Walkers on the ascent of Jack's Rake on Pavey Ark in Great Langdale. Not as scary as it looks from below this is nevertheless a thrilling way to the top of Pavey Ark.

A swirling mechanical rake once functioned here as a farming tool, and now functions as a reminder of impermanence in a landscape that has experienced geological events unique to the area.

My wife and I stayed at the Big Walker Motel in Bland, Virginia. The property has a lot of antique displays around the property. Here is an antique hay rake next to a flower bed.

Unity College students got a healthy dose of service on the annual alternative spring break trip. The nine day trip saw students opt out of traditional spring break plans and instead volunteer at organizations across Maine. They maintained trails in Waldo County, built a home for Habitat for Humanity in Portland, worked at the Volunteer Regional Food Pantry, and more. Photos from Kelly Barber and Rae Vander Werf.

A reflection on the Long Rake Spar Company. Although spar is no longer mined here, the company continues to supply stone for decorative and landscape purposes.

notice how the rake is in the wrong direction

B&W version of a photo stored upstream. Punched up the contrast. I think I'm finally getting the hang of digital, but I don't like all the work involved. I miss slide film.

For the 5FF critique:

This was shot at a construction site. This rake was just leaning up against this painted brick wall. Painted brick is a popular historical finish in the area where I live. I was drawn to the age, simplicity and texture of this image. I think the composition is strong. I am also very happy with the contrast. But since only one person has commented on it, I assume that other people are not seeing what I see.

And don't be afraid to say, "I don't get it. It's just an old rake up against a brick wall."

A beautiful New Year's Eve and K and I are married seven years now. Her Mom loved to rake and burn when Kathryn was a kid, now she has her own forest home...

Yesterday between rain storms, someone brought the disk harrow, Mark had bought, and this Minneapolis Moline Rake/Tedder. It never looked like it had seen a grease gun in years, the balls in all of the grease zerks were rusted in place but we were able to break them open, there must be 30 or more of them on the thing. We put a couple springs in place of some bailing wire on one lever so we could adjust it. Scraped off some hardened grease around the gears, so we could adjust the gears into forward or reverse, as we wanted it to go. We then started to pull it around to see how it would work, making adjustments as we needed to. It will be handy to stir the hay next year to help it dry better. This year I tried raking the hay into small windrows after 1 day to try and help it to dry but even in a small windrow it is still too thick to dry very well.

Why I haven't been on Flickr much lately....have to make hay while the sun shines!!
