This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 1st of September 1915.
During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.
The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.

"The Neighborhood News" was published by my mother and her neighbor-friend Joan Kirk over the summer of 1958 (barring a few weeks when Mom was at summer camp and Joan had to pad out the contents with excerpted poems and jokes). Its contents largely deal with the ins and outs of the McMillan and Kirk families, but in order to boost subscribership they gave token representation to other neighbors' bingo winnings, minor car accidents, et cetera. One of the more charming things about it is watching the courtship of Nancy and Watkins Ewell move along over the course of the summer. The one regular feature was "Billy," a series of cartoons my mother describes as "sort of lame" and "probably ripped off of Nancy."
The Postcard
A Glosso Series postcard that was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Art Publishers to Their Majesties the King and Queen. Unusually the photograph was taken in a real bedroom rather than a studio.
The card was posted in Borough Green, Kent using a ½d. stamp on Wednesday the 30th. September 1908. It was sent to:
Mr. W. S. McClough,
c/o Mrs. T. Dix,
Butchers,
Weybridge,
Surrey.
The message on the divided back was as follows:
"Dear Mac,
Just a line. Did you
get the letter & parcel?
I thought I should have
had a letter.
Hoping your thumb is
getting better.
Cheer up,
From yours,
Buff.
p.s. I have heard a bit
more. Swank."
The Stranding of the E. Waterman
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 30th. September 1908, the U. S. 107 ton schooner E. Waterman was stranded at St. Stephen, New Brunswick. All five people on board survived.
757 Portlandia
Also on that day, the amateur American astronomer Joel E. Metcalf discovered a hitherto unknown asteroid. Joel, from Taunton, Massachusetts, was a church minister in Portland at the time. The two towns are 51 miles apart. The asteroid was named for the city of Portland, Maine.
757 Portlandia is a main-belt asteroid 32 km in diameter. Lets hope it never comes anywhere near Planet Earth.
The Blue Bird
The 30th. September 1908 also marked the premier if the play The Blue Bird.
The Blue Bird (French: L'Oiseau Bleu) is a 1908 play by the Belgian playwright and poet Maurice Maeterlinck. It premiered at Konstantin Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre, and was presented on Broadway in 1910.
It was translated into English by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. In 1911, Maeterlinck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
The French composer Albert Wolff wrote an opera (first performed by the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1919) based on Maeterlinck's original play.
Maeterlinck also wrote a relatively little known sequel to The Blue Bird titled The Betrothal; or, The Blue Bird Chooses.
-- The Blue Bird's Storyline
The story is about a girl called Mytyl and her brother Tyltyl seeking happiness, represented by The Blue Bird of Happiness, aided by the good fairy Bérylune.
In the opening scene, the two children gleefully describe the beautiful decorations and rich desserts that they see in the house of a wealthy family nearby. When Bérylune says that it is wrong for the rich not to share their cakes with Tyltyl and Mytyl, the boy corrects her. It is enough that he gets to watch others’ happiness; their joy does not create envy in him.
The theme is emphasized again when the children meet the Luxuries, particularly the biggest one of all, the Luxury of Being Rich. When Tyltyl turns the diamond, the hall is bathed with a dazzling brightness, and the Luxuries run wildly in search of a dark corner where they may hide their ugliness from the ethereal light.
At the end of the play, Tyltyl shows what he has learned about happiness. He looks out the window at the forest and remarks how beautiful it is. The inside of the house looks much lovelier to him than it did before. Also, he creates great happiness for another by giving his pet bird, which seems much bluer than before, to the sick child.

Il primo che vi sveliamo è un dj e produttore di fama internazionale, con oltre 8 milioni di album venduti in tutto il mondo e vincitore di 2 Grammy Awards: David Guetta! Per la prima volta in Italia con la sua band, eseguirà live durante la Finale il singolo Dangerous, il brano certificato platino e contenuto in Listen, il suo primo album di canzoni che vede la partecipazione di artisti del calibro di Emili Sande a John Legend, SIA, Nicki Minaj, The Script, Magic!, Ryan Tedder di One Republic.
I secondi ospiti internazionali sono la “New band of the day” come li definisce il Guardian: "Ogni loro canzone si annuncia con un fiorire e molto slancio, e c'è una leggera spolverata di ritmi caraibici, sapori tropicali e salotto-jazz." Tiziano Ferro intraprenderà il suo secondo tour di stadi, a partire da giugno 2017: lo Stadio San Siro di Milano ospiterà il nuovo attesissimo spettacolo di Tiziano il 16, il 17 e il 19 giugno.
Oltre due ore con una scaletta ricca, una scenografia sorprendente con cascate d’acqua a sorpresa mentre il cantautore nel pieno della sua maturità artistica riesce a creare un rapporto intimo col suo pubblico.
Con Lo Stadio Tour del 2015 Tiziano Ferro ha entusiasmato oltre 300.000 fan in 8 concerti e il tour europeo nei palazzetti (a novembre e dicembre 2015) ha registrato il sold-out in tutte le oltre venti date in calendario, con uno show visto da un totale di oltre 450.000 persone durante il 2015.

