AMFREVILLE, France – Ernie Lamson, a WWII veteran and former Soldier assigned to Alpha Company, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, salutes after laying a wreath at the Timmes Orchard memorial, which is dedicated to Charles J. Timmes, commander of 2nd Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, during the invasion of Normandy who landed in an orchard during the invasion of Normandy and held his position for three days before being able to evade the enemy. The event was one of several commemorations of the 70th Anniversary of D-Day operations conducted by the Allies during WWII, June 6, 1944. Task Force Normandy, led by the 173rd Airborne Brigade out of Vicenza, Italy, has organized 650 personnel from twenty U.S. units and 6 nations, at the invitation of the French government, to participate in the events happening across the region of Normandy. These are costume rendering sketches from my past- most were drawn 20 to 30 years ago for classes or shows.
These sketches are among my favorites, though they were a class exercise and never got made. In the play, the lead character, M. Jourdain, aspires to leave his middle class and become friends with nobility. Cléonte, who is in love with M Jourdain's daughter, with the assistance of his valet Covielle, disguises himself and presents himself to Jourdain as the son of the Sultan of Turkey. Needless to say, M. Jourdain is taken in and consents with delight to have his daughter marry foreign royalty. He is even more delighted when the "Turkish prince" informs him that, as father of the bride, he too will be officially enobled at a special ceremony. The last scene of the play presents this ridiculous ceremony, full of mock-Turkish mumbo-jumbo. Here is the outfit they put on M. Jourdain, which is a "Turkish" version of what King Louis XIV himself would wear in coronation robes.

AMARI AIR FIELD, Estonia - Soldiers assigned to Chosen Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, render honors during a ceremony commemorating new land forces exercises here April 28, 2014. The paratroopers, who are part of a company-sized contingent, arrived here to begin exercises with Estonian troops in a series of expanded U.S. land forces training activities in Poland and the Baltic region scheduled to take place for the next few months and beyond.
