In this shot, I wanted to replicate another of Hurrell's pictures, a profile portrait he did of Hedy Lamarr. In that picture, he has the light positioned directly Infront and above of her, so this is what I did for this picture. In lesson 59, Duchemin says that we have four voices, one of them is the critic, but that we have no use for the critic. I found this to be true when I would get frustrated because the picture didn't turn out exactly like Hurrell's. But I had to let go of that and try my best and I'm actually pleased with how this image turned out. For editing, I really wanted to get that dream-like and ethereal feel that you get with Hurrell's photography, so I blurred the skin a little more than my other pictures to get soft edges and to make the skin glow. I made it B&W, and made levels adjustments to get the background darker.
If you look through Lonely Planet Japan in the Kyushu/Nagasaki-ken section, you'll find a photo taken from this same spot in there. I stumbled across this spot completely by accident--it's just a little south of the ferry terminal.
