Another shot of the Balmoral - I was hoping for a reflection shot here!! You can see Tim having a close look and also the Fairbairn steam crane.

A Fairbairn crane is a type of crane of an 'improved design', patented in 1850 by Sir William Fairbairn. There are numerous hand-powered versions around the world and one surviving steam-powered example in Bristol Docks, England. (From Wikipedia)

Thanks for all your comments!!!!!

daruma* and I went to Earlswood Lake to take some snaps. He showed me several spots where I took reflection shots like this.

The last time I photographed one of these beautiful Mandarin Ducks (also at Tehidy), it flew away pretty quickly.

This time though, it was in no hurry to get away which allowed me to capture some photos of it preening and reflection shot.

Like last time, it was a little gloomy. So, the ISO was dialled up (to 12800) - much different to my landscapes which rarely exceed ISO 400!)

Temps have been getting a little above freezing the last couple of days and we are melting a good bit of snow. Pictures all need to be in black and white for a while because the snow we have is looking less than fresh. Lots of puddles around to try and catch reflection shots.

Since the day I first saw it, the massive volcanic plug on the beach, Morro Rock has had a special place in my heart. Something about it always attracts me and I have dragged my wife and various members of my family enough times to see this amazing geological formation. But spring is here and when we had beautiful weather in SoCal we decided to head out to Montana de Oro State park and see if we could get a nice sunset shot of Morro Bay. Last time we went there, we took the southern vistas of the rock and this time decided to head north of the Rock to get the classic reflection shot.

My plan was to get a shot of Morro Rock with beach dunes as foreground interest but when we reached about an hour before sunset, we learned that the dunes were closed because of nesting season. So I decided to stick with the classic view of Morro Rock from the beach with the reflection of the sunset sky in the beach.

Sunset was pretty muted due to the thin veil of fog that was present that day and colors only turned vivid once the sun actually went down the horizon. This shot was made with the Nikon’s new D850 and my trusty 24-70, with a 2 stop ND grad used to balance the foreground and the sky.

Underneath the M3 motorway near Byfleet, there runs a canal. The legs of the motorway were covered in graffiti.

I had seen the location whilst travelling on the train from Winchester to London. A trip I used to make on common occasion.

I went up with a friend. We drove to the nearest trainstation and proceded to scout the place by foot. This took effort. We had to scale 3 barbed wire fences twice our height, clear 2 large bramble bushes and clear the canal on a rope swing. The worst part of the journey was crossing 8 sets of live rails with a train hurtling passed at 80m.p.h.

I broke my tripod and ruined a T shirt but got the reflection shot I needed.

This was entered into my successful ARPS panel.

A parting shot after shooting a Wembley bound engineers train at Canley.

I've been fascinated by reflection shots for a long time, but have only just started trying them. It's blue hour on a very showery April night and this reflection is taken on the footbridge that takes commuters over the running lines at the station. The bridge is still as unsightly as it ever was but that said, it has helped and featured recently in my work.

While I wasn't able to get a glassy reflection shot of Mirror Lake, I was really happy with how this one turned out!

Always on the alert for a good reflection shot, this Great Egret was kind enough to make a long slow pass just above the water. I managed to get a couple dozen decent frames in various wing positions during that pass. At ten frames a second that was not a difficult task.

Yet more from my canal walk. Some reflection shots that I took. It was one of those days where almost every shot was a good one, and I probably overdid it, but I was enjoying myself, which is why we do this isn't it?

I don't get out much for photography at the moment, or out for anything for that matter but last night the aurora alerts started kicking off and the clouds were actually clearing so I took the chance and headed out... However once on location and having not done much photography for some time I forgot about the golden rule of coastal photography.... always keep looking behind you.

In the middle of this shot is the sand bar (the dark band across the middle) where I was taking shots of the wreck that you can just see in the shot. I had actually walked through the few inches deep water to get to the sand bar in the first place but when I finally did look back I discovered a small lagoon had formed. Luckily there was still an escape route open at the far end and I made it across without getting too wet.

