The Chief Executive's Question and Answer Session (2021.02.04)

On May 24th, 2011 at 6pm, TEDxPhoenix held its first TEDxPhoenixSalon event in Downtown Phoenix at ASU's PURL Room.

The TEDxPhoenixSalon series is an intimate and casual meet-up aimed to spark creative engagement amongst the local Phoenix-Metro community. It's a gathering of curious minds, and a place to explore new ideas and ways of thinking.

For the May 24th TEDxPhoenixSalon, we featuring TEDTalks by Salman Khan, Dave Eggers and John Hunter as we set out to answer the following question: "Is the education revolution closer than we think?"

For more details about the event, please visit our event page on TED.com at: www.ted.com/tedx/events/2834

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxPhoenix, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxPhoenix event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

A question that often pops up in conversation with various people is, "how do you stay so grounded with everything that's happened to you?"

Well. This should pretty much sum it up. This kind of thing happens to me ALL the time, so even if I took the opportunity, every ONCE in a while to feel grand, the universe pretty much slaps me right back down - so it all evens out.

I'm singing in a truly lovely theater right now - a theater where they know me - I've performed here twice before to pretty decent acclaim. And yet, apparently they know me as "Joyde".

That's cool. I'm grateful all the same for the chance to smile a little bit!

Question Mark Butterfly, This rather plain looking butterfly is a lifer for me.

This is the light phase of the Question Mark, so the signature Question Mark in the back wing, from which it gets its name and is so visible in the dark phase is very difficult to see. Question marks are a moderately common woodland butterfly.

They are definitely the most difficult butterflies to photograph that I have ever encountered, Firstly they do not feed on nectar so they do not visit flowers, secondly they live on the edge of woods and will retreat ligh into the trees if disturbed, thirdly they are extremely skittish - and generally will not let a person get closer than ten or twently feet. Lastly they only sit for a few seconds before they flit away. So although I have seen Question Marks on several occasions, I have never even come close to getting a shot until this.- next time I get the spectacular black orange and violet upper wing.

Question Marks are a member of the Comma family of forest butterflies.

The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is a medieval palace and former residence of the first Dukes of Braganza, located in the historical centre of Guimarães, Portugal.

It was initiated between 1420 and 1422 by Afonso, Count of Barcelos, the illegitimate son of John I of Portugal, and future Duke of Bragança in a Burgundy architectural style, reflecting the taste acquired during his travel through Europe.

His descendants occupied the palace until the Dukes of Braganza moved to Vila Viçosa, abandoning the palace and the 16th Century marked the beginning of a period of ruin. During the 19th century the degradation worsened, when the local population used the palace as a quarry.

During the Estado Novo regime (1926 to 1974), a controversial restoration influenced by nationalist values and based on observation of similar palaces contemporary of this one in several European countries recovered the Palace, implying a grandeur that may not have existed. In this epoch it was used as one of the official residences for the President of the Republic.

Today, part of the building is used as a museum where beautiful Persian and Flemish tapestries can be seen as well as paintings and other historical objects.

“Illiam Dhone: A Manx Historical Drama which won the Chruinnaght Gold Medal, 1924”

by J. J. Keen

Published by Yn Chruinnaght Vanninagh Ashoonagh, as “Publication No. 1”, in 1926

Printed by S. K. Broadgate & Co. Ltd., Douglas

A seven-scene play on the life, death and aftermath of William Christian (“Illiam Dhone”).The play is a masterful handling of the contentious question of the traitor/nationalist status of Illiam Dhone in handing the island over to the Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War. Kneen manages to leave the question still open in the play, despite making Dhone a very strong and heroic character.

That J. J. Kneen (1873 - 1938) was perhaps the leading Manx linguist as well as scholar and nationalist of his day would not come as a surprise after reading this play. He had a great many articles and translations to him name, although his most famous work is probably the translation the Manx National Anthem into Manx.

Kneen was a keen playwright also, writing many plays on Manx topics and themes. This play of ‘Illiam Dhone’ is a curious instance in that Kneen deals with Dhone and the complex issues surrounding him masterfully while giving the play a very strange format - effectively splitting it into three parts:

(1) the Manx “rebellion” (in which Dhone does not appear throughout the first scene, when the Derby Monarchist rule is overthrown),

(2) the arrest, trial and execution of Dhone, eleven years later,

(3) the story of Dhone son’s overcoming a rival to marry the daughter of one of Dhone’s accusers.

It should be clear what a daring opening act it is to leap straight into the rebellion, but also what a curious final act Kneen gives the play. It almost feels as if the play would be better titled, ‘Illiam Dhone and the Curse of the Clan Christian’.

Some of the characterisation is wonderful, particularly the interplay of Lady Molineux and Bishop Rutter in Scene I, where Rutter’s almost camp reactions to her outspoken attacks of the Roundheads is brilliant when set against the raucous songs that are left to us by the historical Samuel Rutter (Bishop 1660-1662/3). But this is nothing to the brilliant handling of Dhone himself, who is heroic, clearly drawn and yet vague at the same time. This is perhaps shown in one of the key lines in the play when Dhone is refusing to try to escape from the troops out to arrest him:

Christian:

Were it a crime to be a patriot, then am I a criminal indeed. I ever placed my country before aught else.

[...]

‘Twould be as well for a mouse to struggle against a lion, as for our puny little Isle to attempt to dictate to the armed forces if the English State.

Trinity Site

Johnnie Boy Test, Nevada Test Site

One question leads to another

Hermes wondered if fused material like trinitite had been created during the Soviet Union's first nuclear test, Joe-1, in 1949.

It had. The sample Hermes obtained from the site of that test differed externally from trinitite, but he expected its radiological signature to be the same. The Joe-1 device was an exact duplicate of the Trinity Site device.

Yet gamma-ray spectroscopy showed radiological differences between the fused soil from the original American and Soviet test sites. Why?

Mystery solved

Upon inquiry, Hermes learned that the Soviets' original Ground Zero had been used a second time. The sample of fused material was a mixture of soil that had been remelted and remixed with debris from the second test.

The story doesn't end here

In science, the questions never end. Understanding how trinitite was formed is only a step towards understanding what went on inside the radioactive cloud created during the Trinity test. Many more questions remain to be answered. That's the challenge of science!
