I have to sell some photos at my church fall fair, and I have a question for which I would appreciate any and all feedback:

I'm going to print 5"x7" photos and put them in mats. the question is: For a church fair where I don't think people are going to be willing to spend lots of money, should I just have them machine printed and keep the price at $10 each, or should I get them printed at $7 each, and then charge $15 each?

what do you think???????

There is place for soft colour. There is place for strong and vibrant colours. And autumn is always the season you can find them.

This is just a repost for autumn colour in my neighbourhood.

Happy Monday and a great week!

I ask the experienced landscape photographer about tips in shooing fall colour.

He said the answer is in your question itself. Shooting fall colours means really shooting the colours.

I had a walk in my neighborhood and I took his suggestion shooting the colours. I am not sure if I did follow his advice.

This was seen on the sidewalk of a small street in my neighborhood.

Happy Wednesday!

There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I!

To Bee, or not to Bee, that is the question.

Answers for the big questions

This one is a lot different from the images I usually post-- and not as polished. Yet, for some reason I couldn't resist sharing it.

So after many wishes to make a q&a here it is. You can ask everything I will answer.

"any questions?" Defender of the Realm. if you've ever met a mockingbird, you know what this is about. he's "da man"... ;)

lots of folks don't appreciate this fine feathered fellow, even folks that call themselves birders and claim to luv the members of Class Aves. these guys are birds that everyone needs to cultivate an appreciation for, 'cuz they're among a small handful of bird species that can adapt and survive in stupid human landscapes. their tenacious defense of their hime turf is admirable at the very least. they're just being mockingbirds, and they're pretty damn good at it. ;)

Huh, 30/52 was hard - spent several days in Moravia which was pretty exhausting (a lot of celebrating etc ;-)) and all of sudden I realized it was Sunday and I forgot about 52 weeks....Then my french fries were ready and idea appeared ;-)

And tomorrow work, gosh I want to be back in the USA - a carefree and fabulous time I had there ;-)

I have a few questions in general :)

So if you couldn't tell by my stream, I don't do many self portraits. And I really don't know why either. I guess it's just easier to take pictures of stationary objects?! But I want to challenge myself, so would you agree that I should explore self portraits more, or disagree?

Also, Prints. Print exchange? Print giveaway? What do you guys think? Should I make something happen, or just leave it?

I'm not very good at decision making, it takes me 30 mins, to decide what I'm having for breakfast! So really any opinions, or answers would be much appreciated :)

Humanity is extinct. Bands of nomadic robots roam the wastelands of Earth, astride their dinosaur steeds. Dinosaurs have returned, because they are awesome, don't question it.

How fascinating that during our lives there are moments in time that have the ability to go down in history.⏰📘

One such moment came at 17:42 on Friday the 3rd of July 2020, where were you at this momentous time, just in case anyone was out in the scullery jumping up and down on a bunch of grapes in order to make your next bottle of wine, let me pass on to you the following reportage, you cannot make it up.😜

The place was Downing Street, the subject matter, questions to the PM who had addressed the nation, what happens, yep this question is put to BoJo, “Prime Minister, should we drink a yard of ale to celebrate pubs reopening” well the cheers, whooping, trumpets being blown, beating of drums, singing, that rang out around this village, was just sheer joy. The village church bells rang to the tune of ‘Roll Out The Barrel’, Horace bounced up and down on his Olympic size trampoline, purely incredible scenes.

The noise was picked up at The Goonhilly Earth Station.🍻🎺🎶📡

The internet and phone lines in the village, all went into meltdown, morse code, tambourines anything that could be classed as a method of communication were put to use. Nancy Nancarrow, yes the lady that does glass blowing on the side, immediately swung into action producing yard of ale glasses by the thousand in her garden shed.☎️🏡🍸🍹

A crack team of ladies from the WI armed to the teeth with welding and fabrication qualifications assembled outside the church hall.

Their immediate task was to reacquisition the bus that is used for the Sunday school outings and prepare it for an exhibition pub crawl through Cornwall.🚌

They would cut the roof off the bus with Oxy-Acetylene torches and turn it into a cabriolet, these measures were required in order to follow guidelines that it is safer for large groups to be in the open air.

