rp @drcourtneyrose: Quick question: Where has NOT talking about it gotten us? The kids are watching, listening, looking to us for guidance. When children’s worries, fears & questions are ignored, glossed over or discouraged, all it does is stoke more worries, fears & questions. Not to mention the unaddressed concerns of parents, social justice-oriented and anti-racist educators, and so many other key community members and key stakeholders. This shit runs deep. There is no more time for lack of action. Create spaces fo dialogue. Create spaces for developing action toward change. rut;t;J Neo liberal Assaults on Education: How REAL are SFI's Claimed "Co~cerns~: .
.
Given the nee-liberal assault on education in India, it is indeed the need of the hour that the educatiOnal pollctes being drafted and implemented in the country be debated and questioned . However, there are certain concerns and questions that we hope are raised and not left unaddressed in SFI's 'All India Convention on Education'. .
On Right to Education Bill .
I I .
SFI's pamphlet dated 18.2.2010 announcing the convention states: "The Right to Education act was implemented in the Parliament without making any .financial commitments on the part ofthe union goven1ment. This would mean lhat the desired objectives ofthe bill would be extremely difficult to realise". .
Well, this 'concern' of SFI is not only too little but too late! .
.
Let us point out that when this much advertised bill was put to vote in the Lok Sabha, only 54 members were present (in a house of 545) and despite the presenc( of a few CPI {M) members in the house, the biJI was unanimously passed by a' oice vote. In the Rajya Sabha, it was only D. Raja from CPI who raised some concerns about the "paucity of funding"; however, he too voted for the bill in its present form. .
.
.
SFI has been CONSPICUOUSLY SILENT all through on the dane;erous provisions of RTE which would make existing government schools hopelessly dependent on private funding and make mockery of any genuine possibility ofuniversal access to quality school education for poor people in this country. A sustained campaign by several educationists and student groups highlighting these issues is still on. But SFJ was never seen in any of these struggles. What however was visible was tbe enthusiastic and self congratulatory campaign by a large section of CPI (M) intellectuals to sell this UPA sponsored RTE bill in its present form. .
.
.
As it proceeds with the'All India Convention on Education', which claims to 'oppose' commercialisation, SFI must .
clarify its stance vis-a-vis the glaring dangers embedded in the UPA sponsored RTE Act. .
In 1993, in its landmark Unnikrishnan judgement, the Supreme Cour~ cited Article 45 of the Constitution and declared that from birth until the age of 14, children were entitled to free and compulsory education and this was accorded the status ofa basic· .:_,nt In order to esor students for "free education" in private schools. But how does the Act propose to ensure that ev~n this P~ltry and inadequate quota will be filled? The 25% quota regulation is violated routinely in Delhi .
where It has bee-in force for some time now. .
.
T~e much-touteo~ducation fee 'vouchers' to ostensibly 'enable' poor students to study in private schools ~II however only mount to the average amount spent on a child in a government school! Do Mr. Kapil Sibal and the MHRL believe that there is any comparison whatsoever between the expenditure o'n a child in government schools aJ<r\ the enormous price demanded by private schools? Apart from the admission fees, will the vo.ucher cover the costs1f''picnic fees", "exam fees" and several other such costs such as uniforms and shoes that pnvate s.chools regularl)demand? Also, the RTE Act does not spell out if vouchers will be given to all of the 19 crore children of schoolg ;ng age who are in need of education. .
.
.
Fu~~er. the UPA:'s .RT~ bi~. instead of pushing for a more equitable 'conPnon-school' system, has sought to legntml.ze the exJstmg mfrasl·u~tural gaps between the pr;vate and public schools and advocates virtual takeover of exJ~tmg government schoo\ by private education mafias under the garb of PPP. .
.
.
Why di~ even the CPI(M) MPs ~pport and allow the RTE to be pas~ed with these loopholes that seriously .
undermmeaoy actual possibility t~ ensure a universal, quality, afford~ble education for all? .

My next steps are to work on my bio to give an overview of who I am, and what is important to me, agriculture and education/outreach being especially important. I am unsure if I include religious beliefs though and if Facebook is the place to put this. Being a Christian is a large aspect of my life and holds a high priority. If I include it and the administrator is not Christian as well it may hurt my hiring likelihood. All great things to consider with no clear-cut answer! Along with this, I made an effort to clear out the movies, books, and miscellaneous pages that I “liked” as 7th grader.

The question I am researching is “How do people perceive different smiles?” This is a photo I came up with through my internet research. It really expresses the sort of thing I’m trying to get at. These different sets of teeth apparently mean different things to the person who posted it. I seriously do not see a difference in them. They are just teeth, and very similar looking ones for that matter, yet apparently they portray “aggressiveness” or “youthfulness”? The website I pulled it from was this one: www.cosmetic-dentistry-and-porcelain-veneers.com/2012/02/...
He’s a cosmetic dentist, so I suppose he’d want to get people thinking that the way their teeth look express different things but I’m interested in why people would believe that or if it is true, what makes it that way?
