Link: bit.ly/fatareport | Reports and Photographs from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in Pakistan.

Published in November 2014, the report features photos taken by young photographers from FATA, examples of everyday life in Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram and South Waziristan agencies. Images of the iconic Khyber Pass and many towns along the border with Afghanistan lend a real-life dimension to this largely unknown, and often ignored or misrepresented region of Pakistan. In a part of the world where photography is uncommon, these photographs depict subtle interactions of FATA citizens at work, at school and during informal moments throughout the tribal areas.

The report text, entitled "The Struggle for Rights and Reforms in Pakistan's Tribal Areas" describes the history and trajectory of reform demands made by Pakistani citizens, civil society groups and the people of FATA. Also included are quotes from citizens and political leaders, collected to show opinions and visions for the future of FATA. Voices included demonstrate a strong desire for equal rights and equal participation in the context of Pakistan's evolving democracy.

For those who know the tribal areas well, this report may serve as a reminder of the great number of Pakistanis working for a brighter future for FATA. For those previously not aware of the political activities in FATA, the report may provide a new and unique glimpse at the diverse richness of the culture and people in Pakistan's tribal areas.

The 75 photographs were carefully selected from over 1,000 that were submitted for review. All are from young photographers between the ages of 17 and 30, from varied socio-economic backgrounds in FATA. Without their efforts and talent, the report would not have been possible. Many thanks to the photographers--and those featured in their work--for the privilege of sharing these images and the stories they tell.

The Postcard

A postally unused Norman Series postcard published by Shoesmith & Etheridge Ltd. of Hastings. The image is a real photograph, and the card was printed in Great Britain. Note the almost complete absence of traffic.

The Metropole Hotel on the left has since been demolished and replaced with an ugly block of flats, and the gardens in front of it are no longer so neat and well-maintained.

All that is left of the Metropole Hotel is the first part of its name - the block of flats is named Metropole Court.

'Eastbourne' by Dave Griffin

Here is a great poem about Eastbourne:

'In Eastbourne, in winter,

Pinched ladies hum under their breath

In charity shops

That smell of ironing boards and musty suits,

Belonging to men recently buried.

The promenade, set with magnolia-washed hotels,

Is too cold, dear, for an afternoon stroll,

But carers pushing wheelchairs, three abreast,

Heavy with their silent, sullen,

Ungrateful charges,

From the Autumn Leaves nursing home,

Cheerfully defy the east wind,

And look for: 'Somewhere That's Open -

Where we can get a cup of tea'.

Eastbourne in winter.

Its grand buildings stand as rigid,

As bustled great-aunts at an Edwardian wedding.

The town awaits springtime church-outing coachloads,

Who will fill the Nelson tea-rooms,

And elegant graffiti-free sea front shelters,

With nattering Methodist wives.

They are of a fellowship.

They know about net curtains, pleats and hat pins,

And remember the war.

On Wednesdays, the Eastbourne Rotary Club meets,

And there is a matinee of Arsenic and Old Lace,

At the Pier Theatre,

As well as a coffee afternoon at St. Peter's.

All are welcome, invites the fluorescent,

Happing notice outside.

Eastbourne in winter,

A town where men wear ties on their day off,

Adding a V-necked pullover in retirement.

The warm library reading room is full.

Walking sticks hang over the backs of chairs.

A pensioner with a magnifying glass,

Studies tonight's Hackney form,

And another pours tea, surreptitiously,

From an ancient Thermos.

She offers a sip to her friend, who declines,

With a disapproving shake of her head,

And ponders how much it would cost

To heat the flat all day in this weather

The floral clock is being dressed for summer.

Its hands painted by young men,

In an old folks' town.

The wrought iron street lamps,

Thickened with another coat of corporation gloss,

And inside peeling terraces,

Old men polish their medals,

And press their trousers,

For tonight's reunion at the Grand Hotel.

They will observe a minute's silence,

To their fallen comrades.

Each year they are fewer in number,

In Eastbourne, in winter,

The saviours of the world drive Invacars.

Instead of tanks'.

The Postcard

A postally unused carte postale published by A. Dubosq, Commes (Calvados).

Bayeux

The buildings in Bayeux were virtually untouched during the Battle of Normandy, the German forces being fully involved in defending Caen from the Allies.

The Bayeux War Cemetery with its memorial includes the largest British cemetery dating from the Second World War in France. There are 4,648 graves, including 3,935 British and 466 Germans. Most of those buried there were killed in the invasion of Normandy.

Bayeux Cathedral

The Norman-Romanesque Cathedral was consecrated on Friday the 14th. July 1077 in the presence of William, Duke of Normandy. The chapter house was added in the 12th century, and the chapels were built in the 14th century.

An octagonal storey, decorated with open-work, was added to the lantern-tower in the 15th century, and finally a stone dome was built in the 18th. century.

The nave is 24 m high and 96 m long.

