During the weekend of June 22 & 23, the member units of the newly reformed Independent Volunteer Rifles descended upon the Spangler’s Spring and Culp’s Hill portions of the Gettysburg National Military Park to recreate the actions of Brigadier General George “Maryland” Steuart’s brigade on July 2 & 3, 1863.

Steuart’s Brigade was part of Major General Edward “Allegheny” Johnson’s Division of Lieutenant General Richard “Baldy” Ewell’s 2d Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia. The brigade consisted of the 1st Maryland Battalion, 1st and 3rd North Carolina, and the 10th, 23rd and 37th Virginia regiments.

Drill and firing demonstrations were given by the IVR for the public on Saturday and Sunday. Talks were given about the brigade and the life of the Confederate soldier during that period. Additionally the unit placed flags at the marker denoting where Steuart’s Bridage was placed in the line of battle near Rock Creek. The unit also performed a recreated skirmish charge through the woods, and up Lower Culp’s Hill recreating the actions of the original brigade.