Next step was to expertly cut out the double seats and weld in a job lot of chairs from the church hall at two meter spacings.

Bus conversion complete, these ladies were good to go.🔥🔥

Trixie Trebillcock and Betty Beswetherick, had been in a bubble or on a bender some miles away in Wadebridge when they heard the cheer from the village go up, they immediately phoned back to the village to ask Nancy what was going on, once informed they asked, could they be picked up from Wadebridge next day on route for the pub crawl to celebrate this momentous moment in time.👯‍♀️🎉🎊

Mrs Trebogus said she would drive the bus for the pub crawl.

With representatives from many of the organisations in the village sat in the single seats of the bus cabriolet and every member armed with a yard of ale glass they set off from the village via Wadebridge, duly collected Trixie and Betty, then headed off through Cornwall, stopping off at numerous hostelries testing their yard glasses before one final stop in Penzance.🍺🍺🍺🍺🍷🍺🍷🍺🍷🍺🍺🍷🍺🍷🍺🍷

Following the consumption of about twenty yards of ale each in Penzance alone, some of the ladies were a bit worse for wear, some even went missing.🙈😜

As it was getting dark Mrs Trebogus had to get back to the farm in order to milk her Friesian cows. Therefore she took the decision to round up the ladies she could find and transport them back to the village. (I bet you have all been out on a day like this if you are honest)🐄🐮🐄🐮🐄🐮

When Trixie and Betty staggered back to the RV point, they could not believe they had missed the bus, Trixie said “we will have to walk home”, Betty responded, we can’t do that, we are not fit to walk, we will have to drive. 😱😱

Trixie said “but we don’t have a car”, Betty responded don’t worry we will borrow one, Trixie said “don’t be stupid, there won’t be a car around here that is taxed, so forget that, how about we borrow a bus from Penzance bus station”, brilliant idea responded Betty.🚗🚌

So Betty stood guard outside the large bus station while Trixie went into borrow a bus, well after about half an hour of engine revving, clattering and banging, Betty shouts in “what on earth are you doing”, Trixie responds, I’m doing my best but the bus for Wadebridge is parked at the back.🚌

Betty shouts, “take the one for St Columb, we can walk from there”.🚌🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️

Thank you so much for viewing my photos, the banter and comments you leave are so appreciated.

Take care, have a lovely weekend

I wanted to mod my Brickmania Easy Eight, I am wondering if this new cupola looks good. What are your guys' thoughts? Also, expect some new uploads mid-May....

The last nearly four years have seemed like eons for me. Every day that I can bear to pay attention, I am horrified by what atrocities Trump is responsible for. I have gone to so many protests in so many places for so many causes/reasons, both well attended and scarcely attended in good weather and in the middle of a freezing cold winter. There are times I have really questioned what good it even does but a little voice in my head has still told me it was the right thing to do.

But, then the Coronavirus hit and I wondered seriously if protesting was the right thing to do…after reading the statistics in my own city about people of color being killed by the Coronavirus at a much higher rate than white people, I had to ask myself, is it actually a case of white privilege if I protest? This seems like such a strange thing to ask when you are protesting your outrage about a man being killed only because he happened to be Black and existing in America but still I had to ask. Because, if I am part of the problem of spreading this virus and my presence results in more deaths of more people of color, isn’t that defeating the purpose? In addition, how about all of the healthcare workers who have been burdened for so long? Why should I make a choice for them that could affect the survival and treatment of myself and others? It just seemed too risky for this die hard protestor.

I have never dealt with this kind of moral dilemma before. My sense of right and wrong is usually pretty strong and doesn’t leave room for tons of contemplation and deliberation. I can’t really remember the last time I had to seriously ponder “What is the right thing to do in this situation?” asking myself again and again. I usually just know these things intuitively and then try to make my best ethical choice. I’m not saying that I don’t see layers of grey between black and white so much as just I have an idea of how to act in terms of what is right with my soul. I’m also not saying that I don’t learn new things and from the perspective of others and change based on being open to learning. But, the idea of what is fundamentally the ethical choice to make about whether or not to attend a protest for a cause I believe in has never been this difficult before.

