I was very fortunate to make a quick trip across the continent from Canberra to Perth to give a presentation as part of a business forum. These events tend to be very demanding so it was good to find that I had just enough time to step outside in the lunch break to take a quick stroll around the block and freshen up both physically and mentally.
The southwest region of Western Australia is well known for its spring wildflower displays, and the gardens around Perth overflow with many of the local species that have been cultivated for planting in domestic gardens.
These pretty Geraldton Wax flowers caught my eye and I couldn't resist taking a few photographs with my iPhone 5s before hurrying back to the meeting.
Wax flowers are endemic to the southwest of Western Australia, and the Geraldton Wax is by far the most well-known and widely cultivated species. The expression "growing like weeds" might be applied to these plants in Perth and they are indeed regarded by some to be environmental weeds despite their beautiful appearance.
"They belong to the myrtle family Myrtaceae and have flowers similar to those of the tea-trees (Leptospermum)."

"Geraldton wax (Chamelaucium uncinatum) is regarded as an environmental weed in those parts of Western Australia where it has become naturalised outside its native range. For example, it has escaped from plantings at Kings Park in Perth and invaded nearby bushland areas. This species is noted to be seriously invasive in some situations in south-western Western Australia, and can cause major structural changes to the plant communities that it invades."

After flying around for quite some time, this bird finally takes rest on this branch. With the strong smell of the sea breeze, neither it or I will stay long at this location.

I thought of a quick potato soup made from boiled potatoes, milk and fried onion, to be served with winter dishes. This recipe is perfect for the working ladies as they can make it while preparing the foods for serving or while warming pre-made foods.
