In the wake of the Rudd Government’s backflip on climate change and uncertainty about the future of carbon pricing, environment and community groups rallied outside Parliament House to call for the replacement of Australia’s dirtiest power station.
Hundreds of people gathered on the steps of Parliament House to urge Premier Brumby and Ted Baillieu to commit to replacing Hazelwood coal-fired power station with clean energy by 2012 as a key plank of their election platform.

Engine room for oil powered engines providing power for the Fort, built 1942-3 to replace the electric light engine house. A high rectangular structure, measuring 37ft 4in x 22ft 11in, of concrete through out, with a flat roof supported on cross-axial metal girders, it is built into a concrete lined recess in the back of the Twydall Profile. Ventilation is provided by high level rectangular grilles in the walls.
Internally there is a single room accessed by a wide entrance, 6ft 1in x 6ft 11in high, at the southern end of the south-east wall, for double outward-opening metal doors. Decoration consists of camouflage externally, and multiple paint layers internally. Four large windows with four-light metal frames, 3ft 5in wide x 6ft 1in high, are situated in the south-east and north-east walls. Two large extractor vents, 3ft 6in wide x 4ft high, in the north-east wall have the remains of metal hoods surviving on the external wall.
Four iron girders supported on concrete corbels project internally from high up on the south-east and north-east walls. Their ends are square, indicating that they have not merely been broken when the building was decommissioned. Four more girders project from a similar height in the north-east and south-west walls but these may have been broken. It seems likely that they formed a framework for moving heavy machinery. Two more girders issue from a lower level on the south-east and north-west walls, above the floor level engine beds, presumably to support machinery situated there.
The floor contains a series of concrete beds and channels. Two raised beds are located close to the western corner at right-angles to one another. One measures 7ft 6in x2ft 11in x 5.5in high and has six metal securing bolts on its surface, a small extractor, 1ft 8in x 2ft 3in high is situated immediately behind it in the north-west wall. The second bed measures 7ft 6in x 2ft 7in x 1ft 1in high, and has twelve metal securing bolts. Two floor level engine beds are situated parallel to one another in front of the main extractor vents in the south-east wall, each measuring 3ft 6in x 12ft 3in, with twelve metal securing bolts.
Recessed channels of varying dimensions connect the engine beds and presumably held fuel pipes and power cables. Those from the raised beds lead to a large floor recess which may have housed the main power distribution equipment. On the south-west wall there are a series of holes for cabling and brackets, possibly for a site power chart. The channels continue outside the south-west wall, presumably taking power to all locations within the Fort.

We applied for and obtained a Use of Easement so that a side walkway be poured within the easement. We applied for and obtained the PERMIT as required and handled all inspections. We removed the driveway which was damaged by a sinkhole. We poured the driveway with 4000 PSI concrete. All joints were cut accordingly.

The new door Matt and I just installed between the living room and garage. Previously there had been a very flimsy bi-fold door there which had a huge gap under it and kept opening by itself. So we replaced it with a nice solid flat door. Was interesting getting everything level. It has also since been painted brown to match the wall which I think is a huge improvement.

The building is clad in Kasota limestone, and features strong vertical emphasis on the exterior with vertical bays of windows separated by glass spandrel panels, and features multiple setbacks as the building approaches the top of the roof, with a large, cylindrical rotunda on the 6th Street side with a circular glass skylight, and a shopping center in a podium to the west of the tower. The building later became home to offices for Wells Fargo Bank and became known as Wells Fargo Center following the merger of Wells Fargo and Norwest.
