The boat is owned by American Cruise Lines, Guilford, Connecticut, which offers "small ship" cruises on the Mississippi River system, Columbia and Snake Rivers, and the waters of New England, Puget Sound, Alaska and the southeast U.S.
I was told that the boat will be offering cruises on the Ohio River between Louisville and Pittsburgh through early fall, then move to the lower Mississippi River.
The port Z-drive is not functioning correctly so it is being removed from the stern of "American Melody" before being replaced with a new one. It is a Veth Z-drive with counter-rotating (CR) propellers. Z-drives have also been referred to as rudder propellers since the direction of thrust is controlled by slewing the propellers themselves rather than using separate rudder(s) to deflect the thrust of a fixed propeller. Some Z-drives are ducted, with nozzles surrounding the propellers, but this one is open.
Veth Propulsion is a Dutch propulsion manufacturer, now part of Twin Disc, Inc.

"Operation: The CR unit consists of two propellers rotating in opposite directions relative to each other, wherein the second propeller removes the whirling of the water caused by the first propeller. This results in minimal rotational losses with optimal efficiency from the available power and propeller diameters.
Low noise: The counter-rotating propellers give a new dimension to efficient and low-noise propulsion. Because the optimum engine speed is more than 20% lower in contra-rotating propellers than in a single-propeller or in which two propellers rotate in the same direction, there is also an extremely low noise level. Also, the low blade load and the reduced turbulence in the water contribute to lower vibration and noise production.
Benefits: In contrast to other suppliers, Veth Propulsion offers a CR solution in which the propeller is mounted on two sides of the tail unit. This has a number of advantages:
- The peripheral speed of the shaft seals is half that of systems with two propellers on one side, in that a shaft does not rotate inside another shaft.
- Two separate (solid) shafts are each loaded between 45 - 55% of the output power
- A durable bearing and seal are thus created, compared with two propellers on one side
- By making use of a four-blade and a five-blade propeller, the power is distributed over nine blades
- Less time in dock during dismantling. Seals remain in position when the propeller is removed and oil change is not necessary
- At an equal propeller diameter, an efficiency gain of 15 to 20% is achieved compared to a single propeller"

I cannot find engine specs for this boat, but her sister boat "American Song" is propelled by two "ultra-low-sulfur" Caterpillar diesel engines connected to Twin Disc Veth Propulsion Z-drives (Model VZ-1250A-CR) which can be rotated 360 degrees. Power output is 1,350 kilowatts (1810 horsepower) at 1,600 RPM. Extra maneuverability is provided by two Veth Propulsion tunnel thrusters (Model VT-400) producing 400 kilowatts (540 horsepower) at 1,500 RPM.

Taken on an excursion cruise on the paddle steamer Waverley, travelling from Westminster to Gravesend to Southend, into the Medway and back again.
Waverley is named after Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels. She was built to replace the 1899 Waverley which was sunk by enemy action on May 29, 1940 at Dunkirk.
Waverley’s keel was laid on December 27, 1945 but due to material shortages after the war, she was not ready for launch until October 2, 1946. It wasn’t until the following year on January 20, 1947 that she was towed to Greenock for the installation of her boiler and engines. Her maiden voyage was on June 16, 1947.
Waverley was built for the route up Loch Goil and Loch Long from Craigendoran & Arrochar in West Scotland. She now visits several areas of the UK offering regular trips on the Clyde, The Western Isles, the Thames, South Coast of England and the Bristol Channel with calls at Liverpool & Llandudno.
Waverley is the World’s last seagoing paddle steamer. In 1974, at the end of her working life, she was famously gifted for £1 to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society. Waverley Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., a charity registered in Scotland, was set up to own and operate the ship. Waverley then began a second career as one of the country’s best-loved tourist attractions. Since she has been in operational preservation, she has been awarded four stars by Visit Scotland, an engineering heritage award, and has carried over 6 million passengers from over 60 ports around the UK.
2003 saw the completion of a £7m Heritage Rebuild which returned Waverley to the original 1940s style in which she was built. This was made possible with major grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society (PSPS). Contributions also came from Glasgow City Council, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, the European Regional Development Fund and local authorities.
In May 2019 Waverley was withdrawn from service and a capital appeal was launched to raise £2.3 million to allow her boilers to be replaced and re-commission Waverley for further service. In December 2019 it was announced that the appeal target had been reached.
Despite delays to the boiler refit due to the COVID-19 pandemic Waverley returned to service in August 2020 and operated a short season on the Firth of Clyde. After a successful season on the Clyde the following year, Waverley will be returning to other sailing areas in 2022.
2022 marked 75 years since Waverley’s maiden voyage on June 16, 1947.
Paddle steamer history
In 1812, when Henry Bell’s paddle steamer Comet became the world’s first commercial steamship to operate in coastal waters, a tradition was started which remains alive today only in the form of the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, Waverley.
From the 1860’s onward, paddle steamers developed an important niche in the coastal passenger and excursion trade. Large fleets served the cities, towns, villages and resorts of the Firth of Clyde, the Bristol Channel, the South Coast of England, London and the Thames Estuary.
Paddle Steamers also made a significant contribution to the war effort as minesweepers in both World Wars, and indeed Waverley is named after and was built to replace the previous Waverley who performed a heroic role at Dunkirk in May 1940 before being sunk by enemy action.
With a few exceptions, the Clyde steamers were owned and operated by railway companies. These were largely commuter ferries linking all the villages with the nearest railhead for onward travel.

