At the recent Grace Care Center of Katy Networking Breakfast, participants generously donated items for the Wells Fargo Advisors care package drive for the Marines Momâs project. These donation packages are a welcome sight to the soldiers and are considered a vital source of support to our troops. Beyond basic gear provided by the military, soldiers depend on their families and the community for other needed items.

53 readers took part in the News of the World Read-Aloud on Thursday, Feb. 1 in the MST Atrium. All in all, 24 students and 29 faculty and staff brought the book to life for the nearly 120 people who dropped during the day to listen the readers.
Taft McWhorter wanted to be a rock star when he grew up. Instead, he became a businessman and an artist. Last year, he opened McWhorter Gallery, an art space and consulting service featuring several of Houstonâs âfinest contemporary artists.â Starting April 24, the gallery will feature McWhorterâs own works in his first solo art exhibition in Houston.
Entitled âRock and Roll,â the solo exhibition will open with a public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 at the galleryâs 2119 Canal Street location. The exhibit will remain on view through May 29.
According to gallery director Lindsay Peyton, the thought of showcasing the gallery owner may seem self-serving to some, but it was a deliberate decision. âSome might consider it a faux pas to feature the founderâs own work, but this show is about being young and rebellious and challenging tradition. Itâs what rock and roll is all about.â
âBesides, McWhorter has become an important artist in his own right and it makes sense to display his paintings in Houston before he packs them up for his solo show in New Orleans,â she added.
Over two years ago, McWhorter left a position as manager of Houston artist John Palmer to concentrate on his own art career. At the time, he imagined himself devoting his newly acquired leisure entirely to his own painting. It soon became clear, however, that he wanted to do more.
âIâve heard that gallery owners are artists who could never sell their own work,â McWhorter laughs. âI thought I wanted to focus on my own art, but I honestly get as much pleasure working with other artists and helping them with their careers.â
McWhorter opened the gallery to provide a venue for some of Houstonâs most talented contemporary artists to showcase their work. In addition to exhibition space, the gallery also offers a consulting service for artists and an art rental program for local businesses.
âFor me, itâs about combining my passions â art and leadership,â McWhorter explains.
âI want to take an active role in building this cityâs arts community. I believe communities must do what they can to develop and support their creative talent.â
In the meantime, McWhorter is putting the finishing touches on his new series of work for the solo exhibit. âIâm looking forward to the show,â he said. âItâs my chance to be a rock star. Wait until you see the boots Iâm going to wear to the exhibit.â
