The spotless starling dipped his beak into the cool pond water, a mirror for the fading sunset. It had been a long, hot day of foraging. With a sudden, explosive energy, he submerged his chest and began to flail his wings, sending arcs of water silver high into the air.
He ducked, twisted, and soaked every last feather, feeling the dust and heat wash away. For a brief moment, the world was just motion and water, a perfect, invigorating moment of pure joy before shaking himself dry and flying off into the evening twilight.
The slightly outstretched wings of this Purple Gallinule parent creates essential shade for its young chicks as they pause at the water’s edge.

An early morning view of Ramona Falls on a warm June day. The spray and cool air from the Falls was a welcome reprieve after the uphill hike out to the Falls.
Magic outside my front door! A whale forming in the sky ...can you spot it among the clouds?
I love clouds, they always amaze me! (Best on black)
This one stood out. Unlike all the other red ones, this one decided to go yellow; along with a bokeh halo to match.
Song:
Shady lanes, refreshing,
Teach me to be a blessing
To some weary soul each day,
Friends or foes who pass my way.

I like dirt roads. As I pass, I like to see the trace of those who passed before. I like to leave a mark and carry a bit of that road with me as I go.
And there's something about stirring up a cloud of dust behind me that makes me smile.

Austell, GA: While the classic Coca-Cola logo sits in the background, the former Helm Leasing SD40-2 rolls by on the point of light engine move #994.
This was one of my most favorite shoots ever. The photography gods were definitely in a great mood. Shayla and I both have social anxiety issues but we are so comfortable with each other. She is one of the easiest and most gorgeous models I have ever worked with. We finished this shoot on a lovely evening in late September, just as the temperatures started to drop. The water in the Boise River was quite cold but that didn't stop Shayla. She was turning blue by the time we finished. Life is very, very good!
This stone birdbath is not just for the birds. It sits in the shade so the water won't get too hot, and the nearby Holly bush offers plenty of safe hiding places for the birds in case they need it.
But some of our furry visitors also seek a quick sip from time to time, like this squirrel who took a break from hiding peanuts all over the yard.
