Racing was on again at Beaumont Road again this morning, and an old cycling friend, who I hadn't seen for quite some time (before he had his accident) was there watching his young son Michael race in C grade ... and for the record, Michael finished 3rd, as he's captured above, and given his size and age compared to the other competitors, that's a fine achievement !
Ray and I cycled, and raced together, for about 5 years and he was one of those guys that was always there ... he just never gave up, and on those (frequent) 4 hour training rides he was always great company ... he'd developed that fine skill (that most of us did sooner or later) of being able to grunt intelligently whilst riding flat out, and still make sense ... I guess you have to be a cyclist to appreciate that ;-)
The year 2007 was not a kind year ... in March of that year, my cycling coach had a high speed accident and hit a steel barrier - 5 months later he was released from hospital minus his right leg (above the knee). In June, I also had a high speed (~70 kph) racing accident and broke my back and spent 4 weeks in hospital and a further 8 weeks in a brace ... another surgery in September last year seems to have (finally) set things back to normal
In November of that fateful year, Ray was training at Homebush (the site of the Sydney Olympics) and was hit by a car where the driver simply wasn't looking ... and you can see the results above - Ray is completely paralysed from the neck down
Fast forward to this morning ... we chatted, but in that semi embarrassed manner where neither of us was really quite sure what to say to the other - I'd been unlucky, Ray hadn't been so lucky and paid the ultimate price
Ray wasn't all that keen to have his photo taken, but the look of sheer joy, and pride, on his face when Michael rode past us on each lap just needed to be captured :-)
I'm going back to Beaumont Road next time they race up there 'cos I've printed out the shot, and it looks pretty good ... and I'm sure Ray and Michael will like it ;-)
The sky opens in an improbably perfect location for me to catch this "ray of light" directly over the resting snowmobilers.

Templo de Jesús María
Este templo corresponde al convento de monjas dominicas fundado en 1722 y por ello su fachada lateral; toda en cantera amarilla y gris claro, ostenta doble portada. Es uno de los pocos templos que aún conserva su atrio, de forma alargada, cercado por pilastras de cantera rosa que sostienen verja de herrería colonial. En el interior es digno de admirarse: sus bóvedas de arista nervadas, las pilastras estriadas de doble capitel (semejantes a las de Catedral), que sostienen los arcos fajones, los retablos neoclásicos, pinturas coloniales al óleo, la imagen de la Virgen del Rayo - llamada así porque según la tradición, el 13 de agosto de 1807 recibió una descarga eléctrica protegiendo a las monjas de ser alcanzadas por dicho rayo -, las rejas originales de los coros alto y bajo que comunican al convento.
Fotógrafo británico nacido en 1941. Estudió diseño comercial y fotografía en la London Collage of Printing de 1957 a 1961, donde descubre el trabajo de Bill Brandt. De 1961 a 1964 estudia diseño en la Universidad de Yale. En ese año comienza a trabajar como director de arte asociado con Alexey Brodovitch en la revista Sky de Nueva York y colabora en varias publicaciones como Álbum, Saturday Evening Post, Sunday Times Magazine y Horizon.
En 1964 realiza varios reportajes acerca de la criminalidad y la delincuencia juvenil de New Haven. Un año después documenta el mundo del jazz. De 1966 a 1971, viajó a lo largo de Inglaterra fotografiando festivales, trajes y costumbres típicas, así como sitios de descanso, imágenes que remiten al trabajo de los fotógrafos del Picture Post en la década de los años cuarenta.
En 1969 realiza su primera exposición denominada The English Seen en Londres, la cual viaja a Francia y a Estados Unidos. Otras exposiciones se cuentan: Personal Views: 1850-1970 y British Council e ICA Photographic Workshop, ambas realizadas en Londres en 1972.
Ray-Jones se enfatiza en reflejar la sociedad inglesa, acontecían en una expresión personal y no comercial, definiendo así su fotografía dentro del rango sociológico.
I was so mad last night.. I never get to see Ray and I miss him sooo much! :( He drove 3 hours to see me and I was tired from working all the time.. I fell asleep :( This morning I woke up late for work... damn work... errr and all I had time for was a sneaky photo of him snoring... He's so cute and peaceful though... I'm sure I'm boring everyone with my pictures of cats, dogs and sleepy Ray.. last one I promise :)

How often do you have a true living rock legend standing only a few feet in front of you? Ray Davies (of The Kinks, of course) stopped into Toronto today to make a rare in-store appearance.

Ray isn't married or has any kids. He is the closest friend that Guy and I have. Ray and I have the same job at the library. I have known him for as long as I've known Guy. He has curley hair and is very tall. He loves basketball and comic books.
Probably the last time future Hall of Famer Ray Lewis visits Nashville. One of my worst memories in Titan football history is him stripping Eddie George of the ball in a playoff game. Nice to send him out of here with a loss.

Chorizo and Hominy Soup
from Rachael Ray Magazine November 2008
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
6 ounces chorizo sausage, finely chopped
2 carrots, coarsely chopped
2 ribs celery, coarsely chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 32-ounce container chicken broth
1 29-ounce can white hominy, rinsed
1/2 cup finely chopped cilantro
4 corn tortillas, warmed
In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chorizo, carrots, celery and garlic and cook until the vegetables are slightly softened, about 5 minutes. Add the cumin and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes. Stir in the chicken broth and hominy and simmer for 20 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Top with the cilantro and serve with the tortillas.
My variations: I used breakfast sausage instead of chorizo and skipped the cilantro and tortillas.