The Bayeux Tapestry

The Cathedral was the original home of the Bayeux tapestry which was first referred to in writing in 1476. The tapestry is 50 cm wide by 70 metres long (20 inches by 230 feet), and it illustrates the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England, as well as the events of the invasion itself. It is not a true tapestry, because the design is not woven into the fabric of the cloth - it is in fact an embroidery.

The tapestry is now housed nearby at the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux which is at the Centre Guillaume le Conquérant.

A video presentation and series of displays explain how the tapestry was sewn. It still looks fresh and new - it it difficult to believe that it was completed over 900 years ago. Nevertheless, despite its new appearance, at least two of the panels are known to be missing.

There is also a Victorian replica of the tapestry in Reading UK. Each of the embroiderers stitched her name beneath her completed panel.

Halley's Comet

The tapestry includes an image of Halley's Comet, shown as a firey star. Modern astronomy tells us that the comet would have been visible from the 20th March 1066. On that occasion the comet came to within 0.10 Astronomical Units of the earth (about 15 million kilometres).

The next appearance of Halley's Comet will be on the 28th. July 2061. Many of us won't be around to see it, but this beautiful cathedral will still be there.

This edition published in 1968 (8th impression) by George Allen and Unwin, translated by Malcolm Barnes.

Soooo nostalgic this one -a bittersweet story that I gazed at for ages even before I could read.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

By R. A. Jones

This week, let’s take a look at two eagerly awaited new Batman comics which have just landed in the specialty shops.

The first of these is “Arkham Asylum”, a hand-painted, hardback book that retails for a whopping $24.95. For those not in the know, Arkham Asylum is the place where such lunatic villains as the Joker are sent to serve time. In this meandering opus, we’re told two stories: the history of the doctor who founded the asylum, and an adventure in which Batman battles the various villains who have taken over the facility.

Neither story is of any interest, and both abound with amateur pop psychology that would embarrass psychologist Joyce Brothers. It’s supposed to be profound, of course, but is really only muddled and confused. Examples? The stalwart Batman is reduced to a quivering mass of gelatin by a simple word association test, then proceeds to drive a jagged shard of glass completely through his hand for no apparent reason. Makes you wonder who should be the patient here.

The painted artwork is lovely, but just as difficult to decipher as the story. Also, whereas a normal Batman comic is suitable for nearly all ages, “Arkham Asylum”, by virtue of violence, language, and grim situations, is purely adult fare. And no adult in his right mind would care to squander $25 this way.

Only slightly more satisfying is “Gotham by Gaslight”. This $3.95 book is a “What If” adventure wherein Batman lives in the year 1889 and tangles with the notorious Jack the Ripper. Besides being the most poorly colored book of this type I’ve ever seen, it also is saddled with an incredibly trite script. Anyone who is surprised when the true identity of the Ripper is revealed should go back to reading “Dick and Jane” primers.

The Batman phenomenon has helped attract many new customers into comic book shops – but, let’s hope they pass up these two volumes in favor of one of the many good books available.

The American Diabetes Association has published its Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes - 2020, and includes statements on the effectiveness of managing carbohydrate intake for people with diabetes and those at risk for diabetes. The standard advises replacing sugar-sweetened beverages, including fruit juices, with water. The American Heart Association continues to certify 100% fruit juice as heart-healthy in its latest list of heart healthy foods.

“People with diabetes and those at risk are advised to replace sugar-sweetened beverages (including fruit juices) with water as much as possible in order to control glycemia and weight and reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease and fatty liver B and should minimize the consumption of foods with added sugar that have the capacity to displace healthier, more nutrient-dense food choices.”

“Reducing overall carbohydrate intake for individuals with diabetes has demonstrated the most evidence for improving glycemia and may be applied in a variety of eating patterns that meet individual needs and preferences.”

The American Heart Association operates a food certification program “Heart-Check”

I completed the check with two different situations, a normoglycemic individual and a person with hyperglycemia. Both individuals are advised not to skip dessert, with a key word substitution - “ Your sweet tooth won't miss the added sugars.” for the person with hyperglycemia, “Your sweet tooth won't miss the saturated fats” for the person without. The banana advice is taken away for the person with hyperglycemia.

The assessment does not ask about validated measures of heart health, including triglycerides or HDL.

The assessment does not include or ask about consumption of 100% fruit juice as a sugar sweetened beverage. American Heart Association certifies 100% fruit juices in practice.

In September, the AHA came under fire for posting a breakfast recipe on Twitter that suggested adding maple syrup honey and orange juice to an already high-carbohydrate mixture for heart health.

The Postcard

A postally unused postcard that was published by the Photochrom Co. Ltd. The card has a divided back.

The Photochrom Co. Ltd.

The Photochrom Co. Ltd. of London and Royal Tunbridge Wells originally produced Christmas cards before becoming a major publisher and printer of tourist albums, guide books, and postcards.

