When I arrived at Rainier's Reflection Lakes I couldn't see anything with all the mists. Just as dawn arrived it fortunately started to clear out well enough for some shots.

A couple more shots taken after more mists had cleared out in comments.

Thanks for taking a look!

The Winter Solstice is here, which is always welcome, as the days begin getting longer and Spring is getting closer. Nice!

May your day be bright and Merry!

The Mtn was totally fogged in when I arrived at

Reflection Lake this morning. Thought it was going to be a bust. Several other photogs took off for Paradise. And then the sun's warm rays rather slowly chased the fog away...wanted some fog tho...

"During an eruption 5,600 years ago the once-higher edifice of Mount Rainier collapsed to form a large crater open to the northeast much like that at Mount St. Helens after 1980. Ensuing eruptions rebuilt the summit, filling the large collapsed crater. Large lahars (volcanic mudflows) from eruptions and from collapses of this massive, heavily glaciated andesitic volcano have reached as far as the Puget Sound lowlands. Since the last ice age, several dozen explosive eruptions spread tephra (ash, pumice) across parts of Washington. The last magmatic eruption was about 1,000 years ago. An active thermal system driven by magma deep under the volcano has melted out a labyrinth of steam caves beneath the summit icecap." usgs.gov

Enjoy a safe, wonderful Sunday and week ahead!

Reflection of the peak "Matterhorn" in the lake "Stellisee"

This day began with heavy fog and little promise of a bright new day. Patience was rewarded with a nice replication of Mt. Rainier in Reflection Lake as the fog lifted and a beautiful new day arrived. This is why photography can be addictive for so many of us.

Enjoy a wonderful Easter!

First light on Mt. Rainier thru the morning mists.

A few more shots from this memorable morning in comments.

Thanks for taking a look.

Happy Friday!

Mt. Rainier National Park, WA.

My Autumn hunting season has begun, but with digital bullets. I'll be away visiting family and then out image hunting for the next month or so. Much of the time I'll be off the grid. I generally take this time to take a necessary break from the internet, getting more in tune with nature. Been waiting all year for this. Fun ahead.

Have a wonderful month!

Should have some nice pics when I return.

Morning mists rise above Reflection Lake as the sun caresses Mt. Rainier.

"Mount Rainier is ranked third of the 128 ultra-prominent mountain peaks of the United States (Denali and Mauna Kea top it). In topography, prominence measures the height of a mountain's summit relative to the lowest contour line encircling it. Mount Rainier has a topographic prominence of 13,210 ft (4,026 m), which is greater than that of K2, the world's second-tallest mountain, at 13,189 ft (4,020 m)." Wiki

Rainier's contour line (base) is therefore at 1210 feet above sea level. The Mountain rises an impressive 13200 feet from it's base.

Enjoy a wonderful Sunday and week ahead!

A quote that describes my obsession with mountains well.

Smiles this morning watching the sun highlight the beauty of Mt. Rainier. One of the smaller Reflection Lakes nicely mirrors the beauty rising above.

Enjoy a wonderful Sunday and week ahead!

Happy Winter Solstice Day, the shortest day of the year. With each following day the sun will stay up a bit longer. Enough with this getting dark at 4:45. Bring on the Light!

Enjoy a wonderful weekend. Safe travels for those traveling for the Christmas holiday.

The sun had broken the horizon sharing it's radiant light on Mt. Rainier rising above a section of Reflection Lake.

Mt. Rainier National Park features a variety of beautiful mountain lakes scattered throughout the park. There are 292 permanent and 84 seasonal lakes which can be found within the borders of the park. These include tarns, which are small, shallow lakes which form in the basins carved by glaciers.

The lakes are currently maintained in their natural state. However, at one time there was a boat house and boat rentals were available on the lakes, as well as skiing in the area, but these have long since been abandoned. Fishing also occurred here, but it is not currently permitted any longer on any of the lakes.

Pristine and natural is best.

Enjoy a relaxing Sunday and wonderful week!

What a morning it was. A half hour before the fog covered everything. My patience was blessed with a remarkable morning.

May your paths today lead to beauty and happiness.

A wonderful morning watching day break on Mt. Rainier mirrored in one of the Reflection lakes.

Always brings me pleasure to step right back in to the frame remembering the joy I was feeling watching this grand show on this fine morning. Particularly during these long winter months.

Enjoy a Super Sunday and wonderful week ahead!

Happy Earth Day!

"Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul."

John Muir

"Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money."

-- Cree Indian Proverb

I remember the first one well in 1970, my senior year. They let us out of school that afternoon and we picked up litter around town. Then we had a celebration for old Gaia. Great fun.

Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.

I admire, support and greatly appreciate the portions of our precious planet that we have protected for future generations to enjoy, like this view of Mt. Rainier capturing the first light on another glorious day.

Thanks for the taking a look, and protecting and celebrating our home.

Wishing our dear Mothers, whether near or far, here or gone a very Happy Mother's Day! May their Day be filled with Laughter, Joy, Hugs and Love!

A new day begins with Mt. Rainier mirrored in Reflection Lake.

Thanks for your friendship and support!

Having already taken the reflection shots, what drew my eye to this scene is all the reddish color and texture of the sediment in the foreground underneath the shallow water along the shoreline.

One of the most iconic views of Mt. Rainier in the park can be found at Reflection Lakes. Summer and fall, sunrise and sunset, it is perhaps the single-most photographed view for both budding and experienced photographers. A great place to run into friends and meet new ones as well.

