A clearer understanding of the origin recognition complex (ORC) – a protein complex that directs DNA replication – through its crystal structure offers new insight into fundamental mechanisms of DNA replication initiation. This will also provide insight into how ORC may be compromised in a subset of patients with Meier-Gorlin syndrome, a form of dwarfism in humans. Read more »

Clashing Knights. Jousting. Maryland Renaissance Festival. Sep/2016
Jousting is a martial game or hastilude between two horsemen wielding lances with blunted tips, often as part of a tournament. The primary aim was to replicate a clash of heavy cavalry, with each opponent endeavoring to strike the opponent while riding towards him at high speed, if possible breaking the lance on the opponent's shield or jousting armour, or unhorsing him. The joust became an iconic characteristic of the knight in Romantic medievalism.
The term is derived from Old French joster, ultimately from a Late Latin infare "to approach, to meet". The word was loaned into Middle English around 1300, when jousting was a very popular sport among the Anglo-Norman knighthood. The synonym tilt dates ca. 1510.
Jousting is based on the military use of the lance by heavy cavalry. It transformed into a specialised sport during the Late Middle Ages, and remained popular with the nobility in England and Wales and Germany throughout the whole of the 16th century (while in France, it was discontinued after the death of King Henry II in an accident in 1559).[1] In England, jousting was the highlight of the Accession Day tiltsof Elizabeth I and James I, and also was part of the festivities at the marriage of Charles I.[2]
Jousting was discontinued in favour of other equestrian sports in the 17th century, although non-contact forms of "equestrian skill-at-arms" disciplines survived. There has been a limited revival of theatrical jousting re-enactment since the 1970s

Scientists have replicated the natural process of mammalian embryonic development in the laboratory up to the point of development of brain and heart. Using stem cells, researchers created synthetic mouse embryos outside uterus that recapitulated natural process of development in the womb up to the day 8.5. This is a milestone in synthetic biology. In the future, this will guide studies on human synthetic embryos, which in turn could usher in development and production of synthetic organs for patients awaiting transplants.
An embryo is usually understood as an intermediate developmental stage in sequential natural phenomenon of reproduction initiated by sperm meeting an ovum to form a zygote, which divides to become an embryo, followed subsequently by development into a foetus and a new-born upon completion of gestation.
Advancements in embryonic cell nuclear transfer saw the instance of skipping the step of fertilisation of an egg by the sperm. In 1984, an embryo was created from an egg in which its original haploid nucleus was removed and replaced by the nucleus of a donor embryonic cell which successfully underwent development in a surrogate to give birth to the first cloned baby sheep. With the perfection of Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT), Dolly the sheep was created in 1996 from a mature adult cell. This was the first case of cloning of a mammal from an adult cell. Dolly’s case also opened up the possibility of development of personalised stem cells.

Still figuring out my workflow for our 3D printer, but these are the first "real", functional parts I've made. They're for a simple, proof-of-concept prototype I'm working on.

This is my replication of Mastromatleo's work. i think that it is focused on the aspect of senses therefore features such as the mouth and res are emphasised. As I have begun to look at this subject and eyes, I thought that this photographer would be good to research and make connections to. i have discovered new techniques such as photoshopping and managed to teach myself new skills within the software.
I took my photographs using an iPhone camera as I wanted to experiment with my outcomes. Using studio lighting I decided to keep it at an angle rathe than straight on to create shadows to make the photos more atmospheric. I also edited them and reduced the saturation by 100% to create a black and white effect, again to male it more atmospheric and tonal.
In my work you can see that I have used basic elements such as form and tone. I decided to take them in portrait so that more of the subject is shown and in focus. I kept the model positioned in the middle centre of the photographs so that that's what is getting the attention of the viewer. using a blank, simple background also helped to prevent this problem.
