A heartbreaking episode in history, explained through the story of a young servant girl in the late 1800s.

The year is 1882. A young servant girl named Esther disappears from a small Hungarian village. Several Jewish men from the village of Tisza Eszvar face the ‘blood libel’ — the centuries-old calumny that Jews murder Christian children for their blood. A fourteen-year-old Jewish boy named Morris Scharf becomes the star witness of corrupt authorities who coerce him into testifying against his fellow Jews, including his own father, at the trial.

Jim Henson was one of the creators of Sesame Street, the guiding force behind "The Muppet Show" and part of the creative team that made The Dark Crystal and The Labyrinth (movies) come to life.

This portrait of him; with one of his creations, Kermit the frog; is from a sheet of US postage stamps issued in 2005. Click here to see some of the Muppets puppets: flickr.com/photos/43067379@N00/2833182543/in/photostream/

Sadly, he died in 1990 at the age of 53, but Kermit, Big Bird and the rest of the gang continue to delight and educate successive generations of youngsters on Sesame Street.

“I was watching a soap opera and all of a sudden an earthquake took place,” says Natcharin, a 13-year old girl who lives in Chiang Saen, northern Thailand. “My mum and I hid under the table and bed. If there is a disaster, people in our community will be in trouble."

Natcharin recently attended a 2-day workshop with 29 other children from 4 villages to create characters and stories to use for a shadow puppet show all about disasters.

“In our story, we want to talk about how it isn’t good to ignore flood warnings. I’ll use my knowledge to perform for adults and children so that they know how dangerous disasters can be”.

Shadow puppetry is an effective way for vulnerable children and communities to learn about disaster risk reduction using easy, fun and engaging media. In partnership with Plan Thailand, the organisation Wondering Moon uses shadow theatre to tell stories of disasters.

I copied the picture on the pattern. The tunic is made from cheap cotton from WalMart. When I sew a pattern for the first time, I try it out with cheap fabric. The shorts are linen.

Beautiful mini little lions. They're actually puppets. I love the colors! The lions are wishing you "much wealth"

As an artist I work primarily to transform found and recycled objects into puppets and small theatre like settings that recall ancient mythology and folktales. The Janus headed puppet takes its concept from classical mythology and was created for a stop motion film and as a device to frame shots through its open box torso. The puppet is made from many materials such as found turtle bones, an old watch case, a spoon, almond shells and butterfly wings encased in mica. Papier-mache pulp forms the dual faces and copper wire binds the varied parts into cohesive and bendable limbs.

Went to see a puppet show at the library today - got another shot of my all*stars. So this is what I would look like in brown shoes - with deathly grey legs.

Just to clarify - this pic has the colors switched - these shoes are actually blue and my legs are actually alive. :)

The giant puppets have failed to get the attention of the library users, but they caught mine!

a little mexican marionette puppet

I bought this creepy puppet at an estate sale last year for $3. And I can't remember where I bought Jessie. I might have gotten her at a flea market in Berkley last year. It was love at first sight for the two of them, and have they been inseparable. I did a photo shoot with them awhile back, and am just now uploading the photos.

Here they are enjoying the great outdoors.
