It was at this time last year that I took a photo of Yo (see below). He passed away a few months ago and yesterday I went to meet the family again and give them those photos. They now tell me that it’s the only photo they have of him.
The whole family was there cutting the rice. Seen here is his wife Jawn and youngest daughter Mai. Mai is about to get married and her future husband already living in her village, but they will wait a few more month to get married, since its “too close” to her father passing.
In the Sapa region there are about 35,000 Black Hmong residing in the surrounding 17 villages and they account for about 50% of the area population. Most reside at an altitude of 1,600 – 1,700 meters above sea level in this stunningly beautiful region they call “the city above the clouds”. The Hmong started migrating to Vietnam from China in the last 300 years.
Pls. note: I’m on dialup here and not much on line… will catch up with you when back home, Thanks
The Norfolk Southern executive train F units made an impressive sight no matter where they operated. Shown is an eastbound office car train in Salem, Ohio, on the Fort Wayne Line.
‘Remember’. An elderly war veteran sits at his desk, surrounded by some of the mementos of a life long lived. His remote cottage is cold and lonely, but he is used to hardship and sacrifice. Warmed by a solitary oil lamp and a cup of coffee with a nip of whiskey from his ever-handy hip-flask, he is now alone, but happy... I love to include any oil-lamp or candles in a scene as they add such wonderful golden light, giving a touch of warmth and hope to what could be a rather melancholy scene! Again, the composition is aimed at creating an overall impression or tone, and historic details are almost certainly inconsistent! 1 and 3/10s F7.1 at ISO100 with Canon 50mm F1.8 mkII, (80mm on my crop-frame camera).
This is a photo I had already posted, but in the comment of the first one below. I think it prettier than that one and, because of this, I am posting it here now! ;¬>

NOI SIAMO ANCORA QUI
Siamo ancora qui
non lo dimenticare
E saremo dovunque
Se ci vuoi trovare
Siamo ancora qui
Non lo dimenticare
Passeranno gli anni ma
Di noi non ti scordare.

WE ARE STILL HERE
We are still here
do not forget
And we are everywhere
If we want to find
We are still here
Do not forget
Years passed, but
Do not forget us.
From the SONG OF MARCO Casalese "WE STILL HERE"
August 4th was a sad day for me as one year ago my golden boy Paddy passed away at the age of only 6 years. Paddy's death came suddenly and completely unexpected and left me and his little brother Luan in deep shock. After 12 months I still think of Paddy every day, with love, with sadness and with gratefulness. He was the sweetest character you can imagine, always friendly, affectionate and generous, and I'm grateful for the time I had with him but it also makes me sad that he had to leave so early. On flickr Paddy is still present as my buddy icon. I don't think that I will ever change it as it was in fact Paddy who brought me to flickr because I loved so much taking his pictures and wanted to share them.
I add another picture in the first comment which shows Paddy with his brother Luan.

I seem to remember saying a couple of weeks ago that I needed a break from the Top Hat project and wouldn't be doing any more before Christmas.... errrrm, I've done 4 since then!!
I'd been asking around to find out if anyone had a Victorian roll-top bath for ages as I originally pictured this idea in a luxurious bathroom with an old-style bath filled with red balloons - but I think this works so much better!
This is Carly AKA Alkaline Mouse at an abandoned military base near her hometown of Bristol. I'd been really looking forward to meeting her as we both have a bit of an obsession with derelict locations. She didn't dissappoint and was the perfect model - she can even do fake laughs for the camera which I have to salute because I'm rubbish at it!!
Visit her here....

I took Missy on this shoot and she got freaked out because we were blowing balloons up and then they kept blowing out of the bath and popping on the brambles to the right of the image. By the end of the shoot Missy was sat outside the room shaking and shivering like a leaf :0(. She soon recovered though.

Today I was remembering certain sounds as a child that would scare me. Especially when the house was settling and making cracking sounds. Also the whispering winds in the forest would spook me when I was little. What are some sounds that creeped you out as a child?

Seven years have passed today. Photo of a cemetery on a hill (I think) was taken from a fast moving JR bullet train last year.
The Great East Japan Earthquake of magnitude 9.0 at 2.46 pm on Friday 11 March 2011 did considerable damage in the region, and the large tsunami it created caused very much more. The earthquake was centred 130 km offshore the city of Sendai in Miyagi prefecture on the eastern cost of Honshu Island (the main part of Japan), and was a rare and complex double quake giving a severe duration of about 3 minutes. An area of the seafloor extending 650 km north-south moved typically 10-20 metres horizontally. Japan moved a few metres east and the local coastline subsided half a metre. The tsunami inundated about 560 sq km and resulted in a human death toll of about 19,000 and much damage to coastal ports and towns, with over a million buildings destroyed or partly collapsed.