These mainly captured worldwide views as real photos, or were printed in black & white, monochrome, and color.

They also published many advertising, comic, silhouette, novelty, panoramic, and notable artist-signed cards in named series as well. The huge number of titles that Photochrom produced may well exceed 40,000.

In 1896 they took over Fussli’s London office established three years earlier, and began publishing similar photo-chromolithographic postcards after securing the exclusive English licence for the Swiss photochrom process.

This technique was used to produce a great number of view-cards of both England and Europe. While they captured the same fine details as the Swiss prints, their colours were much softer and reduced.

Apart from their better known photochroms, they produced their Celesque series of view-cards printed in tricolor.

One of the largest unnamed series that Photochrom produced was of view-cards printed in brown rotogravure. Many of these cards were simply hand coloured with a dominant red and blue, which gives these cards a distinct appearance. They are similar to cards produced in their Photogravure and Velvet Finish Series.

Photochrom postcard series include:

-- Night Series - Line block halftone over a blue tint depicting London.

-- Carbofoto Series - Black & white real photo cards.

-- Sepiatone Series - Sepia real photo cards.

-- Grano Series - View-cards printed in black & white.

-- Exclusive Photo-Color Series - View-cards printed in colour.

-- Duotype Process Series - View-cards printed in two tones.

Rottingdean

During the 18th. and 19th. centuries, Rottingdean was a smugglers' village - a time recalled by Rudyard Kipling's 'A Smuggler's Song':

'If you wake at midnight, and hear a horse's feet,

Don't go drawing back the blind, or looking in the street,

Them that ask no questions isn't told a lie.

Watch the wall my darling while the Gentlemen go by!

Five and twenty ponies,

Trotting through the dark -

Brandy for the Parson, 'Baccy for the Clerk.

Laces for a lady; letters for a spy,

Watch the wall my darling while the Gentlemen go by!

Running round the woodlump if you chance to find

Little barrels, roped and tarred, all full of brandy-wine,

Don't you shout to come and look, nor use 'em for your play.

Put the brishwood back again - and they'll be gone next day!

If you see the stable-door setting open wide;

If you see a tired horse lying down inside;

If your mother mends a coat cut about and tore;

If the lining's wet and warm - don't you ask no more!

If you meet King George's men, dressed in blue and red,

You be careful what you say, and mindful what is said.

If they call you " pretty maid," and chuck you 'neath the chin,

Don't you tell where no one is, nor yet where no one's been!

Knocks and footsteps round the house - whistles after dark -

You've no call for running out till the house-dogs bark.

Trusty's here, and Pincher's here, and see how dumb they lie

They don't fret to follow when the Gentlemen go by!

'If You do as you've been told, 'likely there's a chance,

You'll be give a dainty doll, all the way from France,

With a cap of Valenciennes, and a velvet hood -

A present from the Gentlemen, along 'o being good!

Five and twenty ponies,

Trotting through the dark -

Brandy for the Parson, 'Baccy for the Clerk.

Them that asks no questions isn't told a lie -

Watch the wall my darling while the Gentlemen go by!'

Starting From Scratch; Remembering Farley

By Dr. Jon Suter

Since the advent of “The Yellow Kid”, a market has existed for reprints of comic strips. Supermarket racks teem with compilations of “Beetle Bailey” and “Family Circus”; patrons of bookstores encounter larger anthologies. Frequent reprinting of older anthologies provides a barometer of the continuing interest in continuity strips such as “Doonesbury” and Lynn Johnston’s “For Better or Worse”.

Polls consistently give high ratings to Johnston’s fictional Pattersons, a family akin to the cartoonist’s own. The characters age in real time and encounter the hilarious and dark sides of life. Death and violence have touched characters close to the Pattersons, but not the family itself.

In 1995, the infant April was rescued from drowning by Farley, the family’s aging sheepdog, who died as a consequence.

Some readers were aghast; others applauded the realism. Consistent readers shouldn’t have been surprised. Johnston foreshadowed the event thoroughly. Two recent anthologies make this clear.

In “Starting From Scratch” (McMeel and Andrews, 1996), Farley sired a litter of pups, including Edgar, whom the Pattersons adopted. Prior to that, we find allusions to Farley’s age and physical deterioration. The book ends with Farley’s death and burial.

In a shrewd effort to capitalize on public interest, the publisher has issued “Remembering Farley”, a reprise of sequences from his birth onwards. Readers can follow his growth from tiny puppy to aging hero. (This reader found an earlier and forgotten reference to Farley’s age.) Effective closure is provided by the inclusion of strips from the summer of 1995 which depict the oldest child’s first visit to Farley’s grave.

Those who own the original “For Better of Worse” anthologies may not want the repackaged “tribute”, but this format does allow a view of Johnston’s consistent skill at characterization and plot development.

If aging humans are allowed to die in the next few years, it will be interesting to see how the public reacts. No comedy strip has allowed a major character to die onstage.
