Questioning Space 2019

In a math-talk community, teachers can support students by asking questions that encourage students to figure out mistakes independently.

Questioning.

CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE WARRIOR, Iraq – Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Advise and Assist Task Force, 1st Infantry Division, conduct an interview with an Iraqi citizen during a patrol of Kirkuk, Iraq, Aug. 26, 2011. My take on this impressive and thought provoking contemporary sculpture.

Gazing down upon those visiting it, 20 foot tall Knife Angel was constructed in 2018 by Alfie Bradbury. It aims to promote an anti violence, anti aggression ethos. I hope people are listening.

Here we see a questioning, desperately sad face of an angel statue along with some of the 100,000 knives which form its fabric. They include kitchen knives, horrifying in their ordinariness, flick knives, samurai swords and homemade weapons. The knives were donated by 43 police forces in the UK, some obtained via knife amnesties, others delivered still in their evidential packaging. Perhaps the boys 'n girls in blue were making a point. If so, it's a very valid one; valid enough to be included on the project's online publicity, as is the fact that some blades were stained, apparently by blood.

All the blades used were sterilised and blunted. The 150,000 donated blades that could not be used were recycled.

Ben Kinsella, aged 16, was killed in 2008 by a knife wielded by a group of thugs he had never met who mistook him for someone else. There but for The Grace of God go any of us. In 2009 three young men were convicted of his murder, each receiving life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 19 years and upward.

I've checked the website of the trust set up in Ben's name. It notes that in the 12 months from March 2022 there was a 5% increase in knife crime; that the police recorded 50,489 knife offences over the same period; and that that represents a 75% increase over the previous 10 years. The operative word here is "recorded". Knife crime is one of those crimes which police tend not to be told about; they usually discover it for themselves unless someone gets hurt. Even then, remember, those involved in criminality may resolve their differences in a rather more robust manner than do the rest of us. Circumstances where a person, suffering from knife wounds self presents, or is summarily presented by others, at hospital are far from unknown and when police are called the officer may be given pretty short shrift. Reporting incidents to the police may result in one's own activities being scrutinised, so an injured criminal may seek and apply very directly their own form of justice, and so we go on. The statistics therefore are difficult to interpret but they represent deeply worrying criminality around crimes which largely remain hidden either until knives are used or until the police discover them through their own proactivity such as stop and search. There's a whole contentious debate to be had there, so let's start one.

Proactive cops, keeping us safe by taking knives from and arresting those who may well be minded to (or even on their way to) use them deserve far more of our thanks and admiration than they usually get for the physical, mental, legal and reputational risks they take on our behalf. Any blade they seize may represent lives saved, but as we can never know what has been prevented, none of us can know that we should be particularly grateful to individual officers for the world of pain they may have saved us. Nevertheless, there are those who protest loudly, perhaps due to injured feelings (bless them!); as a routine tactic to obstruct police; to reflect their own personal agendas (some simply don't like police, and it ain't compulsory to do so); or perhaps they are simply members of the 'how dare police talk to me' set. It's an unavoidable fact that when police police, someone will be on the receiving end of it. The trick is to make sure that that someone is the right someone, but certainty is an elusive concept in life. The law accepts this, requiring officers to act upon 'reasonable grounds to suspect'. You will note that the word 'evidence', beloved of the tedious bar room lawyers our police officers routinely encounter, is not even mentioned in that test. Those who don't believe that should Google PACE, and look up section one of the Police And Criminal Evidence Act 1984. Others who believe that police should be right (whatever that is) 100% of the time and should be out there "chasing real criminals" rather than causing minor inconvenience to them should reflect that few omelets are made without breaking eggs. Rant over.

Happily, as I took this photo, two cops had incorporated Knife Angel into their patrol, and dear wife was shamelessly chatting them up. Good for her, and stay safe guys.

Knife Angel is presently in Colchester as part of a nationwide tour. Its website will tell you if it will visit your town. The photo was taken as shown, with loads of processing necessary to lift a rather flat initial image. That included darkening the background, playing with highlights and shadows, enhancing colours and some experimentation with Photoshop adjustment layers.

