Seems old Socrates was constantly questioning everyone including the guys in power.........like Pericles. If you would have been a common citizen of Athens at the time; you might have thought he had a loose screw or two much like we do the street preachers of present day. He was tried and convicted but given a way out if he quit the behavior that landed him in trouble. Instead he chose hemlock to make a point I guess. Stuff does nasty things to the body before you find out if you check into the basement or the attic.

stop questioning your talent.

Structural Integrity

Transforming the Arts House Meat Market complex, Structural Integrity is a monumental and melancholic, World’s Fair-styled exhibition and residency project. Exploring independent arts cultures from across Australia and Asia, Structural Integrity includes the work of six Australian and five Asian Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs). The exhibition will be open every day of the Festival, and is Next Wave’s biggest and most ambitious engagement with the Asia-Pacific region in the Festival’s 25-year history. Working on-site at the Meat Market in the month leading up to the Festival, each artist group will create a large-scale structure, or ‘pavilion’, inside this vast historical building. Taking wildly different forms, from faux architectural constructions, to new media laboratories, sound installations, public workshops, and many variations in between, the eleven pavilions will form a snapshot of emerging arts practice in today’s rapidly changing artistic and geo-cultural landscape. Some of the pavilions will house additional artworks, whilst others will simply exist as the artwork itself. Many invite public interaction, welcoming audiences into the lively and chaotic world that each structure represents. The pavilion structure has long been loaded with cultural values and ideals: think of the grand expositions of the 19th Century, or of the Venice Biennale. With this in mind, each pavilion in Structural Integrity will be developed as an expression of the participating ARIs’ artistic principles, in relation to their particular cultural or geographic situation. Playfully questioning the values and ideals that motivated many of these grand international fairs and expositions, Structural Integrity examines national and local cultural identity through the lens of innovative contemporary arts practice, taking in the shared, as well as distinctive, characteristics of grass-roots artistic culture across the region. As both metaphoric and physical structures, the pavilions will be in turns playful, provocative, melancholic, speculative and rhetorical.

The large altarpiece prefigures the Crucifixion by showing the young Jesus and his mother standing behind the felled trunk of a tree. They gaze at us and into the future. Strong, adult features are beginning to emerge on Jesus’ slightly anxious, questioning face. One of Mary’s hands grips her son’s fingers while the other touches the wood that will become his cross.

OK, one could argue that there are already too many self-portraits here on Flickr... But I find that the only person with the patience needed to model for me is myself. Or perhaps I'm not pushy enough!

In any case, this shot is my creative response to the excellent self-portraits by Rekha.

Thinking Dice questions. Obviously using questioning succinctly and in a carefully planned manner helps your teaching. Why they need to be in primary colours and in an illegible font I have not yet learnt.

I think it may be related to the now widely discredited Thinking Hats stuff promulgated by de Bono. Very 2011/12 in tone.

Monday wash day!

Questioning the status of ordinary washing places, Caroline Jacob has shifted the usual location of the laundrette and will transform Mediamatic into a laundrette to present wASH. Preserving the social aspect of the laundrette, Monday Washday Laundrette is an opportunity to gather, try out wASH, as well as tell the stories emerging its creation. As an homage to the heirloom custom and the recipe embodied in the laundry detergent, visitors will be invited to wash their laundry in the space. The laundrette will open its doors every Monday and will be available for free use all day long. Visitors might become performers, clothes gesticulated, machines resonated.

For February's Friday Late, visitors were invited to consider the effects of seeing and being seen, of watching and being watched. Visitors found out how optical illusions can make our eyes deceive us and learned how to escape the ever-watchful surveillance camera. A programme of films challenged the lens through which we see the world and tours charted miniature paintings attempting to capture the window of the soul. Games were played questioning the digital gaze and a new dance commission asked: can there be an ‘I’ without the eye of a beholder?

PEACEKEEPING

For many Canadians, our peacekeeping tradition has become an important part of our national identity. Questioning the role of peacekeeping in our history and national identity is certainly provocative, but do Canada's international contributions during the Cold War merit a deeper look?

Canada did participate in many peacekeeping missions during the Cold War period Lester B. Pearson, a Canadian, is considered by many to be the founding father of peacekeeping. Canadian troops were involved in dozens of missions in Africa, the Midd East, Europe and Asia, earning high praise for their contribution to conflict resolution Canada is often seen, especially by Canadians, as a sort of neutral, honest broker motivated by humanitarian reasons to send troops abroad in the cause of peace.

