I was standing with my tripod at Reflection Lakes in Mount Rainier National Park, not too far from another couple of photographers who apparently were either at this spot or near it. I overheard one say to the other "There's the calendar shot!" After they left, I was picking up to head back to the vehicle when I looked over and saw this view. Yup, a calendar shot if there ever was one.

Couldn't have asked for a better scene of this iconic lake in Mount Rainier National Park. This was taken just before sunset. The colors of the vegetation were vibrant — and those clouds!
A Canada jay ( Perisoreus canadensis) perches on a branch near Reflection Lake in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, USA. These birds are common in the Rocky Mountains, Cascades and other western mountains. They are also known as camp robbers, gray jays and several other names.
Erigeron peregrinus, commonly called a subalpine daisy, blooms near Reflection Lake in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington.
Rosy spirea (Spirea splendens) blooms on the margin of Reflection Lake in Mount Rainier National in Washington.
One of the resolution I wanted to keep during my trip to Mount Rainier is to have minimum intervention from Digital Media that means no texting, no emails and no phone calls.
I was pretty successful in keeping it, I only broke it once I returned to my hotel room.
Part of that credit also goes to no reception at least 7-8 miles radius area within park facility :)
I guess everybody should try this once in a year :)
This pic was taken on my 3rd night of the trip. Yes it was Blue moon night and what a memorable night it was ! You can see how Mt. Rainier is bathing in the moon night.
With very slight to no wind at night reflection was crystal clear in that amazing moon light, a sight be hold. Like everything was going at very slow pace and in silent manner.
I took this photo around 1am in the morning, after spending my earlier part of evening/blue moon night at typsoo lake and driving back from there (1hour drive).
So by the time I reached reflection lake there were only handful of photographer/spectators.Everybody was enjoying serenity of the sight in front of us.You can hear only occasional whispers amongst spectators, everything else was silent and still.
I captured this photograph by only slight light painting close by flowers and those distant trees with my headlamp.
I hope this image gives the idea of the serenity of that blue moon night !
It was truly a night at Paradise !!
Sunrise at Reflection Lakes in Mt. Rainier National Park. One of those rare times that you want clear skies. At least for me, I wanted Rainier to be clear and visible, with a nice clean reflection in the lake surface. It has been a year since I shot this image, and I am just now editing it. But I can still feel that cold air on my face.

This Lesser Yellowlegs was the first bird I found at Reflection Lake in the Mat-Su Valley and so it became my test subject for my new Canon 800mm f/11 lens. I cropped the image slightly and processed it in Lightroom and ran it through Topaz DeNoise. I think this lens needs good light but it's so light to carry it's going to become a nice go to lens for walkabouts in good light.

I had to find a small corner of Reflection Lake this afternoon to get still enough water for the reflection. As always, comments are appreciated. Have a great Wednesday!
Rainier was completely blocked by fog when I first arrived at Reflection Lakes early this morning. As the sunrise progressed though the mists lifted rewarding my patience with a nice moody reflective shot of this massive mountain.
I'm off on another road trip to Mt. Rainier National Park. I'll be away for a few weeks. No cell service there so will be off the grid.
I planned last winter to arrive when the wildflowers are popping as I was later in the season last time. However, major wildfires are all around us. The entire WA state is under an unhealthy smoke level. Worst I've ever seen it. Wouldn't you know it...... a big trip planned and landscapes will be poor and hard breathing isn't recommended so will have to limit some of my planned hikes. Mother Nature is always the Boss though, she controls the conditions. Wildflowers, waterfalls and sunrise/sunsets will still be good enough. Hopefully the fires will be controlled and the air will clear soon. Regardless it will be wonderful to be here and enjoy what we can.
Thanks for taking a look! Always appreciated.

By the time we had walked around the lake and tried various angles, this being one of the "classic views" or put another way "done to death shots" the house and gardens were now open to the general public and there was a constant stream coming through the arches as well as people playing on the lawn in front of the lake. The sky was becoming threatening with fast moving dark grey clouds and the light was changing just as quick. I just wanted one frame of the house illuminated against that greying background and for once luck was on my side. No sooner had I packed everything away, the rain came but job done!
The giant of the Pacific Northwest rises up behind Reflection Lake, which I like as much for the meadows as the water.
Thanks for stopping by. I am on the road and will catch up with everyone once I get back. In the meantime, I wish you all safe travels to you and yours in this holiday season.
I took this hike a month or so ago and was completely in the fog, totally surreal and enjoyable, but I had no idea what I wasn't seeing. You know, stuff like this.... Mount Rainier, Little Tahoma, and Pinnacle Peak.
I wasn't going to post anything until I was caught up, but the building next to ours burned down this morning and we have minor damage and no power so, half day off! I'm five days down after working 50 hours in four days and then had an awesome camp trip Friday through Sunday at Coho. Beautiful place, check it out next year 'cause they locked the gate behind us for the season when we left.
This was taken about a half hour before the skies opened up with hail and pelted me off the mountain. It got passed over for a flip of the coin shot from nearby that I'll put in comments for comparison. Other than added clarity and sharpness to the bottom half, this is sooc. It was just one of those special days. :-)

