The Crawley Horticultural Society organised a quiz night. My friend John is a member and he's also a member of the Crawley U3A Quiz Group. Four of us made up a team (we could have had two more but they had to drop out)
All the teams were given the names of flowers, we were the Hostas … and we won both parts of the quiz 🎉
A Happy New Year to all my viewers!
Mister C's class 31 location quiz for your Christmas 2014 entertainment required you to identify the 9 locations in the grid.
Andy the First swept to victory with 9 out of 9 in double quick time, followed by Dan (dlc456) who also got 9 out of 9. In third place was Andy the Second with 8 out of 9.
There was also "highly commended" entries from Marra Man, vb31262MR and GerardTCC here on flickr.
And here are the answers going left to right for each row of the grid:
1. Rhyl 31102 1336 Manchester-Ludo 03/08/91;
2. Skegness 31160 1322 to Sheffield 14/07/90;
3. Downham Market 31432 1150 Cambridge-Kings Lynn 24/03/90;
4. Whittlesford 31415 5K08 Cambridge-Southend 29/08/91;

9. Harringay 31402+462 KingsX-Cambridge sand empties 27/08/91.

What kind of shrimp is this? I saw it only meters from the beach in front of our dive shop.
The first correct answer I receive will win a free cocktail during his/her next visit to us at Amontillado on the Philippine island of Negros.
Our vantage point here is directy over the summit of Ruby Peak, looking down on Diablo Lake. We can see across Thunder Creek to Colonial Peak [which looks rather short from up here], and back down the Skagit Valley all the way to Sauk Mt. In fact, we can see all the way down to Puget Sound, 70 miles away, from here, altho it is faint in the mist. Mt. Baker and Mt Shuksan dominate the skyline at the top right.
Skagitrenee was my very first friend on Flickr. Her name got my attention! I found out that she lived in the Skagit Valley, closer to the coast than my daughter. We made plans to meet in person - and we have been visiting each year ever since!
So - Renee - can you locate Sauk Mountain? Or the mountainside you live on? [hint: the whitish Sauk River is visible at Rockport]
;-)
Well here goes. The Esteemed Quizmaster General Andy (a.k.a Silsonroadrunner) suggested many months ago I compile a collage of pictures to form the basis of a quiz.
I have therefore risen to the challenge and done so and this is a toe in the water so to speak. If it's popular I might try some more to complement Andy's established Bank Holiday quiz's.

The Christmas entertainment was to is identify the locations for the 9 class 31 pictures in the grid. That seemed to work as there were lots of entries and lots of people kept entertained trying to identify the locations, which were these.
1. Peterborough 31113 16/08/89 0714 Stowmarket to Peterborough dmu drag;
2. Wigan North Western 31123 18/08/89 1407 Liverpool-Preston;
3. Sheffield 31178 22/07/89 1745 to Leeds dmu drag;
4. Magdalen Road 31327 16/08/89 1528 Kings Lynn-Cambridge;
5. Preston I think it is 31467 18/08/89 unid Euston-Blackpool;
6. Leicester 31462+415 12/08/89 1335 Yarmouth-Birmingham;
7. Barrow in Furness 31101 14/08/89 0927 Barrow-Manchester;
8. Lincoln Central 31468 22/07/89 1313 Skegness-Sheffield;
9. Royston 31458 dumped in the yard after failing on an engineers train no date.
The winner was Clagmaster (Herman) who had all 9 by 27 December;
Second was Andy! who finally got Lincoln Central on 30 December;
Third was GerardTCC who got all except Royston.
A lot of people struggled with Magdalen Road (a lot of Waterbeach), Preston (a few Crewe), Lincoln Central (a few Nottingham) and Royston. As Mr Sluff said, number 9 is on your doorstep!
Now I need to sort out more negs for scanning to find material for next year!

Q: What Is A Syndicate Quiz?
A: A general knowledge quiz for teams of up to 6 people. You write the answer on a piece of paper and take it to the 'command table' run by the entertainment team. The winning team each evening gets a bottle of P&O wine (which is denigrated by the staff). Winners get deducted a point next time they play. It can get very competitive- histrionics and sulking ;p
Trivia games or quizzes are a cruise ship staple that Niccy and I both enjoy. We can hold our own for the most part, occasionally winning and always having a good time. They're usually a pretty civil affair but we did get a shock on P&O.
Seems that the P&O crowd takes these things quite seriously. Kind of like taking the SATs here in the US, the GCSE for my UK brethren. Don't talk, don't laugh, don't step out of line or you'll be called on it. C'mon people, it's just a game!
The "prize" for winning the quiz is a bottle of P&O branded plonk, probably the leftovers from Ernest and Julio Gallo after they've filled all the boxes at the factory. Not something you'd bring to a dinner and certainly not something you'd brag about.
Needless to say Niccy and I failed miserably for the most part since the questions were very UK centric which we should have expected. Oh well, we're gearing up for our next trip on Holland America where we plan to dominate!
BTW, we were on our own every night, no one wanted to team up with us. We both used deodorant and toothpaste so we don't understand why? ;-)
Quiz, 1 objet en 4 photos mais qui suis je donc ? ;-))
Bonnes fêtes de fin d'année à tous !

