Can the UK have its cake and eat it too? Must we choose energy security, climate amenity or food security?
These thoughts are forever with me. So instead of going out to photograph a topic, I've just dug about among the photographs which Richard Harvey UK was enjoying because it was he who was asking the deep questions about what we can afford. We thank you for your leadership, and asking the hard questions!
My surroundings are always too hot, too dry, too cold, too infertile… When touring my ancestral counties, the ones my gardening and farming ancestors left, I look at them and ask: why did they leave such beautiful land? Of course it's never that simple. Theirs was a world of non-conformist religion, alienation and a landless existence, always bound to serve someone else. Why wouldn't they leave?
Now, of course, the UK is more inclusive, the fetish with farming sheep for wool to break the stranglehold of the Flemish cloth guilds etc are behind us so now choices are easier; aren't they?
Last week we visited the Church of St Maurice at Plympton, in Devonshire. Continuing, we might as well review what else I saw there and what it means to these questions.
Let's begin with the topic of where food familiarity and desires take us. The climate of the UK is not well adapted to the production of, say, mangoes, melons, tomatoes, lemon grass and bananas. But its land is fertile and productive for the cabbage family, wheat in the south, oats and barley in the north, onions, leeks and garlic. If the land will grow wool, it'll grow meat, and so on. Part of the question might be what we call food and what do we want to eat? Park this thought: it was the alienation from the countryside by the urbanisation of the populace to provide fodder for the "Industrial Revolution" which shaped the diet of the UK. Post-colonial immigration and servants of the Crown returning from colonial posts, among other things, catalysed modern trends.
Here in the foreground, among the burials in the churchyard, some of you might recognise Mahonia, the "Oregon grape", state floral emblem of Oregon. Actually it has been reclassified as Berberis. That does nothing to change its character. Not only does it produce edible fruit, like here on this otherwise waste ground, it contains a chemical that is being explored for promise in combating bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Sure, its implicated as a host for Wheat yellow rust, but if you aren't growing wheat or a susceptible variety — who's that going to hurt? Bees adore its sweet smelling flowers and they make honey, which is a good synergy because the berries are tart. Don't forget you can also grow sugar beets. Yes, its more work than cheap imports of cane sugar, a tale begun with Caribbean slavery. Think of the benefits to the NHS if sugar wasn't so cheap!
Around the "feet" of the Mahonia there is Cyclamen persica. I don't have any decent photographs of them because the light was atrocious. Around the Mediterranean and into the Middle East, the leaves of this plant are eaten, even substituting for grape leaves in the Palestinean Za' matoot, a version of the familiar dolmades stuffed with rice, lamb and spices and served with yoghurt. So, you can't grow rice in the UK. But you can grow barley, sheep aren't a problem, the Romans brought you coriander, milk ferments everywhere and what's Saffron Walden named after?
I could go on, and probably will. But that's just a few things within one tiny churchyard. We've got a whole country to explore! Looking at my situation, yours is one of milk and honey.

I loved this short story that I heard on the radio program: This American Life from July 2003. The title of the episode is
"Call in Colonel Mustard For Questioning." It reminds me of a character I have created, except this guy is the real thing, so I felt I had to draw this story. I once thought sending it to TAL as a completed pamphlet but alas it has sat in my file drawer so here it is. Text is transcripts from TAL's website.

