▶ Composed primarily of granite-gneiss migmatite rock, Arabia Mountain is a monadnock —"an isolated small mountain that rises abruptly from a gently sloping or virtually level surrounding plain."

Arabia Mountain is 955 feet (290 m) above sea level, but it rises only 172 feet (52 m) above the surrounding countryside. The hillcrest in the image is a short climb from the summit.

The Rapids Turn has stayed mostly to an 18:00 M-F call, so you need the longer days of the year to shoot its departure out of Superior.

My first Rapids shot of the year finds BNSF 1823 and 1785 heading west, about 8 miles into their trip out of Superior on the evening of April 29, 2021. The two SD40-2s have 35 cars, most of which will be set out at that their first stop in Cloquet. Around the corner near Boylston, they had just met the once per week inbound M-Kelly Lake to Superior train on the double track.

A very short Grand Rapids Local charges west into the sun following an empty coal train.

For several years, I have been used to the Red Deer River being a slow, muddy river - much like the Mississippi. And then I moved to western Alberta where the Red Deer looks completely different. It's hard to believe this is only about 100 km (60 miles) from where I previously lived.

Art on the Simonds International building in Big Rapids, MI. The artist painted 69 windows...I have captured 44 of them.

Thanks for views, comments and favs :)

Mankinjoki river rapids in autumn. The river is not big and especially here at its rapids in Espoonkartano village, the water has to rush down in a quite narrow riverbed through boulders and decayed tree trunks.

In this year the most of rivers and rapids are frozen over because hard hard frost.

Western North Carolina has plenty of rivers, beautiful basins and lots of features. The problem I have always had is, I can’t always seem to find the shot inside all of that chaos. Today was a bit different, I had stopped to shoot a waterfall, but it was low flow, uninspired, and a bit messy, all in the attempt to test my new lens. 8-16mm f2.8. Those extra 2 mm at the ultra wide end really makes a difference. When the waterfall didn’t pan out, I began appraising the river, and these rapids stuck out to me. So, to do the most I could with the time I had I crawled down the bank and perched atop a large boulder. The tripod set at an awkward angle as I worked with the environment to get the best composition I could without getting into the water.

Long exposure of the American Rapids, as they approach Niagara Falls.

A friend and I left the city at 5am for an 1 1/2 hour drive and then 30 minute hike to arrive at the rapids for sunrise.

It was a beautiful, beautiful morning.

Less than 15 minutes behind the Keetac empties came the third train in the westbound fleet. While I did know it was the 'Rapids Turn' I didn't know what it had for power so to say I was ecstatic when I saw this come into the frame is an understatement! BNSF train L-TWI620 is wheeling around the curve at MP40 on BNSF's (ex Great Northern) Lakes Sub led by BNSF 1832 and 1851, the former still dressed in its Burlington Northern Cascade Green paint 29 years after the merger. The pair of vintage EMD SD40-2s were built in Apr. 1974 and Nov. 1973 as BN 6384 and 6285 respectively and are on their home rails.

Dominating the background is SAPPI North America's massive paper mill. It traces its history back to 1898 when the Northwest Paper Company opened the first mill here on the banks of the St. Louis River. In 1964 Potlatch Corporation acquired the mill and then in 2002 it became the property of SAPPI. Employing over 700 people, the mill produces 1100 tons of paper every day and is served by its own private common carrier railroad, the Cloquet Terminal which historically was known as the Duluth and Northeastern Railroad.

From SAPPI's own page:

Our integrated pulp and paper mill in Cloquet, Minnesota, is the most modern pulp mill operating in the US. By utilizing Continuous Batch Cooking, we are able to achieve extended delignification while maintaining high yield and strength properties. Also in 2013, we further modernized the pulp mill by adding two additional batch digesters as well as an acid pre-hydrolysis stage and an ozone bleaching stage. These changes, along with modifications to our wood yard and pulp dryer, enable the mill to make either dissolving pulp for the textile market or bleached kraft pulp used for papermaking.

A little break and quite possibly a very little break from y'all having to look at my grandkids.

Although I should really try to get to this area in good light on some fine day, here is a shot of part of the rapids at Blakeney on the Mississippi River (the unmighty one in Eastern Ontario). This stretch of the river is in the edge of the Canadian Shield, which accounts, in part at least, for its rockiness.

On a damp, raw afternoon, ex-IC and GTW geeps carefully creep out across the Fox River rapids-spanning trestle at Kaukauna, Wisconsin for headroom while switching the pulp mill there. This is CN job L523, power for which is apparently being provided at the moment by EJ&E GP38-2 703.
