Pyrography on wood

“The changes that have affected the local communities have influenced my most passionate and notable work. I use my art to express my frustrations. I have focused my work on Gentrification, Institutional Racism, Abuse of Immigrants,

and the loss of humanity that has affected the country in the recent years.” —Azucena Hernandez

Each of the works in The Ember Series depicts a portrait of a person of color killed by police or while in police captivity. Ranging in ages from twelve to fifty years old, each subject is presented on its own piece of wood. Hernandez’s use of wood as the medium for these portraits is at once sad and reverential. The visible tree rings poignantly evoke years lost.

At the same time, each portrait, framed by the dark tree bark, is etched—by burning—into the wood, suggesting scaring, healing, and permanence.

Pyrography is a technique of wood-burning that involves using a heated metal tip to create images in wood. The term is derived from the Greek words pur and graphos, translating to writing with fire.

Azucena Hernandez lives in Sacramento. She received her BA from San Francisco State University.

This is my home brew Lichtenberg Pyrography Machine.

The first thing I MUST say is that this is a very dangerous device. The voltages used in this device can KILL!!! I am not being over dramatic. This device is bloody DANGEROUS. I do not recommend that you make one.

OK, now that I've mentioned the necessary serious stuff, let's have a look at the device itself.

It's basically made up of a few basic parts.

First there is a microwave oven transformer which converts 240 volts AC to about 2,400 volts AC. That's the bit that can KILL.

The secondary high tension winding of the transformer is then attached to a couple of leads, which are in turn connected to some electrodes. The electrodes are the things that allow the machine to do its pyrographic magic.

A couple of enhancements - I'm running the unit through a VARIAC type device which allows me to control the burn effect.

Also, I've attached a couple of visual warning devices to tell me that the thing is on. A light which is connected to the primary winding. And a meter which is connected to the low voltage secondary via a bridge rectifier and resister. Using both of these is a type of redundancy system. But, if ever I need to touch the leads or the electrodes, I do unplug the unit first (not just turn off - UNPLUG!)

The fuse in the VARIAC is running at 3 amps while the fuse in the Lichtenberg Machine is 2amps. Hoping that the Lichtenberg Machine fuse blows before the VARIAC one does - which is generally what happens.

Lastly, I've put the thing in a box to keep the nasty electrical stuff that can kill away from me. You might also notice that the transformer body itself is also pretty well insulated. That's because it is also live!

The clear cover on the box is to let me see if there is any arcing or shorting happening.

The cables are nice thick high amperage ones - don't really need them on this device (as it is running a fairly low current) but they do look impressive! It also reminds me that there are nasty electrons in there waiting to jump out and attack any unsuspecting human that's silly enough to play with it.

Dave has crafted this beautiful lap support spinning bowl from tiger maple, and has adorned it with his signature pyrographed leaf motif. The ceramic bowl measures 1 3/4 inches in diameter, and the tiger maple base is approximately 2 3/4 inches in diameter and 6 1/4 inches in length. A burnt orange glaze was used on the earthenware clay inner bowl.
