Hanoi is not for moments of contemplation. It is fast, it is frenetic, it is it is filled with noise and people and smog and sidewalks bursting with energy and life. Even the puppet show is just this side of crazy. So to catch this moment of stillness is, I must say, unique.
I went to see puppets being made for Shadow puppet theatre.
Wayang Kulit is a unique form of theatre employing light and shadow. The puppets are crafted from buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks. When held up behind a piece of white cloth, with an electric bulb or an oil lamp as the light source, shadows are cast on the screen.
Wayang Kulit plays are invariably based on romantic tales, especially adaptations of the classic Indian epics, "The Mahabarata" and "The Ramayana". Some of the plays are also based on local happenings (current issues) or other local secular stories. It is up to the conductor or "Tok Dalang" to decide his direction.

As Chinatown was really crowded after the light up, we walked through inside passageways....and stumbled upon a puppet show, complete with live music....
Tinkering with eye placement. The eyes are made by filling a table spoon with Crayola Model magic. They're then sanded down with sandpaper and a dremmel to get a smooth finish, and are painted. Ultra light so they don't pull on the fabric!

Another photo from the mall. I'm not really a fan of clowns, but I thought this lil' guy looked cute! ^_^ I really almost never think that of clowns. He was on display in a glass case to advertise for a puppet shop in the Galleria. They do birthday parties for kids there and stuff.
I had really intended for Dec. to be all Christmas-themed photos like I did last time, like an advent calendar of sorts, but I really liked this puppet and it was an opportunity to get a photo of something different that I don't own. A toy in the wild, so to speak. LOL!
Anyway, he does have the Galleria's Christmas tree behind him so that counts, right? Kinda-sorta?
