A word of thanks to the contractor involved who was raking in first cut silage near Rathcormac County Cork
This is a reposted image that I've photoshopped quite a bit. I was in Playa del Carmen in 2004 enjoying Spring Break, and I would head down to the beach at 6AM to watch the sunrise, and every morning I was there, so were these guys. They were raking the beach, not for trash or any particular reason other than to make the beach pretty for the tourists. They'd start raking at 4 or 5 AM and keep going until the tourists started to show up around 7AM.
A lot of these resort towns bring in people from all over the country, attracted to the possibility of steady work at a decent wage. Most of these people leave their homes and families far behind, visiting them only once every few months. Most work 7 days a week, doing incredibly meaningless tasks like raking the sand on the beach for the tourists.
I think it takes a lot of courage to leave all their loved ones behind, to come work for spoiled tourists at a luxury resort that they'd never be able to afford. And it speaks to the difficulties of finding a living wage, even in a country like Mexico. I have nothing but sympathy for these fellows, and I wanted to take a nice picture to honor their sacrifices.
Wallasey is fortunate enough to keep several of it’s old properties which pre-date the mass urbanisation of the area. This property doesn’t bear a datestone sadly, but it has certainly been around long enough to witness change take place in its immediate area. I would imagine it was one of the farmhouses which would have been governed by ZigZag Hall which is now long since gone. To my horror, “The Rise and Progress of Wallasey” doesn’t appear to mention this building!
Kids falling into a pile of raked leaves. It was unusually warm weather in late Autumn, perfect day for raking.

Between cutting foam pieces Glen occasionally has to" mow the lawn", which in his case is 80 organic acres of alfalfa...

Be SMART when you rake leaves! Last year I raked up all the leaves and was bagging them when I accidentally bonked my head on a branch, and about a bazillion MORE leaves fell off. SO, this year I bonked my head on the branch BEFORE I raked them up. It took several bonks to get most of them off. You can also find a machine that uses air to blow them into piles for easy clean-up. And I would tell you the NAME of that machine, but I now have a terrible headache, and can't think straight.
Shit....this guy makes a rake look fat......
This is my neighbor Wilf...... he's not sick...he's just..... rake thin.....
