Pi: you still have 1000s of photos of ME you've never posted. But ... I suppose, more pictures of the dog will go up instead.

Me: Everybody hates the new Flickr anyway ...

Pi: They'll get used to it.

Me: and THEN we will post more pictures of you.

Pi: or the ... baby ...

Browsing my old photos in search for a wallpaper for my new phone I came across this. It's in lovely Stoupa, a Peloponnese gem which can get rather crowded in the summer. This however is end September and as you can see there's one person swimming... Few minutes later there were three, when my wife and I joined in :-)))

Now that the Provence romane (“Romanesque Provence”) trip photographs have all been uploaded, and before we embark upon the Languedoc roman one with yet more Mediæval wonders to behold, let us take a short break.

In late October 2022, we went to the Paris area to visit family, and over the course of a long weekend, we managed to go into Paris to view an exhibit devoted to The Eighties, visit the château of Fontainebleau, and drive around the lovely river towns of Saint-Mammès and Moret-sur-Loing, at the confluence of the Loing and the Seine rivers. Here are a few photos from that trip which I hope will interest you.

The exhibit about The Eighties that the Musée des Arts Décoratifs put together displayed iconic items from that period of the 20th century during which many of us baby boomers lived their 20s and 30s.

Although I couldn’t honestly say that I “recognized” many of them, it was fun to look at those artefacts, items of clothing or furniture. More than truly familiar friends, they symbolized an age of hope, prosperity, unbridled creativity, without AIDS and COVID, and without such modern-day stupidities such as wokism or political correctness. Those were the days...! :o)

This is a wistful day, a hurt-heart day, a day of "living death," a modern day event created by adult children and imposed upon their parents by denying them access to their grandchildren. It is agonizing.

This was shot at an antique show I attended this weekend. A few young women arrived in full vintage garb.

Happy week to all my friends. Much love and hugs from me to you.

Memorial Day is not about barbeques or the beach.

It is one day, one day out of 365, set aside to remember and honour our dead. All things considered, it's not much we're being asked to do.

Seems like a long time ago,

and a long way to go.

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun

And find your shoulder to light on,

To bring you luck, happiness and riches

Today, tomorrow and beyond.

Thermae, East façade. The photo shows the Thermae building. It was originally provided with two-sloped roof, molded tympanum with four small windows, and two main molded windows. In the front of the facade is easily recognizable the atrium and the access door. The structures of the Frigidarium are visible to the left of the façade.

'The Tower of London Remembers'...Lest we forget...

...888,246 ceramic poppies - one for each British and Commonwealth life given during The Great War so that we can enjoy ours. A stunning thought-provoking installation, photographed in the moonlight of the early hours after the spotlights have long since been turned off.

The magnificent Tower Bridge lit up in the background.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The Virginia Beach Fraternal Order of Police hosts this annual memorial service as a tribute to all local law enforcement officers that have died in the line of duty in service to the City of Virginia Beach.

Reminder: Flags should be flown at half-staff on May 15th

This tribute to American law enforcement officers is part of the historic crime bill that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994. At the request of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Public Law 103-322 designates Peace Officers Memorial Day as one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half-staff.

“Just as we honor those who died in military service each Memorial Day, our nation pauses each May 15th to show its appreciation for the more than 20,000 men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy here at home,” said Craig W. Floyd, Memorial Fund Chairman and CEO. “Lowering flags to half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day is also a way to remember the family members, friends and colleagues these brave American heroes left behind.”

Here's to a legend!

Aberfan was a former coal mining village in the Taff Valley in Wales, United Kingdom, 4 miles (6 km) south of the town of Merthyr Tydfil,

On 21 October 1966, it became known for the Aberfan disaster, when a colliery spoil tip (Slag heap") collapsed into homes and a school, killing 116 children and 28 adults.

"I was never one to patiently pick up broken fragments and glue them together again and tell myself that the mended whole was as good as new. What is broken is broken -- and I'd rather remember it as it was at its best than mend it and see the broken places as long as I lived."

~Margaret Mitchell

Fall Branch

New River Gorge

This uniquely shaped waterfall is the first waterfall seen along Fall Branch. I hiked here last week with my friends Brent, Dana and Rachel. I was not very pleased to see that a tree had been swept downstream and had gotten wedged in tight amid the falls.

Brent and I, but honestly, mostly Brent, fought for several minutes to free the tree from the falls for a more pleasing image. We finally realized that our efforts were futile, and we were left to shoot this waterfall with the tree as a prominant feature. We both decided that the tree gave us a great leading line, and recently, Brent posted a tighter version of this scene, so I decided to post this wider perspective.

In life I've caused a few broken fragments, but with this image, much like with those days of the past, I'm left with remembering the beauty that once was, and also realizing that even with broken fragments, beauty remains.
