Heading to the sand tomorrow and I always wondered what it would be like to have my own custom rake. We shall see ....

Walkers on the ascent of Jack's Rake on Pavey Ark in Great Langdale. Not as scary as it looks from below this is nevertheless a thrilling way to the top of Pavey Ark.

A swirling mechanical rake once functioned here as a farming tool, and now functions as a reminder of impermanence in a landscape that has experienced geological events unique to the area.

My wife and I stayed at the Big Walker Motel in Bland, Virginia. The property has a lot of antique displays around the property. Here is an antique hay rake next to a flower bed.

Unity College students got a healthy dose of service on the annual alternative spring break trip. The nine day trip saw students opt out of traditional spring break plans and instead volunteer at organizations across Maine. They maintained trails in Waldo County, built a home for Habitat for Humanity in Portland, worked at the Volunteer Regional Food Pantry, and more. Photos from Kelly Barber and Rae Vander Werf.

Horse hay-rakes gather the hay preparatory to its removal from the meadows. It is arranged with a sulky, so that the operator can ride. The spring-teeth gather the hay and retain it until the driver, by pulling the vertical lever, lifts the teeth and discharges it. The horizontal bars projecting through the teeth keep the hay from rising with them, thus insuring its complete discharge. This was a thrift find about a month ago and I am not quite sure what to do with it. But I like it. :)

B&W version of a photo stored upstream. Punched up the contrast. I think I'm finally getting the hang of digital, but I don't like all the work involved. I miss slide film.

For the 5FF critique:

This was shot at a construction site. This rake was just leaning up against this painted brick wall. Painted brick is a popular historical finish in the area where I live. I was drawn to the age, simplicity and texture of this image. I think the composition is strong. I am also very happy with the contrast. But since only one person has commented on it, I assume that other people are not seeing what I see.

And don't be afraid to say, "I don't get it. It's just an old rake up against a brick wall."

My deck of Lotería cards; more to come! The pen drawings of these will be on display at Z's on 23rd street in mid-April, and also are associated with the journal Curiosity. Once these are finished, they'll be available to purchase as actual card decks.
