POST is an ongoing project where I am questioning, do postboxes still have a place in our society? In my generation the everyday analogue process of posting a letter is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Postboxes lie dormant, statues and monuments of a bygone era. The premise of this project is to revisit this analogue process to get as many people involved as possible, mailing postcards in the form of photographs.

Inspired by the Mail Art projects, I want people to photograph postboxes in their travels, print them off and write a reflective statement on the back of the photograph (postcard) and return it to me. These entries will act as the thoughts of the individual in their travels in their day to day lives much in the same way people tweet and update their Facebook statuses. The collection will form a record of people keeping this analogue process alive. All “postcards” sent to me will feature both on the POST blog site, and will feature in the book.

Here's how you can get involved:

1. Take a picture of a Postbox either in your travels or one close to home.

(Landscape as opposed to portrait)

2. Print out at 6 x 4, write a reflective statement on the back of the photo.

(Sorta like a diary entry)

3. Stamp it and return it to: 166 Vandyke Road, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, LU7 3HS.

Thanks for taking part!

Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret'd), Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia and Mrs. Joan Grant were delighted to host Robert Chisholm, Member of Parliament for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour and his nominees for the presentation of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals during a ceremony at Government House Halifax. The nominees included award winning musician Joel Plaskett who has been a prominent figure on the Canadian indie rock scene for more than twenty years; and Aaron Stevens, who volunteers his time to make Nova Scotia safer for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth through his work with the Youth Project and Gay-Straight Alliances in schools across the province as well as dedicating his efforts for several other anti-bullying, health promotion and diversity initiatives.

Glamorous? project: photo shoot questioning the glamour of the fashion industry with problems of anorexia existing. The project was inspired by the outrage that Mark Fast's 'Making Knitwear Sexy' fashion show caused when he used plus sized models. I used warm lighting and colours to make the model appear healthy in the 'Glamorous' side of the shoot, then black and white in the 'Glamorous?' side of the shoot to highlight the stress which the models go through when under the pressure to be thin. I made a pocket watch necklace for this shoot, the chains moved with the body as the model switched poses for the camera. The small watch faces were a subtle reminder that there isn't much time left for these girls who are depriving their bodies of food, and often taking drugs to stay the shape that they are. The denim jacket on this page was part of a textile project: I used a complex pattern for an office jacket but used materials from the Punk era to create the final piece. The shining silver studs reflected the light of the camera flashes as well as the blues of the navy coloured denim they were set into.

The jutting bones of the model inspired me to look into the Heroin Chic fashion movement which was in it's full swing during the 1990's. This project set a foundation for my Skeletal Structures project.

"“Here is a new game,” said Scrooge. “One half hour, Spirit, only one!”

It was a Game called Yes and No, where Scrooge’s nephew had to think of something, and the rest must find out what; he only answering to their questions yes or no, as the case was. The brisk fire of questioning to which he was exposed, elicited from him that he was thinking of an animal, a live animal, rather a disagreeable animal, a savage animal, an animal that growled and grunted sometimes, and talked sometimes, and lived in London, and walked about the streets, and wasn’t made a show of, and wasn’t led by anybody, and didn’t live in a menagerie, and was never killed in a market, and was not a horse, or an ass, or a cow, or a bull, or a tiger, or a dog, or a pig, or a cat, or a bear. At every fresh question that was put to him, this nephew burst into a fresh roar of laughter; and was so inexpressibly tickled, that he was obliged to get up off the sofa and stamp. At last the plump sister, falling into a similar state, cried out:

“I have found it out! I know what it is, Fred! I know what it is!”

“What is it?” cried Fred.

“It’s your Uncle Scro-o-o-o-oge!”

Which it certainly was. Admiration was the universal sentiment, though some objected that the reply to “Is it a bear?” ought to have been “Yes;” inasmuch as an answer in the negative was sufficient to have diverted their thoughts from Mr. Scrooge, supposing they had ever had any tendency that way.

“He has given us plenty of merriment, I am sure,” said Fred, “and it would be ungrateful not to drink his health. Here is a glass of mulled wine ready to our hand at the moment; and I say, ‘Uncle Scrooge!’ ”

“Well! Uncle Scrooge!” they cried.

“A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the old man, whatever he is!” said Scrooge’s nephew. “He wouldn’t take it from me, but may he have it, nevertheless. Uncle Scrooge!”

Mulled wine and marzipan."

The origin of this piece came from questioning what it means to “move.” The artist focused on the concept of time, which is closely related to movement, and attempted to use movement to create a visual representation of time. Using this technique, the artist searches for the meaning of time, movement, and the relationship between them from several different angles. At first glance, this piece just looks like a lump of mesh material, but by projecting light through the slits, it recreates the movements of people walking. They are people filmed at the crossing of the various countries visited by the artist, and are diverse in age, gender, and race. When they are reorganized onto one timeline, this diverse group of people forms a sort of community walking toward some kind of goal, in which there is an inherent movement that differs from physical movement.

For my sustained investigation I am questioning how color affects the way we feel. To go with it this week I decided to take a picture of applesauce and a orange. I wanted to focus more on foods this week instead of nature. To take this photo I got a gogo squeeze and poured it all out on a cutting board. I then moved it around with a knife to get a good position. Then I used ceiling lighting and used movement in the photo. To take the second photo I grabbed a orange, cut it in half, then used ceiling lighting to get good textures on the orange. I used pattern balance in this photo.

Materials: digital camera, photoshop, ceiling lighting

Process: put applesauce on a cutting board and rearranged it a little to get a good position.

A Mayday demonstrator protesting the war in Indochina is shown with the U.S. Capitol dome in the background May 5, 1971.

During this demonstration, U.S. Representative James Collins (R-TX) confronted antiwar protesters and questioning their patriotism. One protester outraged by revelations of U.S. torture in Indochina, responded by asking Collins:

“How would you like to have your testicles wired to a battery?” –Washington Daily News, May 6, 1971.

Nearly the entire crowd of 1,200 was arrested.

However, years later a U.S. District court jury ordered D.C. police chief Jerry Wilson and Capitol police chief James Powell to pay a combined $12 million in damages to those arrested at the Capitol. It was the first in history that damages had been awarded to persons who cited violations of their rights under the U.S. constitution rather than civil rights laws.

This is called the Rattlesnake Shaman’s Cave, in the Rodman Mountains, California. I have sat long and looked at it, and I don’t believe it.

The cave is filled with jagged, tilted surfaces, not loose rocks. Almost impossible to crouch in it, let alone sit.

I see a possible rattlesnake petroglyph on the upper left. I don’t accept the vertical bubbly lines just above the dark opening as snakes. I’ve seen those marks in other areas near ancient springs which climate change has now dried up. And puddles of water do still occasionally appear in the wash below this site.

Thus, even at my amateur level, the debate about the meaning of these ancient marks goes on and on....
