Took a little time one evening on a business trip to snap a couple of photos. Little colder here than in GA at this time. Nice town, very nice people and very clean city. I wish I could have captured the peace sign in the water but I needed a tripod or a wider angle. Unfortunately since this was a business trip, the tripod was not able to come along, so I had to make due with what I had.

My sister and I were exploring part of "our" stream we hadn't looked at before, and discovered this beautiful spot.
Aratiatia Rapids are formed when the dam gates of the Waikato River are opened a few times a day. These are also the famous rapids used in the filming of Peter Jackson's movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
This is my first attempt with the Tiltshift Maker.
This was shot from the 7th floor of Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids last month. I find the homes in this neighborhood very colorful.
Usually you can spot some special birds here but this time it was only sounds of craccling ice. Some tracks for otters could be seen too.
Recently The Grand Rapids Flickr group had a PhotoWalk with the theme being the recreation of historic architectural shots. My contact smartee_martee had a gorgeous shot of this building. I remembered taking some pictures three years ago in GR and when I got them out was surprised to see one of the same building. I cropped and edited it like Marty's so this is really just my version of his vision! Here is a link to his photostream which has an incredible series of pictures of abandoned buildings all over rural Michigan:
Shortly after taking this picture at the top of high force waterfall, a man got his kit off and had a swim, while what appeared to be his less than worried mother filmed it. Rather him than me!
Begun in 1845, the first stage of the Augusta
Canal was completed the next year. The
headgates at today's Savannah Rapids Park
were opened on November 23, 1846, and
water flowed for the first time into the canal
that had taken 200 men roughly 18 months to
build.
This is the from the WIS DOT State Rail Plan from the mid-late 1970's. At this time, the Soo and C&NW were both making a daily run from Marshfield to Nekoosa and return so I'm guessing this was from 1976 or earlier (service was provided from Adams to Marshfield after that) This document makes no mention of the bridge traffic over the Marshfield- Wi Rapids segment nor the terminating traffic at Marshfield, which was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000-1,500 cars per year. Photos of trains on this line are extremely rare.

One of the entries in the annual Grand Rapids Artprize competition, winners determined by votes of the public. Look carefully at the shadows to the right of the paper squares. Taken by Edgar.
The waters from the Niagara Falls initially accumulates over a wide area that soon narrows down as the river continues to flow North en route to merging with the Great Lakes. At the point where the river narrows, for a stretch of a few miles, the river builds up into a furious "Category 6 Rapids". The force of the water over the years has washed away all dirt on the shores, leaving nothing but big rocks. Below are more pictures.
