then looking up which seems to dial Alondra.

"Hello Boss." Alondra answers.

YOU CHOOSE:

A. "Where's the girl you promised me? Rikki's getting impatient."

B. "Too late to make a special request?"

C. "Status update."

D. Dynamic Response.

On April 6 1910, land agent and broker W E Simes of Christchurch wrote to Internal Affairs to see if he was allowed to be auctioneer at a church raffle. Instead of a simple answer, Internal Affairs referred him to the last section of clause 17 of the 1908 Auctioneers Act, Consolidates Statues No. 10.

The "Lock Up The Year" Royal Canal Trail Marathon was held on the banks of the Royal Canal from Moyvalley, Co. Kildare to Leixlip, Co. Kildare on Tuesday 31st December 2012 at 09:00. The race started at Furey's Pub at Moyvalley (goo.gl/maps/3pqhF) and proceeded westwards to Blackshade bridge (goo.gl/maps/4yVNI) where the race turned around and then the route was direct back to Leixlip. The running route followed the Royal Canal Way from start to finish. There was also the option of a 1/2 marathon (from Cloncurry Bridge near Enfield) and a 10KM distance from The Maws at Kilcock. This event is made possible through the cooperation of East Of Ireland Marathons and Jarlath B. Hynes and Brendan Murphy from Leixlip, Co. Kildare (see a Facebook group page here www.facebook.com/groups/524790427539290/?fref=ts). The key aspect of this run is that they are three races are informal and self supported runs along on the Royal Canal Way trail. There is no chip timing, water stops, marshals, massages, t-shirts or prizes. But it ise an enjoyable run along the Royal Canal and a chance to meet up with fellow runners during the race and then after it at the Le Cheile clubhouse in Leixlip. There are some nice numbers for the race today. 26.2 miles, 2 counties, 5 traversals in and out of Meath and Kildare, crossing 6 roads, and passing under 5 bridges before the finish outside the Leixlip amenities center.

Due to recent heavy rains the canal towpath (particularly between Cloncurry and Kilcock) was very wet and muddy and proved difficult and testing terrain for all of the runners. However despite a strong breeze at a few sections the weather was bright and dry and made for good running conditions.

This photograph is part of a larger set of photographs taken of the event(s) today. They are all available for viewing in this Flickr set. www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157639233559965

The Royal Canal is a very special piece of Irish Heritage. It's waterway channel and it's banks have seen much history with both the rise and subsequent decline in railway and canal travel and transportation. Our run on the Royal Canal is made possible by the incredible hard and dilligent work by the Inland Waterways of Ireland and countless volunteer individuals who turned their vision of a restored Royal Canal into reality.

How can I get a full resolution copy of these photographs?

All of the photographs here on this Flickr set are available for view and download under a Creative Commons License (www.flickr.com/creativecommons/). This means you can view them, post them to other websites, use them, etc provided you provide a link back to the original photograph or photoset here on Flickr. All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available offline, free, at no cost, at full image resolution also. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us. This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember - all we ask is for you to link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. Taking the photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc.

If you would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

I took on a photography request and the person asked for feet. Normally i wouldn't do requests but i've been lacking motivation lately and I thought this would be a good way to get back into the swing of things after a hetic move + lifestyle change. I actually hate moe feet, i wish i had normal f60 feet- sigh. I'm waiting for my camera battery so charge to get ready for a heap of feet. ;)

A few of my contacts requested that I post a vertical orientation of the Golden Gate Bridge if I had taken one... So on that I'm obliged to offer this one. I have more, but those are being saved for a rainy, snowy, cold, dreary day, when I cannot get outside since the weather is now changing and getting shorter in daylight hours, and getting cooler. And I don't want to bore you with my shots of the Golden Gate Bridge in one sitting! So on that, I'll just keep you guessing and waiting for what's to come in the days ahead.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. As part of both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1, it connects the city of San Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County. The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed during the year 1937, and has become an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco and California.