Paddles - 8 Feathering floats. 216″ diameter, 132″ wide. Each paddle float is 36″ deep. There are always two full floats worth in the water at any one time. Each float is 33 square feet in area.

St George's Church is a Church of England church on the Isle of Portland, built between 1754 and 1766 to replace St. Andrew's which had fallen into disuse and was no longer suitable as a place of worship.
During the 1960s a restoration of the church took place under the stewardship of a group formed to protect the church. It then came under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, which continues to the present. No longer retained for regular worship, services are nevertheless held twice annually, on St George's Day and Christmas Day.
The history of St. George's Church began in August 1753. A committee of Portlanders was formed to decide whether to put further finances into the dilapidated St. Andrew's Church or to erect a new church at a more accessible position. St. Andrew's suffered from an unstable site and was prone to landslips (notably those on the east side of Portland in 1665 and 1734). Within two months a decision was made, with a survey of the old church finding that repairs would be at least half the cost of a new building. A year after the completion of the church, a house was built nearby for the parish clerk, and this building would become The George Inn.
The church was closed in 1914 for many reasons, and fell into further disrepair ever since that time. In the 1960s however, the church fell under the protection of a newly formed group, the 'Friends of St George's Church', who were able to restore the church. Now no longer needed for regular worship, the church is now a redundant church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It was declared redundant on 16 April 1970, and was vested in the Trust on 27 October 1971.
Designed by architect and quarry merchant Thomas Gilbert, St George's is regarded as one of the most impressive 18th-century churches in Dorset. It is a large church built of Portland stone and has a tower, a nave, transepts, an apse, and a kind of 'abortive dome' over the crossing. The design is reminiscent of the works of Christopher Wren (particularly the tower, in relation to those of St Paul's Cathedral). The windows are arranged in two tiers, all with simple, broad raised frames that lack moulding. It is designated as a Grade I listed building. Gilbert is also believed to be the architect of a number of houses within the local area, including the Grade II* Listed Queen Anne House, his own residence built in the 18th century.

Tanzania Mainland League reigning Champions, Simba Sports Club, yesterday of Tuesday. 22nd September announced a partnership with Egyptian giants, Al Ahly.
The partnership is expected to benefit both parties as they agreed to work together in areas of business, technical and player development.
The trip to Cairo was led the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer at Simba SC, Miss Barbara Gonzalez who replaced South African, Senzo Mazingiza Mbath who left and joined fierce archi rivals Yanga Africans.
"Visit by chief Executive Officer Barbara Gonzalez accompanied by Board member Mulamu Nghambi at Al Ahly's head quarters in Cairo Egypt," Simba SC tweeted.
"Agreed to work together in the areas of business, technical and player development by building, A talent development center in partnership with Al Ahly team being the first station outside Egypt (in Africa) to be run by Simba and the club."