Dear Radio Friend: Thank you for the interesting question you submitted for the Quiz Kids. We are checking it for program balance, entertainment value and accuracy. Obviously, the matter of program balance is important, so a question unsuitable for this week might be very acceptable later. We have received hundreds of questions, and since we have only 30 minutes a week, it will be impossible to use all the good ones, but we will use every one that time permits. In the event a question submitted by you is used, your Zenith Portable Radio will be shipped the day following the program. We hope you will tell all your friends to listen to this interesting program. Again, accept our thanks and the best of luck. Quiz Kids Question Editor

9 class 31 pics taken 1987-89, all you had to do was identify the locations, and here are the answers!
1. Barton on Humber 31439 1400 to Cleethorpes 20 December 1988;
2. Selby 31419 1322 Holyhead-Hull 30 July 1988;
3. Norwich 31166 1010 from Ely 17 October 1987;
4. Blackpool North 31196 1544 from Nottingham 2 September 1987;
5. Colchester 31412 vans to Liverpool Street 24 October 1987;
6. Penrith 31454 1157 Lancaster-Carlisle 11 March 1989;
7. Cambridge is it 31413 or 31415 late October 1987;
8. Melton Mowbray 31413 1640 Norwich-Birmingham 11 May 1988;
9. Shrewsbury 31460+450 1510 Aber-Euston 21 August 1988.
4 entrants got all 9 correct, though nobody achieved that at the first attempt. In order of receipt these were:
dlc456 who had an advantage in being there when a lot were fotted;
Marra Man, who got 8 very quickly but was stumped for a long time by Selby;
GerardTCC, who was also there when a lot were fotted;
Tulyarman with a late run on the rails, and the only entrant to identify Selby first go.
The class 26 was a red herring, at Cambridge for a Network Day.
Thanks to all who entered, and I hope others also enjoyed the challenge even if they didn't make an entry.
Finally Happy New Year to all!

Crawley U3A has a quiz group which meets once a month and is very enjoyable. We play in teams of three or four which are selected at random each time. A different member of the group acts as quizmaster for each session. The team I was in didn't do too badly coming second out of four - but we came a cropper on the collective names of various creatures (6-10 in the second round) … and we only got five out of twenty of the names of US state capitals, we'd have done better if we'd learnt this song. 😟
Class! Today we are going to have a QUIZ!
Name which game that goes with which Q.
I hope I can get each Q back to the right game box!
and I still haven't quite reached my Q quota for this quarter!
I baked today, spend few hours in the kitchen.
Hard work.
There was a Nordic comic book quiz this evening. Time for answers was only couple of hours, and questions were plenty and really difficult. Three teams from Finland participated, one team from Tampere and that team gathered in our home. Coffee, tea and pastries before the quiz.
Our team was second!!!! Yay!!! team from Skåne, Sweden won.
Here are the questions:
We now have a winner, and it is dlc456. Jonesy38 is second with 8 and Clagmaster third with 7.
The answers are:
1. Lancaster 31413 prior to working 1439 to Carlisle on 11 March 1989.
2. Kettering 31464 1820 St Pancras-Derby 20 May 1988.
3. Manchester Piccadilly 31448 1407 to Birmingham 14 August 1988.
4. Chesterfield 31427 1735 York-Paddington 14 August 1988.
5. Liverpool Street 31414 1447 ex Witham 14 December 1988.
6. Patricroft 31101 1259 Manchester Victoria-Liverpool 15 August 1989.
7. Burton on Trent 31434 23 August 1988.
8. Littleport 31424 1935 Kings Lynn-Cambridge 18 June 1988.
9. Barrow in Furness 31272 off 0630 from Manchester Victoria 18 August 1989.
As I expected, 6 and 8 were the most difficult. Not many entries this time, perhaps people grappling with refurbished flickr or making use of the good Bank Holiday weather. Perhaps this is better as a Christmas/New Year thing?
No I'm not off to play Scrabble and Snooker with my friend it's a different kind of Quiz Night as I squeezed my body into my super-tight sparkiling cobalt-blue Quiz evening dress. It was just a size-eight and I just prayed that it might fit as I loved it. Thankfully it is a bodycon so it went on even though it was a bit like a tight glove.
Okay lets play :) who knows what Míša took a photo of, can earn 100points (don´t know what you can do with them yet but nevermind :) )
I ran a quiz at the Crawley Camera Club this evening. There were about twenty members present who formed up into five teams. The first round was anagrams of the names of 26 photographers - and the score for that round was added in at the end. Rounds three and seven had nine questions and the other four rounds had ten questions. (This is entirely contrary to my usual policy of having the same number of questions in each round - thus I did not have jokers to double the score.)
Round two was plainly the hardest, I showed portraits of ten well-known photographers but they were not readily recognised... their photographs in round six were better known.
Wer kriegt heraus, wen diese Figur darstellen soll und in welcher Stadt sie sich befindet?
Who finds out who should represent the character and in which city it is located?
Lösung:
Paul McCartney! Er spielt den 4 seitigen Höfner Bass!!
Hard Day’s Night Hotel, Liverpool, England
"Ein absolutes Highlight, welches das Hotel von allen anderen in Liverpool – und vermutlich weltweit – unterscheidet, sind die steinernen Popgiganten. Vier lebensgroße Steinskulpturen von John, Paul, George und Ringo säumen heute die Fassade und halten die Erinnerungen an die Beatles lebendig. "
