One exposure, lots of flashes.

Held the flash in my hand and fired it during the 20 second exposure using the test button. I walked around the camera to flash from different angles. It was mostly an experimental shot, but I liked the way it turned out.

Myanmar. Mandalay.

Myanmar puppets, or Yoke thé, are a traditional form of Burmese marionette theatre that uses intricately carved wooden puppets controlled by a single puppeteer with many strings. The art form dates back to the late 18th century, with performances that can last all night and feature elaborate storylines from epics like the Ramayana and mythological tales. Today, they are both a popular form of entertainment and a common souvenir.

These puppet suits were made for the Umo Ensemble by the great Andy Kim. I made the little puppet heads which you can barely see in this picture, but actually they are very nice portraits of David and Esther. -adam

Kit spent some quiet time playing puppets today. (I was inspired by Lucy Loves?'s fabulous puppet show photo to get out some puppets for Kit to try).

Statistics show that over 85% of personal puppets are lying seemingly lifeless in drawers all across Canada. These statistics have just been published as part of an alarming report put forward by our government.

For years, people just like you, have assumed that their lifeless state was benign, but not so. The continued use of alcohol and common street drugs have left our interesting friends virtually comotose...but not lifeless!

Case in point...

I've set up a surveillance system in my wardrobe and have lived to witness the unthinkable. What did the cameras reveal? My ex-boyfriend puppet had been to Vegas, and let me tell you, what went to Vegas did not stay in Vegas. I am sure that this debauchary had been going on for longer than even I could imagine.

Lifeless? Pachaw!

I could almost handle the sober puppet tucked away in my bedroom, but it sickens me to think that I have been watched by a drunken ex puppet. For how long? Who knows.

I urge all who read this who have ex puppets to please, please, move them into another room in your house less invasive; perhaps an attic, or where you keep your poisons stored under the kitchen sink.

Sexual harassment by puppets is no laughing matter.

When we were kids, Phoebe and I liked to put on puppet shows (I mean, c'mon, who DOESN'T). Dad constructed a small theater out of a refridgerator box and colored poster board.

“I was watching a soap opera and all of a sudden an earthquake took place,” says Natcharin, a 13-year old girl who lives in Chiang Saen, northern Thailand. “My mum and I hid under the table and bed. If there is a disaster, people in our community will be in trouble."

Natcharin recently attended a 2-day workshop with 29 other children from 4 villages to create characters and stories to use for a shadow puppet show all about disasters.

“In our story, we want to talk about how it isn’t good to ignore flood warnings. I’ll use my knowledge to perform for adults and children so that they know how dangerous disasters can be”.

Shadow puppetry is an effective way for vulnerable children and communities to learn about disaster risk reduction using easy, fun and engaging media. In partnership with Plan Thailand, the organisation Wondering Moon uses shadow theatre to tell stories of disasters.
