Mrs C-13 collects Pelham Puppets.We've probably got about 100 of them around the house and it's taken me this long to realise that they'd make a great subject to photograph!

Clay sculpt of my puppet head, inspired by fantasy art such as The Dark Crystal and developed from my CG sculpt (scale drawing I was working from shown in the background). Changes include larger exaggerated wrinkles, larger (friendlier) eyes and a larger more expressive mouth. This will be moulded in a three-part mould and re-cast in latex, which will be added to the rest of the body (a half body without legs, due to time constraints). The mouth will be operated by a hand inserted under the body.
At a show at "The Jazz Cafe" in San Jose, the intermission band was accompanied by large puppets and masked dancers!
Another night, I went to a shadow puppet show, again a long-time Balinese custom. Like the dance show I saw earlier, I found it long and boring. And I was sort of amazed how this ancient storytelling art still managed to include bodily function jokes and passing gas.

Cover your entire puppet head. There is no need to let it dry before going onto the next step, unless your students have used so much paste that attachments or the neck are sagging. In that event, you may wish to let the head dry before proceeding.

In Yogyakarta I went to see traditional Indonesian puppets being made and then a puppet show.

This pic shows the armature - solid body so no spine movement for this puppet - I also didn't have any character in mind at this stage ... did find out some interesting tips and tricks - also made the process a lot simpler and non scary!