And, there is the other side of things that I don’t really like to talk about-the more human side of things. I am unfortunately all too human in my fears about contacting Coronavirus/Covid19. To be honest, I’m the type of person that gets nervous taking a walk in my own neighborhood and gets frustrated when I see the joggers and dog walkers on my street roaming without a mask or groups of a few friends partying on a rooftop in close proximity. It seems pretty hypocritical to me that I’d also be finding myself amidst thousands of people in super close proximity sometimes under overpasses neck to neck, masks or no.

So, what I am saying is that I am actually probably a little paranoid. For a large part of my life, I didn’t realize I was any different from others in my fears until I went to college and learned about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and realized that my irrational fear of death that took hold of me if I didn’t do certain things when I was little-tap my fingers every time I saw a green car, squeeze my toes every time I passed a squirrel-that sort of thing-wasn’t what most kids go through. And, it was crippling. Most of the time, I would cry hysterically thinking I was going to die and great harm would really come to my family and I if I told anyone and voiced these fears out loud. I know, I know…it sounds crazy and doesn’t make tons of sense. And, even though I know that and have gotten better dealing with this side of my self as an adult, it still hasn’t gone away completely. There’s a real instinctual fear that makes me think the worst will happen to me.

The news, of course, doesn’t help…and consider that non essential businesses were shuttered and school was cancelled for the rest of the year, I am even more terrified about the damage this virus can do. Then, there’s also the choir study…where they found that one man in close proximity singing with a choir infected pretty much the whole choir and killed a few too. Of course, this is outdoors, but I still can’t help thinking about all of the times I opened my mouth to chant pro Black Life Matters sentiments even if I was wearing a mask.

And, in many ways, I feel like I am not even worthy enough to say the name of George Floyd or Breonna Taylor who should have turned 27 on Friday, the day that I joined these protests. Because, as someone who is white, I could never know the true horror of this. She was a hero, an EMT worker, and it wasn’t just her own life and her family that was robbed but all of our lives and the sadness is overpowering. So, I ended up saying her name a few thousand times and feeling like I was losing my mind because I couldn’t rewind time and change reality.

I don’t know the answer to all of this and I still don’t know if I contracted the virus or not. But, in any case, I hope that these protests meant something and continue to mean something. Maybe it actually means more to those in power that people would risk their lives to fight for Black Lives and, if those mayors and governors really care about the citizens of their city, they have to act on these social justice issues-hold police accountable, take police out of schools and bring in social workers, counselors, librarians, art and music creative outlets instead. Let’s have a dance class or a drama class instead of kids being subjected to cruel excessive force and mock prison cells from early ages. Surely anything that helps kids is better than something doing active harm. Let’s put more money into mental health facilities instead of incarcerations. Let’s make sure when someone is released from prison that they have a job to go to. Let’s make sure our citizens have healthcare and that there are valid low income housing measures. All of these things will reduce crime and improve the quality of life. That is the direction we need to think in instead of increasing a police force. We need to think about the disparities between communities and races and ensure these people are protected and treated with respect-the same respect and treatment white people have been taking for granted in my country for centuries.

This is the caterpillar of the Question Mark butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis). There is a tiny mark on the underside of the butterfly's wing that gives it the unusual name. I photographed this spiky creature at the Butterfly Haven in Pingree, Idaho.

What I know about lightning:

“Is a powerful natural electrostatic discharge produced during a thunderstorm. This abrupt electric discharge is accompanied by the emission of visible light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. The electric current passing through the discharge channels rapidly heats and expands the air into plasma producing acoustic shock waves (thunder) in the atmosphere” (Wikipedia dixit).

It’s a very spectacular phenomenon, specially at night.

It’s not easy to get a good capture if you don’t know how to do it. It’s pure chance.

It’s pure chance that your building gets struck by lightning.