If you get offended easily when questioning Christianity...please don't read this:
First of all..here is a Good Friday joke for you. (I know, bad...I know.)
Was Judas the Fall Guy? No, Lee Majors was.
Secondly...Duane, that is the bread we are eating for dinner tonight.
I'm a Christian, but I always like to question the ideals of religion. (I consider myself 1/4 Buddhist) I have always felt very badly for Judas. I mean, you needed Judas! Jesus knew it. I know the arguments about free will and all that. So what if Judas said, you know what? He's my bud, I'm not gonna turn him in. Does God rally up another fallguy? This was always part of the plan, free will had nothing to do with it. They were all in on it. So to speak.
Any way you look at it, the subject of Judas, whether you believe that Jesus was the Son of God or not, is a fascinating subject.
E.J. Dionne Jr. ["A New Twist on Judas," op- ed, April 14] said, "It can be argued that by betraying Jesus, Judas set salvation in motion." He also said that reconsidering Judas "might be consistent with the [Easter] season's message of salvation and redemption." Those ideas may be in keeping with our culture's "feel-good" approach to life, but they hardly are in tune with the Bible.
From the UK Independent...which is a GREAT article by the way:
Scholars have, however, been questioning his role, and asking why the Church for centuries laid such stress on it. That role has actually always been ambiguous, if only because the Gospels insist that Jesus knew that one of his apostles would betray him, "that the scriptures might be fulfilled" . If so, then Judas may be seen almost as a scapegoat, the man forced by destiny to play this part. One may ask why it was necessary that one of the apostles should betray him since Christ's arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection could, one assume, have taken place without any act of treachery. Was Judas, one wonders, necessary to the authors of the Gospels principally for dramatic effect?

and since I've been listening to it on my IPod all day, Judas and Jesus excerpt form The Last Supper, Jesus Christ Superstar:
Judas
Cut out the dramatics! You know very well who -
Jesus
Why don't you go do it?
Judas
You want me to do it!
Jesus
Hurry they are waiting
Judas
If you knew why I do it . . .
Jesus
I don't care why you do it!
Judas
To think I admired you
For now I despise you
Jesus
You liar - you Judas
Judas
You wanted me to do it!
What if I just stayed here
And ruined your ambition?
Christ you deserve it!
Jesus
Hurry you fool, hurry and go,
Save me your speeches
I don't want to know - Go! Go!

The Story:
I made this series of vessels in 2011. It was a time when I was questioning and examining form and the techniques required in the making of simple shapes. As a craftsman and in particular a glassmaker, I am always working to improve my abilities and techniques. However, during that period in 2011, I kept questioning myself: Why was I trying so hard to create perfectly symmetrical and balanced shapes? Why was I continually focusing on technique to make tight and controlled forms?
I decided to slow down and take a different approach at how I was going to touch or tool the glass. By paying close attention to subtle nuances that were manifesting throughout the hot-making process, I let the material guide me, allowing these forms to take shape. Looking back, I feel that the beauty of these pieces are in their details. The subtle refinement and attention paid to details can elevate a piece making it more successful and complete.
Visually, these pieces can appear rough to the eyes but the surfaces are very soft and glassy to the touch. During the hot making process the molten glass bubble is dunked or submerged into a bucket of water with a baking-soda mixture. This process cracks the surface of the glass and squeezes the bubble creating random patterns. Sometimes the surface will split open a little, forming a gouge or indent on the surface. I find these random occurrences very beautiful. Having this loose quality within the making process really allows each piece to have its own character, its own patina and story.

I've been finding and questioning persons who were at the shutdown of I 80 on the 11th. There were many more persons who marched to the interstate and stood on the road side (where drivers were honking in support) than there were persons who stepped out onto the road. My informants have told me that the persons who stayed by the road did so because they thought it might cause an accident or because they thought it would be counterproductive and cause their issues to get lost in this discussion of the action. It seems they were right. By the way I am also told that there were about 200 high school students who came to the protests that night but the march to the highway had already left and the high schoolers stayed at a rally on the Pentacrest downtown
For my substained investigation I am questioning how color affects the way we feel. To go with my investigation I decided to take a photo of red and green flowers. It would show contrast making the flowers more vibrant making you feel energized but with the black and white you dont feel that anymore. In my photo with the fire I made a fire in my fireplace and got really close to it to make sure I got good interesting angles and put my camera on manual mode. I used emphasis in that photo with the fire. With color you would feel warmth and comfort.