Finally made it to Friday folks! My husband was up late last night finishing up the sleep platform for Callan and he did such a wonderful job. So many places we can go, it is a little overwhelming. I am thankful that I am so loved. I chuckle everytime he asks if we are going to "Mountain Rainier", "Mountan Saint Helens", or "Mountain Adams".
During the Golden Hour, Penstemon flowers are at home between two rocks whose shape echoes the shape of Mt. Rainier at Reflection Lake.
Deep blue skies on a crystal-clear morning in Mt. Rainier National Park. And we got in early enough that we had this lake entirely to ourselves.
May your Sunday be as peaceful as that mountain morning was for us.
It's great when a plan comes together! Drive up the night before, slept in the truck, got up in the dark and waited for the sunrise.
I almost missed sunrise this morning. Left home without my hiking boots! Although I wouldn't need them for this image, I would over the next couple of days.
It looked like sunrise was going to be a bust, but a lenticular cloud started to form right after the sun rose. So, no dramatic sunrise, but the cloud kept getting bigger and the light stayed soft.

It's National Volcano Week (Feb 5 - 11, 2023), so I thought I'd post an image of a serene Mount Rainier towering over the landscape. Considered "episodically acrive," this volcano is also ranked #2 with a USGS volcanic threat hazard category of Very High, due to it's proximity to communities, people, and property.
On this day, though, everything was sunny and tranquil.

I shot this image a week after my grim visit – see my previous post. Today, I breathed MRNP’s clear air, replenishing my lungs from the relentless wildfire smoke east of the park. Maybe it was because clear air had become so precious that I was super aware of MRNP’s signature scents and fragances -- they’re deliciously sweet and dreamy. As I sat in my car eating my picnic dinner, I gazed out at the scene of Mount Rainier towering above Reflection Lake. Wonderful dappled clouds quilted the sky – their pattern began unraveling about an hour before sunset. I was able to capture this image when the light, color and placement of clouds were still appealing. This part of Reflection Lake has a boggy and fragile shoreline and reflected the clouds nicely – I was set up on the carpark walkway. A family of ducks were enjoying their evening swim, and there was a heron seemed poised for some serious fishing. As you can see in this image, majestic Mount Rainier is alarmingly stark with shrinking glaciers and short-lived critical annual snowpack. Is this the inevitable and undeniable truth of climate change? In his closing remarks in a live interview on Mount Rainier National Park’s Facebook page on September 13th, recently arrived park superintendent Greg Dudgeon said that he can’t imagine any challenge more relevant to our time and our day than climate change, and that he sees a role and a responsibility both as park staff and as stakeholders, to make certain that as people come to enjoy the park, they’re also understanding and appreciating the challenges ahead. Thank you Ranger Greg Dudgeon!

Karen sits at the edge of a rock outcrop overlooking a tarn and below that, Reflection Lakes. On the side of the mountain in the background is Paradise. The Muir snowfield is on the upper right of Mount Rainier.
This view is one of the best in the park i have seen. Actually a pretty easy hike and well worth the effort. One must be comfortable with scrambling over steep rocky faces, loose scree, and some exposure as it gets a bit airy at times.
The following image shows a different perspective of Karen as she sits on this ledge. She is truly fearless, or at least appears to be. She never has chickened out on some of our expeditions!
Reflection Lake ~ Mount Rainier Washington state, early morning sunrise. This is another of my recent reworked older photos from 2006. This is just before sunrise, looking down the shoreline. As soon as the sun appeared the mist/fog dissipated almost immediately. This is one of my favorites of the batch. Occasionally it's worth getting up early!

Reflection Lake, Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park. Hope everyone has a great weekend and thanks for your views and comments!
Two year ago, I did my first attempt to capture the famous Perseid Meteor Shower events during August. Unfortunately, at that time the entire Washington State was covered with smoke from wild fires and the viewing conditions for meteor shower wasn't great. Last year the Perseid Meteor shower happened to be in the same time as full moon, which wasn't ideal either. This year, chances finally come for me to try again.
The meteor shower peaked on last Tuesday night, but cloud coverage was too high so I had to wait until Wednesday night which had very clear sky. I went to Mt.Rainer National Park after work and came to this famous Reflection Lake. As night fell, I could start to see meteors every now and then, and several of them were really bright and lasted almost an entire second. WOW, what an amazing night to see Mt.Rainier with perseid meteors on the sky!