It's Labor Day holiday weekend in America. Regardless where you are may your Monday and week ahead be wonderful.

A crisp, refreshing morning with a copy of Mt. Rainier in Reflection Lake.

Back from camping and exploring around the Hell's Canyon, the deepest gorge in North America. The canyon forms part of the border between Idaho and Oregon.

I grew up nearby, my old stomping grounds. Seems mountains and canyons are steeper than I remember when I ran up and down them back in the day.

Enjoy a wonderful Sunday and Memorial Day Holiday!

Reflection Lakes, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Reflection Lakes is probably one of the most photographed views in Mount Rainier National Park. The iconic view of Mount Rainier reflected in the glassy surface of the lake is the quintessential park photo.

This however, is not that photo. Lol

I hiked to Reflection Lakes on somewhat of a whim, as part of a meandering loop starting and ending at Narada Falls and playing “choose your own adventure” at each trail junction along the way. So my arrival at a few minutes before noon meant that the midday sun directly over the mountain and the gentle breeze rippling the lake made for a highly suboptimal opportunity to take “that” photo.

But the lake is beautiful in its own right, not merely as a reflective surface for Tahoma’s majestic countenance. Ringed by evergreen trees it has a lovely blue-green color and the striking clarity typical of the alpine lakes in this area. I took this photo from the west side of the lake as I came down the Lakes trail (with Rainier to my left and off camera). It was a wonderful spot to sit and enjoy the lake away from the crowds in the main viewing area, with only dragonflies and jumping fish for company.

*Note: Reflection Lakes can be accessed by car via the Stevens Canyon Road in the summer only, or by hiking on either the Wonderland Trail or the Lakes Trail. It can also be done as a snowshoe trip in the winter when the lakes are frozen over (which I have also done) from either Paradise or the Narada Falls parking area.

A dandy dawn with radiant Mt. Rainier mirrored in Reflection Lake.

Thanks for any comments, faves and suggestions.

Have a wonderful Sunday and week ahead!

Mt. Rainier on a quiet early morning.

The smoke was bad here much of the summer from nearby wildfires. Our summers in the PNW have been much hotter than in years past. Sad to see hundreds of miles of beautiful woodlands lost to the fires. Heavy smoke is becoming a common hazard and challenge for photographers during our summers now. :-((

Enjoy a wonderful week ahead!

Mt Rainier National Park, Washington. HSoS!

(Smile on Saturday Theme: Tree Silhouettes.)

I needed something to bury the previous post and stumbled on this. I have so many shots from here that I could probably make a Reflection Lakes album, but it's this or more shots of rocky beaches so...... :)

If you look closely you'll see that ice is beginning to form on the surface, right now the lake is frozen and beneath thirty feet of snow. (that's a lot for you metric Canadians out there) :)

Some moments tell their own stories...

Enjoy your Sunday and week ahead.

Mt Rainier National Park, Washington. It is always a gamble what kind of weather you'll find on Mt Rainier. We hit the jackpot. It was a full moon so no Milky Way shots but what a night. Clouds were scarce, the moon was spectacular and there was no wind which made for a wonderful reflection shot on Reflection Lakes. This vantage point of Mt Rainier is one of the parks most iconic and perhaps most photographed view. This was my first night shot from here and was taken just before 11pm.

but not much room for a reflection... : )

even with the snow & ice, it was a beautiful day

This isn't fifteen feet different and might even be shot in the same tripod footprint as 'the pointing tree', but what a difference between the shots. A really nice bit of schooling/learning on composition between these two photo's so I'll include the almost exact but completely different shot in comments. What do you think?

My pc is back, but they tell me the hard drive is dying (again) gonna try and post this before it crashes. :-) long story short I was up there at 2:00 on Skyline and there was no mountain, I waited and watched from Reflection Lakes as it slowly revealed itself just as the sun set. It was an amazing show. I think I'll eventually post one of the cloud enshrouded shots, but for now, good night. :-)

Summer wildflowers at Reflection Lake on Stevens Canyon Road , Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington State

This was my second attempt this year to get a dawn shot at Reflection Lakes with the hope of getting it thawed but with snow below the mountain. Well, it was dawn and there was snow, the rest, not so much. :)

After the severe beat down I got on my last foray here I was pleasantly pleased to find that the mountain would deign show himself for me. This is what hail free Reflection Lake looks like. :-) Mount Rainier National Park. Washington State. USA

ps 11/16/14 this became my first 99fav pic! Pretty darn exciting moment for me. :-)

It's hard for me to pull my eyes off of the mountain on clear days, but the morning glory going on in the East was wonderful to behold and very short lived. Taken from the largest of the Reflection Lakes.

Blow it up, this really needs to be full screen to be enjoyed.

Mount Rainier as seen from Reflection Lake. This must be why it's called Reflection Lake.

Stevens Canyon Road, Mount Rainier National Park.

I had spent dawn shooting from Stevens Pass and got the shot that I wanted but on the way out my my muse sang to me and I could not pass her by.

Frantically "working", trying to beat the light I took about twenty shots, all of them nice imho and then I took this one and I stopped. It's a half hour past dawn, 35F, the ground is crunching beneath my feet, ice is forming around the edges of the leaves and the lake is beginning to draw its frozen blanket over it in preparation for its Winter hibernation. I've been here many times and God willing I'll return many more, but the realization that this would be the final visit of the year caused me to just stand here and breath for a while.
