rough sketches for some of the bag art for Puddle! I'm very happy to be able to contribute this year.

Giant Swallowtail hung around for about 20 minutes. This one shows a pretty good view of both sides of the wings.

Unedited shot of a car in Amsterdam, reflected in a puddle. Taken with my Sony HX1. No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :)

Dedicated to Shristina, who likes a splash of color in my puddles :)

When I was a wee little Reflectah, I used to love playing with my toy cars, so when I came across this beauty, I had massive flashbacks to my childhood, and luckily there was a puddle around to capture this dream of a Hot Rod :)

I wanted to get reflections of pedestrians in this puddle, but it was somewhat inadequate. I had to be satisfied with a cut-down version.

Some leaves floating in a puddle. A reminder that autumn is just around the corner. Although meteorologists will tell you it's already here in the northern hemisphere.

puddle walk kalidromiou

Two days after the heavy rain that hit Yosemite the ground was still wet and many puddles could be found on the Valley Loop Trail. As we walked from Yosemite Falls to Mirror Lake I couldn't help but look at the reflections in the still water of the puddles and imagine they were portals to another world - a mirror universe perhaps...

As it turned out these were the only mirror-like reflections to be had on that walk, as Mirror Lake itself was totally dry.

I came across this puddle about 20 minutes after watching a video on Street Photography on the Creative Live site. The photographer was in Seattle and he did a couple of these types of shots. It was fun to come across a puddle so soon after seeing that video.

.... the bright green blade of grass caught my eye in this late afternoon puddle, which was still reflecting some sky on its surface ...

Wellesley Avenue, Saint John.

Escaping the city bustle within the alternate world of puddle reflections. My spirit is renewed and relaxed after evenings like this.

With a fine mist coming down, CP 141 rolls past Chesterton with a very crusty 8500-series AC44 leading. As much as they're not pleasing to the eye, who knows how long these have until they are rebuilt. Then we'll miss them.

A sunset and a puddle

As if the news everywhere could worsen.

Just reflections on a puddle.

This picture is sooc as usual, captured with my Nikon D200.

"Honk if you’re happy!”

This is a favourite field for CANGs, of which there were several clipping the grass and fertilizing the field this afternoon, These two seemed to be enjoying the puddle just as many youngsters do....

Saw this solitary leave floating on top of a puddle full of leaves - love it.

Reflection captured in a tiny puddle only about 1/4 inch deep and 10 inches across. I decided not to crop out the concrete at the top so that the viewer can see why the upside-down trees are not in perfect focus.

By the end of my second visit to Wollaton Park as part of my rhododendron quest, I was starting to try and develop a more creative mindset. The path by the lake is dark and enclosed by mature vegetation, but every so often light is able to penetrate. I was very drawn to this puddle and its colourful reflection along this path. By shooting with a longer focal length, I was able to focus on the reflection and blur the shadow areas of the composition. I also flipped the image in post processing so that the rhododendron is seen the "correct" way up.

Puddle: I love water! My name is watery and rainbows are watery. I'm so happy right now!

This family of geese came to drink in the puddles

Good morning everyone and I hope you had a nice weekend. I thought I would start the week out with a short video (30 seconds long) of a Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) puddling.

Puddling is the term given to the aggregation of some insects on wet soil or dung to obtain moisture and nutrients. Puddling is most commonly seen in butterflies, sometimes with large numbers of individual butterflies gathering at the edge of puddles, on wet soil, dung or carrion. The butterflies use their proboscis to obtain moisture and also other nutrients and salts.

For those of you not crazy about videos, I also included two still shots of the same butterfly, which can be found in the comment section and my stream.

As a side note, both the video and photos were taken on an overcast day with intermittent showers. Plus it stormed pretty heavily the night before. The only reason I mention it is because everything was very wet and damp, which chiggers love. Being the dampness, and they must have been out in droves. While on my hands & knees taking videos and pics I ended up with a slew of chigger bites. So many it was nearly impossible to sleep the next two nights due to the burning and itching :-(

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day and week,

Lacey
