Excuse me....."Sweep Job" GS2 of the Finger Lakes Railroad performs its Sunday ritual, running to Solvay, NY in the morning and back to Geneva in the afternoon. The perfect setting for the weekend rail fan. Here we see the job east out of Auburn, NY with a handful cars sweeping leaves of the rails as it rolls along.
Derwentwater lies icy cold and still beneath the snow clad fells of the Western Lake District.
I had been up on this ridge the previous winter, but this year it was like an alpine walk with deep crisp snow crunching underneath my spikes. I thought it would make a great vantage point and lunch spot for John Bleakley, who had not had the pleasure of the views along Walla Crag before.
So we ploughed along the snowy ridge line, surprised to see we had quite a few fellow walkers on the summit of Lady's Rake, where I took this pano, before moving on to have a spot of lunch all alone on top of Falcon Crag.

Origins of the hay rake: One Ohio man with a passion for invention helped shape our community and the world. Edward Huber was just 26 when he earned his first of more than 100 patents. This blacksmith and inventor created the revolving wood hay rake in 1863. Huber moved to Ohio with his wife and started building and marketing the hay rake in 1865. More than 200,000 hay rakes flew off the shelves as farmers snapped up this invention which allowed one worker to accomplish what used to take seven or more people. This image is a modern version of the hay rake.

“We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality" says Iris Murdoch.
But given the state of the world, is it wise?”

On the farms where I grew up, corn was allowed to turn brown, and then the hardened cobs were harvested to be stored until they were ground for animal feed. The stalks were left in a broken mess close to the ground, and were later plowed under. The Amish repurpose the stalks, mowing them and then baling them for straw. A lot of brownish-orange dust is created. Here a team is raking the straw for later baling, and the dust mixes with the sunset to create a study in orange.
