Full-size replica of a 17th-century Spanish Galleon in Ramsgate Harbour

A recent visit to Ramsgate allowed an evening visit to the harbour. Some of the boats had their Christmas lights on. I must try and get back when there are more lights. The rest of the evening can be seen at - davebowles.smugmug.com/Places-home-and-abroad/Great-Brita...

Taken from the top of Jacobs ladder (subject of a previous pic), various pleasure craft can be seen, plus these little bits from my memory, The building at back right (silver roof) is The Royal Victoria Pavilion and was opened in 1904 by HRH Princess Louise (in memory of her mother), it is now the largest pub in the country owned by J D Wetherspoon. Just in front is an obelisk, unveiled in 1823 in memory of King George IV on his embarkation from the town to Hanover and his safe return, it is made of Dublin Granite and weighs 100 tons and known locally as the Kings toothpick! It is now a grade 1 listed building. In front of that can be seen the clock house that houses the Maritime Museum, which has its own meridian line and that means that Ramsgate is 5mins and 21 seconds in front of GMT! Just to the left can be seen the black & red funnel of the steam tug “CERVIA” one of the museums exhibits,

If you go along the front past the colourful cafes and hotels there is a large grey building on the corner, that used to be the National Provincial Bank (now Natwest) and I opened an account there over 50 years ago! I still have the account but that building has been a pizza place for 15/20 years.

Any errors are my fault!!!!

A rare Edward VIII postbox on Marine Esplanade. As his reign was so short, less than 200 boxes were made.

Ramsgate Harbour (Outer Harbour).

Always distant and often looking into the light but my 4th diver of the year. I very much doubt I'll achieve that again.

Ramsgate railway station serves the town of Ramsgate in Thanet in Kent, England, and is at least 10 minutes' walk from the town centre. The station lies on the Chatham Main Line, 79 miles 21 chains (127.6 km) down the line from London Victoria, the Kent Coast Line, and the Ashford to Ramsgate (via Canterbury West) line. The station is managed by Southeastern, which operates all trains serving it.

Ramsgate railway station is a 1920s brick-built station thought to have been designed by James Robb Scott and Edwin Maxwell Fry, and built between 1924-6. The building is Grade II listed.

The station for Ramsgate used to be near the Harbour but was closed in 1926.

There is a motive power depot behind the station servicing electric multiple units introduced by the Southern Region following the British Railways Kent Coast Electrification.

Ramsgate had its own meridian line, sited here at the Clock House. Ramsgate Mean Time was established in 1819 and was recognised by Greenwich. These inscriptions were put up in 1822. RMT was abandoned in 1848 in favour of

Ramsgate.

Another shot from earlier in the week where I could only get a bit of the bird in.

Ramsgate Harbour.

I also found (by accident) 2 snow buntings on the west pier.

I was watching the rock pipit when a kingfisher flew past below me and appeared to land. Whilst looking for it I found the 2 buntings feeding on the face of the harbour wall.

Getting shots of the buntingzs meant putting myself in a rather precarious position. I was wondering what I would say to the insurance company if I'd have fallen into the harbour.

Hitachi test Class 930 unit No. 960201 is stabled at Ramsgate.

Two Class 310 unit Nos. 310109 and 310113 were used to create the single four-car departmental unit No. 960201. This unit could operate on either alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) lines for test purposes.

The set consisted of two driving cars, a Class 310 power car with Hitachi equipment and a modified 650 V third rail vehicle from a Class 423 (4-VEP) unit. To facilitate third rail running, shoegear was fitted to each driving car. The unit was known as the 'Hitachi Verification Train' or 'V Train' and was used by Hitachi to test and prove its traction equipment in the UK.
