The World's Fair: Columbian Exposition (also known as the Chicago World's Fair) was a world's fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World in 1492. At the core of the fair was an area that quickly became known as the White City for its buildings with white stucco siding and its streets illuminated by electric lights.

SNOW GOES

This year's slow melt has meant little to no flowing water in ditches, as seen here west of Brunkild the afternoon of April 1.

This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 28th of August 1915.

During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.

The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images please comment below.

Roswell Museum & Art Center

In 1898, a teenage Robert Hutchings Goddard (1882-1945), captivated by the realism of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, “…imagined how wonderful it would be to make some device which had even the possibility of ascending to Mars.” He began enthusiastically filling notebooks with ideas for getting off the planet. As a graduate student in physics at Clark College in Worcester, Massachusetts, his hometown, he conducted simple tests with gun powder that suggested it was indeed possible to construct a rocket for space travel.

In 1919, while teaching at Clark College, Goddard published his ideas in a paper that sparked interest in the physics circles, but was ridiculed in the popular press. Embarrassed but undaunted, Dr. Goddard began to conduct pioneering experiments with gasoline and liquid oxygen fuels. On March 16, 1926, Goddard launched his first successful liquid propellant rocket at his Aunt Effie’s farm in Auburn, Massachusetts. The rocket soared 41 feet in the air and 184 feet from the tower. It was not long before these attempts drew scrutiny from the press, and the interest of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh and financier Harry Guggenheim who were interested in the potential for rocket travel. Looking for a locale to conduct his experiments that was rural and with a good year-round climate led Goddard to Roswell, New Mexico where he remained for 12 years. During this time, Goddard and his crew made major strides on practical matters of launch control, tracking, and recovery. Seventeen of fifty-six flights accomplished in Roswell reached altitudes of over 1,000 feet.

In 1942, Dr. Goddard was placed on contract at Annapolis, Maryland to develop rocket-assisted aircraft takeoff mechanisms, and on August 10, 1945 he died. In 1949, Goddard’s wife, Esther, began a series of gifts to the Roswell Museum and Art Center of her husband’s rocket technology, and in 1969 the Robert H. Goddard wing was dedicated.

Robert H. Goddard was a member of the Roswell Rotary Club, which has since figured prominently in the preservation of his legacy. In 1969 the Rotarians built a recreation of Goddard’s workshop; in 1995 they funded a reinterpretation of the Goddard materials: Robert Hutchings Goddard: Dreamer, Tinkerer, Pioneer.

The Postcard

A postally unused postcard published by M.T. Sheahan of Boston Massachusetts. They state on the back of the card:

'Sheahan's Good Mottos

make the world brighter'.

Although the card was not posted, someone has used a pen to write a name and address on the right hand side of the divided back:

Miss Edith M. Laurence,

Teacher,

Fairbanks School,

Cornville,

Maine.

There was also a brief message:

"Kindest wishes from

Caro C. Cooley,

June 26, 1908".

M. T. Sheahan

M. T. Sheahan of 297, Congress Street, Boston, Mass., who operated between 1903 and 1910, was a fine art printer and publisher, who in addition to producing prints created many postcards on themes of animals, humor, greetings, and mottos.

Nixon Waterman

The poem was written in 1902 by Nixon Waterman.

Waterman was born on the 12th. November 1859, in Newark, Kendall County, Illinois. He was a newspaper writer, poet and Chautauqua lecturer, who rose to prominence in the 1890's.

Chautauqua was an adult education movement in the United States, highly popular in the late 19th. and early 20th. centuries. Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920's.

The Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, showmen, preachers, and specialists of the day.

U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is:

'The most American

thing in America'.

Nixon died on the 1st. September 1944, in Canton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

Kenyon Taylor

So what else happened on the day that the card was written?

Well, on Friday the 26th. June 1908, Maurice Kenyon Taylor was born in Balloch, Scotland.

He was a British electrical engineer and inventor responsible for many diverse technological developments and inventions, producing over 70 patents during his career.

Taylor came up with the idea of displaying information by means of a fixed array of dots, by way of a Flip-disc-display. These were used in stock exchanges and airports around the world.

Taylor died on the 29th. June 1986.

Many of you have probably heard of the huge Microsoft campus but have never seen it for yourself.

Well, here it is, spewing darkness and despair - the root of all evil.

Published, with my review, on the Denver Post's Reverb music review blog, here:

blogs.denverpost.com/reverb/2009/01/27/rob-drabkin-the-so...

-----------------

Friday's show at the Soiled Dove Underground was the continuation of the annual birthday bash for Denver's own Rob Drabkin. The venue played excellent host to Rob and several hundred of his closest friends, including Andrea Ball and Vonnegut, and the show served to highlight Rob's new release "On These Heavy Feet".

Andrea Ball started things off with a blend of acoustic guitar and piano, culminating with the funky "Beat Beat Pound". She even honored Rob's birthday in her own special way by pointing out that she, and more than a few of the audience's female members, had worn Rob Drabkin t-shirts, even though she had just shocked an unsuspecting audience member by donning hers in the bathroom just before showtime.

Vonnegut did their best to set the place on fire with the energy and credible rock star attitude they consistently bring to the table. I wondered if they would have to tone things down a bit, as I noticed the crowd was skewed a bit towards their 30's, rather than the 20-somethings I usually see in attendance at Vonnegut shows. But this crowd seemed hungry to celebrate with Rob, and played right into Vonnegut's hand, letting all their hooks and transitions sink in deep, and draw them to the floor. Heck, I think they could have gotten away with a stage dive, at that point.

Of course Rob and a few friends took the stage last, and the crowd filled in the last empty spots on the floor. We had the privelage of seeing him share the stage with many of the artists and musicians who had contributed such great work to his new release, all sounding flawless with their string arrangements.

Foremost among the guests, though, was Rob's father, Harry Drabkin, who seemed to just beg to be called "Dad". Mr. Drabkin, a talented tenor saxophonist, contributes several places on the album, and has obviously contributed so much to his son's musical development. To see him on stage this night was magic, especially when he took the spotlight for his song, "Lullaby".

Top off the night with a birthday cake delivered on stage by his mom, that ended up being devoured piece by piece by the crowd at the merch table after the show while Rob mingled, and I think he cemented this occasion as an annual celebration, not of HIS birthday, but a reason to pull together some of Denver's other great talent on stage in front of a crowd that is just asking for an excuse to get together and party.

Petticoat panel with Chinoiserie Motifs England (c. 1700) Linen Embroidered with Silk, 92.7 × 135.9 × 7.6 cm. By the late seventeenth century the appeal of Far Eastern goods had reached most levels of English society. Those who could not afford luxurious imports could turn to domestically produced options. In 1688 A Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing by John Stalker and George Parker was published in London. The popular how-to guide includes twenty-four chinoiserie illustrations for decorating a variety of objects with an Asian flair. This embroidered panel is one of several English examples from the period stitched with such designs. Included are well-known motifs such as a fan-toting woman shaded by an attendant’s parasol and tiny pavilions dwarfed by oversized foliage. Despite the typical lack of cultural and geographic specificity, Europeans would have understood the images to symbolize the Far East. -The Metropolitan Museum of Art Chinoiserie Orientalism
