Many Japanese immigrants came from the Hiroshima area. For them, the end of WWII brought mixed feelings. They were liberated from the camps and allowed to return to the West Coast, but many lost family members in Japan to the A-bomb that ended the conflict. The torii gate in the photo collage is part of a powerful pubic art installation designed by Valerie Otani

To me, this photo looks as if the bare tree is looking at its reflection, remembering th day when it was full of leaves.

Remembering Our Fallen is a photographic war memorial that honors our country’s military Fallen from The War on Terror. Because 9/11 was such a defining moment, this memorial includes our country’s Fallen since that tragic day in our nation’s history.
Unlike brick and mortar memorials, Remembering Our Fallen is designed to travel and includes both military and personal photos. Its legacy will be that these men and women will be remembered and their names will be spoken, while helping to lessen the grief of their families.
“At about 6:30 AM on Saturday morning, I pulled up in front of the Pinnacle Arena in Lincoln, NE where Scott and Howie directed a bunch of Marines in the installation of the Remembering Our Fallen exhibit. When it all is set and out in the morning sun, it is really an amazing tribute! The Gold Star Families that were present were very touched and I hope all of you are as proud as I am to have played a role in making this happen.
This exhibit will make its national debut in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC in September. We still have another 15 to 20 towers to go, but I want to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make this first debut a huge success!
www.PatrioticProductions.org had very kind words for the suppliers who were great partners in making this happen… Once again, thanks everyone for such great work. I know this exhibit will help to make sure that those men and women who gave all in our fight against terror since 2001 will not be forgotten.”

The deer are so relaxed in Glen Etive the only challenge is getting a good pose. Though remembering my lesson from last year, tripod has to stay in car - they don't like them, I guess because it looks too much like a rifle to them...

As monument to the seamen who lost their lives in the sinking of the Maine, the main mast of the battleship stands among their graves in Arlington National Cemetery. The Maine sunk by explosion in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898, the cause remains a mystery and subject of debate to this day. 254 seamen lost their lives in the explosion and 59 were wounded, 8 of whom eventually died of their wounds.

Chiefs captain creates scholarship in honour of Grant Sheridan
Myles Mattila is wearing the ‘C’ as the leader of the Kelowna Chiefs this year.
Off the ice, he’s been an exemplary leader in many facets of life for some time and he’s back at it again with a newly-created scholarship.
The Remembering Grant Sheridan Scholarship honours Grant Sheridan, the former owner of the Chiefs who passed away this summer, and it’ll be available to all KIJHL players.

It’s been created through the MindRight for Athletes Society, another creation of Mattila, and will recognize a player for their hockey commitment, community involvement and academic achievement.
The scholarship will be initiated during the Chiefs’ home opener at Rutland Arena on Friday night and more details about it will become available as the season goes on.
“It is with heavy hearts the Kelowna Chiefs will be playing our home opener in memory of Grant. There will not be a dry eye in the house,” says Mattila.
“Grant was a very special person who will be dearly missed by all. Grant and I had very similar fundamental beliefs in the core values of hockey, education, and community involvement, which included mental health.”
Sheridan presented Mattila with the team’s Scholastic Player of the Year award after the 2017-18 season.
