In September 1963, as pressure was rising to end racial segregation, a racist group bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Four young black girls were killed and 22 other people injured as the bomb went off ahead of a Sunday morning service. Another two young black boys were shot dead nearby a few hours later.
Thousands of miles away in Wales, artist John Petts and the Western Mail newspaper organised a mass solidarity campaign to raise money to replace one of the stained glass windows that was destroyed in the blast. Petts designed the new window, which now has pride of place at the front of the church and is inscribed "from the people of Wales". With a rainbow background and a black Christ, his right hand blocking hatred and injustice and his left hand ushering in forgiveness, it was extremely controversial in racially segregated Alabama.

No real reason for the rainbow background except that I love the pretty colors. I chose books to read over the break, with no real theme in mind, just a mishmash of our offerings. We also have a reader's advisory wiki with tons of bibliographies, so I advertised it here.

I am a bachelor and this is my bachelor roommate *JAWS*...he's a *Rainbow Shark*. I pass by his little space often when home. He did not notice me take this picture because he was busy watching Disney's Fantasia....I think he was waiting for that pretty pink Fantail with the large eyelashes to come back into view...

I've admired this tag and artist for a long while now and when I couldn't find a space big enough within the festival area to paste this wizard I remembered this spot and when I went to see it the landscape and rainbow background totally sold me, as did the fact that now it's as if the wizard was just strolling along and stumbled upon this MEAT tag and was amazed!