I hear a lot of people questioning how BAD I really am. Look, just because I'm good in puppy class, and already know sit, down, wait, kiss, shake hands and here not to mention retrieving real ducks on land and water doesn't mean a thing.

I'm my own puppy. I do what I want, and if I want to be good, that's bad. Get it? So hush you puppies.

JOCHEN LEMPERT

25 MAYO – 23 SEPTIEMBRE 2018

INAUGURACIÓN 24 MAYO 20:00

COMISARIO MIGUEL WANDSCHNEIDER

MAY 25 - SEPTEMBER 23, 2018

OPENING 24 MAY 20:00

COMMISSIONER MIGUEL WANDSCHNEIDER

Jochen Lempert's work (Germany, 1958) deals with the photographic medium from the visual and from the research; often, with the intention of questioning the search criteria for truth and the models that build the world. The artist portrays the animal world in the most diverse contexts: from the natural habitat to the Natural History museum, from the zoo to the city, in remote places or in banal situations or objects. In his relentless search, Lempert has managed to create a vast archive of images covering a broad spectrum that ranges from everyday views to compositions that tend toward abstraction.

This interest in the natural world as a subject is complemented by his exhaustive exploration of the properties and materiality of the photographic image. Analog, black and white and positive in the dark room, his photographs resist any categorization, outside the canons of current aesthetics. The fact that his images are unframed, directly attached to the wall, brings to his work texture, an almost objectual sensuality and an extraordinary immediacy that invite the viewer to observe more closely.

But the attentive and shrewd look of the artist is not limited to the moment in which he shoots or processes the material, but his work grows from and through space. In his presentations he resorts to groups and scale games that respond to the place of exhibition. The placement and selection of the material start from an attentive elaboration, always looking for cross references and associations that reveal subtle correspondences. The proposals made by the artist thus open us new insights into the patterns, structures, irregularities or order that make up the natural world.

I'm questioning myself, I'm questioning people. Why this is happening to me. I'm wondering how I can change it. It's difficult and I can't help somethings. I'm not in control anymore, my mind isn't letting me.

Unfortunately, I need help from others.

Fortunately, I have my boyfriend and friends. Family.

Unfortunately, that's not enough.

Fortunately, I found someone.

I wonder how he's going to help, what he's going to do and what he's going to give me. I'm scared and nervous but I promised to go and I need the creature inside me to leave, now. It's stabbing me in the heart deeper and deeper each day, messing with my emotions.

The thoughts I have most of the time, so very tempting.

But no, I can't.

Appears Paw Paw was casting a questioning eye -- suspicious even -- in my direction. Might well have been thinking, "Mark my words, that guy ain't up to no good!" Or something like that, maybe even with a little salty language thrown in. Can't blame him. I was driving past the courthouse when I spotted his cart and customer, and happened to have my camera handy. I pointed it out the passenger window while passing by slowly. Pretty darn sneaky behavior, I'll admit. But all innocuous, of course. I just wanted to document that we have a broad range of dining / eating options available for the benefit of lawyers, folks on jury duty, courthouse worker bees, etc. Paw Paw's dawgs probably being on the low end, while on the upper end there are places like Commerce Kitchen and Cotton Row. Not bad -- something for everybody.

These two photographers were less than impressed, I saw them after the officer checked their ID, the one in the brown sweater was ranting on the phone about the experience. From my vantage point, they were not harrassed or told to stop, just asked for ID.

This photo is of the main registry room or examination hall on Ellis Island. After the medical inspection immigrants were sent here to await legal questioning. The legal questioning was intended to establish social, moral, and economic fitness. The inspectors asked the immigrants questions about their names, ages, destinations, employment opportunities, and were made to show some money to prove they were not broke. As more and more laws were passed regarding who was and was not allowed to stay in the United States, the questions asked by inspectors became more complex. "Are you an anarchist?" was a common question. Others who were not welcome were the illiterate, diseased, anyone convicted of a crime concerning morals, and anyone who might have the potential to become financially dependent on the governement. The literacy test would weed out the illiterate immigrants, and the inspector would be responsible for deciding how much money was enough to show that they were not going to be dependent on the governement. The prior medical examinations would have already spotted the ones with diseases, so most of the immigrants that made it to the inspector's desk passed all the way onto American soil.