On the plus side the lagoon made a nice mirror surface tor a reflection shot :o)

btw, did I say.... please no graphics in your comments, unless it's from a group I've posted in - I'm sorry but they will be deleted, so there is no point

Very still morning on the harbour gave a great opportunity for reflections shots around Queens Wharf.

I thought I would end this week with one my own personal favourite from the series of reflection shot!

The top half is the original and the rest is obviously photoshopped but I feel that this is more the direction that I am heading for, making my photography more of an art form than just a straightforward image, some of you may not care for this type of vision but please let me know what you think?

Here is everthing needed to do the reflection shots. I also used a soft, dry cloth to wipe of fingerprints (wet cloth smears), window light behind me, and 1 flash bounced off of ceiling.

I posted more specific directions (and a link to the mirror) on my blog:

i persuaded Izzy to come on a walk with me to Newport Sands - great for moody reflection shots,

one of my favorite spots around the South Loop is Burnham Harbor...one can get amazing sunset shots from this marina and some great reflection shots as the enclosed harbor makes the water quite still especially with zero winds...you can also get a teriffic view of the skyline from around here...have a good one guys...pls. I ran across this young Yellow-crowned Night-Heron this morning while birding in Brazoria County. I thought is made a pretty scene in the calm water as it stood perfectly still for several minutes at a time. Eventually it caught and ate a crab which was interesting to watch but I thought the reflection shot here was my favorite.

Okay okay, I know I've done reflection shots before - and even in the same pond. But today, with the sky so incredibly blue, it took on a whole new (blue!) dimension. (There's an apartment building right next door. I took a shot of its reflection, too. But it's so sharp and clear that you absolutely cannot tell it's a reflection. Funny how that works sometimes.)

A real shame the tide was out on the day - the sky was fantastic, and I think had the tide been in I could have gotten some epic sky/reflection shots. Maybe even a long exposure or two.

As it was I had to settle on second best - but definitely going to return, its a lovely place (if you don't fall in the mud like I did).

With no filter options, I've noticed that water has a polarizing effect. So, yeah, I blew it on the f-stop, but have noticed that reflections framed in 12mm portrait can provide 2 photos when cropped with near or far focus. In this case f-stop selected provided a soft focus on the background. It seems possible to recover some of the effort. Upper half of this photo would, in itself, be to my liking as a reflection shot. Maybe not upside down.

Tripod, crop.

A boxing day stroll around The Helix and Kelpies resulted in this reflection shot using the iced over puddle in the centre of the grass.

I wanted to try and get a reflection shot that had the Opera House in the reflection. That didn't work - but I liked this.

this is also in Morton Arboretum from this morning's shoot...this is Crabapple Lake on the east side of the arboretum....quite a difficult shot to make as i had to go across waist high reeds to get to this side of the lake as there was no access path and had to crouch under one of the crabapple trees which was really close to the edge of the lake so there's no obstructions for the reflection...plus, i had to wait a little bit for the winds to die down and get a decent calm surface to get the best reflection shot...pls. A reflection shot from my Sep. 7, 2010 shoot at the Ridgefield NWR. This bird was a superb photo subject!

A reflection shot of the Milkyway taken near Grimsel mountain pass in the Swiss Alps. .

This is by far the most time-consuming shot I have created to this day (taking the shots and post-editing). I did already spend quite a long time under the stars taking the different photo layers (tracked, untracked, focus stacking & separate reflection exposures) which was then followed by a marathon post-processing session...well, I guess I should try this more often and with more practice perhaps be able to optimize the whole process a little bit. .

During those shots my wife was sleeping alongside in the alpine meadow. I do very much appreciate her patience and sympathy for my out of the ordinary hobby and her company out there in the dark! She usually tries to stay awake and watch some shooting stars but eventually falls asleep anyway. During these nights I am always absolutely fascinated and somehow spiritually touched. I consider it to be a great privilege to have the opportunity to spend such a wonderful time under the night sky. In terms of Alan Watts' analogy to the universe/life, to me this is "dancing" and "singing" to the cosmic music playing around us. So don't forget to dance and sing while the music is playing and make the most out of the brief period of time we have as stardust-composed human beings in this amazingly complex cosmos! .
