This is a picture of some rapids on the Patapsco River upstream from the site of the former Bloede Dam at Patapsco Valley State Park in Maryland.
On July 1, 2017, MRL SD40s 263 and 252 pull a westbound coke train at Rapids, Montana. MRL uses older units to haul trains awaiting road power or crews to sidings west of Laurel. These moves free up yard space on days that Laurel Yard is busy. 17/07/06. Photo by James E. Lewnard
Playing with the new Canon 100mm F2.8 macro in non macro mode. Rested the camera against the rail of a footbridge over the stream. Best bit of available light in the whole of the 4 or 5 days I was down in Cornwall leading up to new year.

Did something a little different on Friday night went into Grand Rapids with Art Prize and shot some city night shots. This turned out to be quite fun with the town abuzz with Art Prize, tons of people wondering around the city.

The Hillsborough River State Park in Tampa, Florida, has a section along the river called "the rapids". I love the way the blue sky and clouds reflect in the pools of swirling water as it passes over the golden rock bed creating a beautiful natural abstract from nature.

Festa Italia hamlet, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Williamsburg, VA
Roman Rapids is a river rafting ride at the end of Festa Italia, where up to six people sit in a raft and are carried and spun around the fast flowing track, getting completely soaked in the process. This attraction opened on May 28th, 1988.

Air temperature -20*C, water temperature "ice cold".

The demanding Bonnet Plume River has numerous sets of Class III rapids. Peter Sandiford and Jane Isakson run a rocky narrow stretch in the upper river. Video by Juri Peepre.

I'm not used to rivers, especially not energetic ones in deep valleys, so I found the Almond fascinating but forbidding - power and beauty in equal measure.
Here, a short exposure freezes the water, which looks to me like resin. I tried some longer exposures - 1/15th is as fast as I dare go with this lens handheld - but I should go back and do some longer work with the tripod/ND filter.

Scanned from a post card sent to my mother by my father and is postmarked July 20,1937, about four years before they were married.
"There were three ships that handled the passenger trade between Prescott and Montreal back then. These were the Rapids King, the Rapids Queen and the Rapids Prince. The Rapids King was the first ship designed for the thrilling run through the rapids section of the St. Lawrence River. Built in 1907 by the Canadian Shipbuilding Company at Toronto, she carried passengers for the Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company which later became the Canada Steamship Lines. The SS Rapids King, 245 feet long had a triple expansion engine and had two coal-fired scotch boilers. Drawing six feet and five inches of water, she was really too large for the dangerous rapids run and frequently ran aground. As a result, she was placed on a regular run at the western end of Lake Ontario and eventually between Chatham Ontario and Detroit Michigan. Following the Great Depression the Rapids King was laid up in Sorel, Quebec until 1949, when she was towed to Kingston and broken up for scrap."

The merced river in the Yosemite National Park. Pure nature with massive rocks, beautiful flowers and a wild and loud river. This was one of the first spots I stopped on the way deeper in the park.

BNSF Rapids Turn from Superior is just out of Boylston, WI and approaching the end of two mains at MP 15.9 on June 26, 2013. Power for this evenings turn is a pair of SD40-2s, BNSF 1619 and BNSF 1918.
This edition of the Rapids didn't make the regular stop at Cloquet to interchange with the CTRR and ran straight to Rapids. The Brainerd Local handled Cloquet on this particular day.