We had all our house windows replaced in April 2007. Over the 27 years the house existed, the windows started having condensation problems, as seen here.
My dragon is an original piece by Peter Nuttall. I was worried about it fading where it was, but this will do nicely.
Settlers would often fashion their own furniture from wood and as families grew, cabins would be extended or replaced with a bigger structure. Cooking was done outside, as indoor cast-iron stoves were too expensive for most families to afford.
Close to the cabin would be a small enclosure for livestock and a kitchen garden growing crops and vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, corn and pumpkins. Hunting, fishing and foraging were essential for feeding the family.
Most of Ethel's residents acquired land through the Homestead Act. These land deeds for 140 acres, required property owners to build a home and farm the land for five years.
Most homes were one-room cabins built from fallen trees and about 16 feet square - smaller than the average hotel room. Gaps between logs were filled with mud and leaves, and the roof was covered with red cedar tiles laid on cedar trusses. Floors were often bare earth. If there was a window, it would face south for morning warmth and light from the sun and would be covered with paper or hide for weatherproofing.

Built in 1858, this Italianate-style building was built for H. A. Whitney to replace an earlier hotel on the same site, which was built in 1848 and destroyed by a fire in 1857. The building is one of the oldest remaining brick buildings in the city of Columbus, Wisconsin, as well as the oldest hotel, and served as an important social gathering place for over six decades. Originally home to a restaurant on the ground floor with a hotel above and a ballroom on the third floor, the building became increasingly dilapidated and run-down during the 20th Century, eventually becoming home to low-end shops on the ground floor and low-rent apartments above, before becoming completely vacant by the 1990s, by which time it had lost its bracketed cornice. The building features a buff brick exterior, one-over-one windows, a cornice with large paired brackets, decorative window hoods, stone sills, first floor storefronts on Ludington Street that replicate the original first floor facade elements of the building, a corner entrance door, a low-pitch hipped roof, and a partially exposed basement that becomes increasingly prominent along the slope of James Street. The building was almost demolished in 1991 due to deterioration during its period of abandonment, but was saved and rehabilitated to serve as affordable housing on the upper floors, with commercial space on the ground floor. The building is a contributing structure in the Columbus Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

In 2016, Stanton Williams and Asif Khan, working together with conservation architect Julian Harrap and landscape design consultants J&L Gibbons, were the winners of an international competition to find an architect to design the new Museum of London. The team was selected for their “innovative thinking, sensitivity to the heritage of the existing market buildings and understanding of practicalities of creating a great museum experience”.
The vision for the new Museum of London balances a crisp and contemporary design with a strong recognition of the physicality and power of the existing spaces of the West Smithfield site. The early stage concept includes a new lifted landmark dome which would create a beautiful light-filled entrance to the museum; innovative spiral escalators will transport visitors down to the exhibition galleries in a vast excavated underground chamber; flexible spaces are included that can serve as a new meeting place for London; and a centre for events and debate and a new sunken garden and green spaces to provide pockets of tranquillity.
Stanton Williams and Asif Khan are now working closely with the team at the Museum of London and the museum’s stakeholders including the GLA, City of London Corporation and the local Smithfield community to develop their initial concepts into a fully-formed vision for the new museum at West Smithfield.
Paul Williams, Director of Stanton Williams, said: “We are immensely excited about being given the opportunity to work with the Museum of London on this wonderfully challenging project – participating in an endeavour that will transform an area of London that has such a rich history, but sadly has been in decline for many years. Encountering the historic market spaces for the first time ... we were ‘blown away’ by the power and physicality already existing, and knew then, that whatever scheme we developed, this physicality needed to be harnessed, and not lost, and that initial observation has inspired our initial design proposals. This project will engage a broad community well beyond London.”
Asif Khan said: “To have a chance to create a new museum for London, in London, about London, at this moment in time is incredibly exciting for us. We all know the power of public spaces in changing our city and our individual lives, and this is what drives us. We want the Museum of London to be a museum where everyone belongs, and where the future of London is created.”

In 1860 the City of London obtained an Act of Parliament (The Metropolitan Meat and Poultry Market Act of 1860), allowing the construction of new buildings on the Smithfield site. Work began in 1866 on the two main sections of the market, the East and West Buildings. These buildings were built above railway lines which had newly connected London to every other part of the country, enabling meat to be delivered directly to the market.
The buildings, designed by City Architect Sir Horace Jones, were commissioned in 1866 and completed in November 1868 at a cost of £993,816. The Metropolitan Meat and Poultry Act also authorised the development of the Poultry Market which opened in 1875. This building was subsequently destroyed by a major fire in 1958 and was replaced by the current building in 1962. Further buildings were added to the market in later years, the General Market in 1883 and the Annexe Market in 1888.
