How to prevent pregnancies in young women was the challenge IDEO was asked to address. Their solution was to create a funny, yet wise, system of support to ensure that nothing trips up prevention. Aside from these informative and light-hearted videos, the system also includes a guide, documentaries about birth control methods, as well as a system of reminders about clinic appointments, prescription refills, and when to pop the pill. “Bedsider says: Go out, have sex, be yourself—and choose when the time is right to have a baby.”

Now on YouTube

When I saw Steve Jobs demoing the iPad at the ominous Apple Keynote I asked myself: Isn't it just a big iPod touch? That time my answer to the question was "yes, it is, nothing more". Now, that I have seen the device, touched it, and used it, I can state that software-wise it might be "just a fat iPod touch", but when you start using it, it is certainly much more.

I don't know how it could fit into my life, and I surely don't need one… but I want one. :)

Salmon street fountain earlier today. This is a short Quicktime movie(image sequence or time lapse) made from 495 small jpeg images. Each image was reduced about 25% to about 600x330 pixels. The pictures are each 1 second exposures taken every 3 seconds. A B+W solid neutral density filter was used to blur the movement. It's one of the first times I've tried this and the first time I've been able to successfully upload the mov file. The file is 115mb and took a good 20 minutes to upload. (not dial up)

Definitely check out Andrew Curtis' time lapse movies from here in Portland. They're the best ones I've seen.

Question: Why Did The Koala Cross The Road?

Answer: To visit the chicken! Well, perhaps to look for more food...who really knows?

I just wish I had more space on my camera memory, as I would have loved to have captured this amazing sequence as a Quicktime movie.

I know there is a lot of shots, but these are all in sequence of about 30 seconds as this large koala descended from a tree RIGHT next to me, then SLOWLY ambled across the road, then checked out several trees before continuing along the road - it was only the approach of a very large and menacing dog that frightened it into a rapid ascent.

This was such a wonderful moment - a completely wild and free koala, completely undisturbed by my presence. I have NEVER seen this behaviour before! Perhaps 10 tens at Warrandyte I have disturbed a koala on the ground, but they immediately run to get away from anyone, and are far more fearful and frightened of people.

This was a truly wonderful experience.

This is the koala I referred to before that disturbed all the parrots in my previous photos!

Raymond Island, Gippsland Lakes, Eastern Victoria, Australia

This wonderful, beautiful, wild and free koala lives on Raymond Island, a tiny island but a known koala sanctuary - in Victoria's Gippsland Lakes, some 280km from Melbourne where I live.

I have just returned from a week's holiday, this afternoon, and I took many photos of this, and other koalas, all living wild and free amongst human habitation - mainly holiday homes, but a number of permanent residents too.

These koalas have no fear of people, and unfortunately no fear of cars - this koala was nearly run over crossing the road, right in front of several cars, but fortunately people drive carefully here!

I was busy photographing parrots, when the birds all flew away - and when I turned around, this koala climbed down a tree right next to me, and ambled slowly RIGHT next to me! It was not at all concerned, which was FANTASTIC!

What a thrill to see this koala wild and free, and very healthy.

Stay tuned for plenty more photos from this week!

Aloha,

You can view this animation of my latest photographic experiments in a web browser (or this email); but opening in Quicktime is best. To Open in Quicktime, drag file onto the QT icon, then go > "COMMAND L" (FOR LOOP) (Control L if on PC) and press the space bar to start the animation. You might like it? If not (too fast, confusing, etc), just stop the quicktime playback (press space bar again to toggle on-off); then ARROW KEY left or right to advance frame by frame.

These are all 8 second exposures with two RGB LIGHT STRIPS of different kinds. The larger, longer has 60 LEDs and the inner one, 30 LEDs. The patterns are programmed via the Microcomputers attached to the Visual Music Machine wheel that is spun by hand (faster or slower depending on the speed of the changing pattern) with the LEDS mounted on a solid brace attached to the bicycle wheel (spokes).

As I spin the wheel, I either stay put, move faster or slower or "freeze" in two different places, and variations inbetween, as I keep my hand on the wheel to control rate of spin. Only in rare cases do I let the spin go for more than 2 revolutions (seen in some images).

From time to time, I have reversed the spin of the wheel after "backlighting" one of my freeze positions; which helps to define the body form. I also began to use the on camera flash to render my face visible. Please excuse my mammoth belly aborated by the long exposure and my movement during it (no...I'm not pregnant) :-)

I finally persuaded the family to do a photo-shoot for our Winter Holiday greeting card. I got my studio setup with my new White Lightning X1600 strobes (thanks dad) and the tunes playing (I went with the "Curious George" movie soundtrack as I knew my son would like that). Much goofiness ensued...and this is the video to prove it.

Please no comments about the production values here....there aren't any...so you will surely be mocked for mentioning them. ;-)

Taken February 2006 in Douglas AZ.

(Tedious technical info: I rotated this from original MOV file using QuickTime Pro for Win, then exported to QuickTime Movie format before uploading. After multiple experiments, this method finally seems to have done the trick with retaining the rotation, preserving the correct aspect ratio, and preserving image quality. The original clip is pretty primitive, but you've gotta love these two...)

This is a timelapse video made during the sunrise. It starts at about 4 am and finish at 10 am and used a total of 2218 pictures taken every 10 seconds. I made it in September 2011 but I had not uploaded it yet to Flickr or Youtube. You can see how light slowly changes as the sun appears and how the neighbors (and myself in the white car on the left) leave home to go to work. Video built using Quicktime Pro.

Music of Barbara Streisan (Memory). Please enjoy and leave a comment if you like it.