So, I got this capture and three weeks later my building was struck by lightning.

I said goodbye to my monitor, printer, TV and toaster. CPU, Hi-Fi and microwaves survived (by chance).

Corollary: lightning and chance are two sides of the same coin.

Dress by Question couture - Photography and design by santidesign

This is a question I pose for those of you who use AI to create images.

I realize there is skill involved in being able to nearly perfectly imitate cameras, but is that the goal of AI? Photography already does "camera" really well. We could imitate painters from the past, but is that the goal either? Likewise brushes and paint already do a great job at making paintings.

As we continue to work in the new medium we will find what the medium's identity is. I don't know what that is--yet. It will reveal itself over time. One thing I believe is that it will be unique and not just an imitation of older media.

20201012_5773_7D2-280 Welcome Swallow (286/366)

Hirundo neoxena

On my Travis Wetland circuit this morning I came across three other birders including Oscar Thomas, the 20 year old author of "Naturalist’s Guide to the Birds of New Zealand". After chatting to the three for about ten minutes (many questions from them: have you seen the Glossy Ibis? have you see the Cape Barren Geese? etc) I headed into the bird hide. There didn't appear to be as many birds on the pond as previous mornings recently, but I did have this Welcome Swallow preening on a flax stalk just a couple of metres away. But then, they are used to humans with at least five swallow nests built in the hide itself.

Lá do alto, o outro questiona-o:

- À sim e então, é dos "peitos"?..

- Não compadre, é das unhas dos pés!!!

Question-mark_2539

As we approached the outer limits of the Chicago Terminal, near Gary, trains were beginning to pile up. This is actually quite normal, but there was chatter on the radio hinting to a train ahead experiencing trouble.

The railroads changed to narrow band radio communication a few years back. This system makes it extremely difficult to hear a locomotive radio from more than ten miles away. If a portable radio is being used, then the limit seems to be around three miles.

While the dispatcher flushed out the normal rush of evening eastbound intermodals, those of us on westbounds suffered a very slow roll into town. Every mile of progress, though, made it a tad easier to catch bits and pieces of the conversation ahead.

Just prior to leaving the mainline and changing over to the yard radio channel, I learned that the train in question was Amtrak's Capitol Limited. It was stopped east of the detector a mile or so south of the White Sox stadium.

On the following day, we departed Englewood and began our journey to Toledo. The progression of signals ahead meant a stop at the Calumet River bridge for a lake freighter to pass through.

Once stopped at the signal, I opened the door and was surprised to find sparkling Charger 361 tied down on a yard lead. With no apparent fuel, oil, or water leaks, I assumed she had an issue somewhere within.

After kicking over a few stones, I learned that the Capitol tripped the detector at MP518 for a wheel defect. The culprit? Non other than the brand new 361! So new that the wheel sets were still shiny. Not a speck of dirt or dust to be found.

The crew was instructed to limp the unit down to CP 509 where it could be set out. The defect was rumored to be an issue with one of the axles.

Lucky for the passengers on #30, the 361 was not sole power for the train. She was trailing a Genesis unit. After a hefty delay, the train continued east.

This is not the first time that I had seen or heard of a Charger no longer being able to charge ahead. It sounds like the model's reliability percentage is more favorable now than when first delivered. Good news as Amtrak has enough troubles!

Charged Out.

Rain and colder temps have kept me from chasing butterflies until this weekend. Allhart and I visited Strawberry Plains Audubon Center where several species of butterflies, moths, bees and other insects were active. It was great weather and an enjoyable morning to shoot.

My entry for the LUGNuts "Fire and Ice" challenge. A rescue truck used predominantly in the winter for ice rescue missions, but the tracks can be replace with wheels to become the station's swift water rescue. Now the question is whether or not to make a base for it...

She is still skeptical after her first lesson.

Question to all of you: why does my EXIF information show sometimes, and other times it does not. I use Lightroom Classic for all my editing and the data shows there. Does anyone else have this problem?

The question remains as to whether a second corndog-wielding assailant was present on the grassy knoll...