While humanitarian concern and a desire for peace are important Canadian values, were there other motivations for our actions? Canada was a committed member of NATO and did not want Communist influence to spread. Did the Cold War influence our peacekeeping activity? A case in point is Cyprus. Canadian troops served on the Mediterranean island for decades reducing conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots Greece and Turkey were important NATO allies, and the fighting in Cyprus was straining relations between them. Conflict in Cyprus therefore risked weakening NATO and exposing an unstable Cyprus to Soviet influence. Do you think NATO's goals factored into the peacekeeping strategy?

Canadian peacekeeping missions were among the most high-profile activities of our military during much of the Cold War. Media paid a lot of attention to our troops serving in remote locations or in world "hot-spots" like Egypt, Pakistan or the Congo. After Korea, Canadian forces weren't involved in sustained combat operations-we even refused to send combat troops to Vietnam. To many, it seemed peacekeeping was our primary objective.

Was another story unfolding for Canada's military as well? Peacekeeping involved a small part of our military personnel and resources. Where did the rest go? The majority of Canada's military effort was dedicated to training for a war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The Navy developed anti-submarine techniques designed specifically to combat Soviet submarines. The Air Force prepared to intercept Soviet bombers over North America and to attack Soviet troop concentrations in Europe with nuclear weapons. How should we weigh our NATO training in our history?

What do you think about Canada's peacekeeping tradition during the Cold War?

This elderly man was sitting on one of the pedestran bridges in Nazimabad.

After watching Exit Through The Gift Shop I came out of that experience questioning what is design? What is art? What is right? What is wrong? Are there rules? What makes a great artist? What makes a great piece of art? What makes a bad piece of art? Is the technique important? Is the idea important? What makes a bad artist? When is something finished? When is something unfinished?

The piece above is literally a line drawing of a scan of a photo of Mr. Oizo. I was actually going to do something else with this piece but then I start asking myself if it looked good as it is? What about it made me like it the way it is? If I where to put this on to a t shirt? Would it sell? What if I was to use this for street art?

The thing is when it comes to it... I have no idea. Maybe I should experiment with this image alone? Maybe I should do as many things with this as I can? Or could I be reading too much into this whole thing?

You know... one thing I have learned in my walk of faith is... when the Lord directs you to do something, obey, without analyzing, doubting, questioning, giving conflicting advice to yourself, etc... I mean, if you KNOW that you KNOW that you KNOW what you are to do, do it with all your heart- even if the world will think you are crazy.

I do it often, my husband just mentioned this observation yesterday as I relayed to him what I was up to. I want to be so sensitive to God's voice that I do and know that I have to do it and go- point blank. I have asked the God to help me have a childlike faith, and I think this is one area He has often challenged me to do just that. Trust and faith.

So, a year ago I had a feeling to do something. I did ask God, "um, is that Your voice, or me just imagining it?" I asked for confirmation for the task I felt that I needed to accomplish. Not for doubt, but to secure the purpose in my brain. He knows me, and He knows that I do not want to do something in His name that is not of Him; and I sure hate messing up. So... He gave me confirmation.

What was it, you may be asking? What was it that He put on my heart about a year ago, that I am JUST getting to? sigh...

I have two actors on my heart. Yup. I have been praying and interceding for them. One is an old classic movie actress, and the other is a young comedic sort. Either way, they have become a constant, pressing topic of prayer for me. And, I felt almost a year ago to make a card for the elderly actress and send it to her. Hm.

Now, yes, you may think I am crazy, but... I would remind you, what am I really losing by trying? I could effect positive change for Jesus by simply obeying His voice. I don't know the lives of others. I do not know what my simple act can accomplish. I DO know that I will receive "WHY would you do that?" in very dubious and critical tones. Already have (from someone other than my husband, just to be clear). But, I WILL obey my Jesus. I will practice obedience in the small things, so I can be faithful to obey in the big.

So, here it is. Almost a year later after asking God to give me inspiration for a card, as... if the desire came from Him, I sure wanted the whole subject to continue under Him and not be directed by my hand. This is HIS deal. I am just an instrument. The other day, the idea just flowed from my hands, and when it was complete, I knew it is for her.

I Googled the lead I had to an address for her. As you must know that lots of lies are spread on the internet, and I wanted to be careful to have what I thought would be the REAL thing. So...I believe I have found the address, and just sent it out this morning.

May God heal her heart from sin's ravaging and pain. May He save her heart and bring her rest in His presence. May He do so also with you, dear one.

I hope you will pray for ANYONE that God puts on your heart. You just never know how He will use those very words from your heart. He knows who needs someone to intercede. He knows the details, I am just an itty-bitty part of His grand plan. Help me pray for this card to reach her and touch her heart. Won't you?

Blessings...