Harvey Kurtzman’s Strange Adventures

There are three great fears for a writer: the inability to write; that their best work is already past; that they’ll die before creating a masterpiece. There’s no evidence that Harvey Kurtzman ever suffered writer’s block, and “Mad Magazine”, “Frontline Combat” and “Two Fisted Tales” are undisputed masterpieces.
Two out of three is missed fears isn’t bad.
“Strange Adventures” is a beautifully produced anthology of Kurtzman stories, illustrated by seven talented artists including Kurtzman himself. It’s touted as the long awaited return to the “Mad” format that made the cartoonist famous. It’s actually a rehashing of worn themes without his hard-edged, biting wit.
“Shmegeggi of the Cavemen” is the best of the book, taking a poignant look at how genius ahead of its time is alternately praised and outcast by society. The artwork by William Stout is beautiful, and perfectly suited for a story where the first kiss is considered kinky by the status quo. But one gem does not a crown make.
Among the other genres winked at are pirate movies, westerns, horror and kid stories, and superhero comics.
That Harvey used to stick out his tongue at the stupidity of man and his art is the problem with “Strange Adventures”. Doing so is satire. Kurtzman winks now, and that’s not satire. Oversimplified, this distinction is like the difference between Woody Allen films – substance – and “Police Academy” movies – surface.
This book is surface without substance.
Some critics may argue that weak Harvey is better than none. But Kurtzman has missed the high mark that he, as much as anyone, established in comics. While it doesn’t diminish his early brilliance, this book adds nothing to one of the most distinguished careers in comics.

MINIVIEW: “Cerebus – Jaka’s Story”. Over 400 pages at $24.95, possibly the only real graphic novel released in 1990. Despite occasional visual and prose padding, artist and writer Dave Sims continues to raise the quality of adult comics. Highly recommended. Available by mail.

The card was posted on Wednesday the 23rd. July 1919 to:

The back of the card bears a rectangular blue censor's stamp numbered 1804. The censor has also signed the card.
The pencilled message on the back of the card was as follows:
"Rhine Army.
Hope you are alright -
haven't heard since
Saturday".
There have been two formations named British Army of the Rhine (BAOR). Both were originally occupation forces in Germany, one after the First World War, and the other after the Second World War.
The first British Army of the Rhine was set up in March 1919 to implement the occupation of the Rhineland. It originally comprised five corps, composed of two divisions each, plus a cavalry division.
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Not a lot, but two days earlier, on Monday the 21st. July 1919, there was an air accident in Chicago.
The Wingfoot Air Express was a dirigible that crashed into the Illinois Trust and Savings Building in Chicago. The Type FD dirigible, owned by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, was transporting people from Grant Park to the White City amusement park.
One crew member, two passengers, and ten bank employees were killed in what was, up to that point, the worst dirigible disaster in United States history.
The craft caught fire at about 4:55pm while cruising at an altitude of 1,200 ft (370 m) over the Chicago Loop. When it became clear the dirigible was lost, the pilot, Jack Boettner, and chief mechanic, Harry Wacker, used parachutes to jump to safety. (I'm all right, Jack!)
A second mechanic, Henry Weaver, died when his parachute caught fire. Another passenger, Earl H. Davenport, a publicity agent for the White City Amusement Park, jumped from the dirigible, but his parachute got tangled in the rigging and he hung fifty feet below the burning craft; he was killed when the airship crashed.
A fifth person who parachuted from the dirigible, Chicago Daily News photographer Milton Norton, broke both legs and later died in hospital.
At the Illinois Trust & Savings Bank building at the northeast corner of LaSalle Street and Jackson Boulevard, 150 employees were closing up after the day's business in and around the main banking hall, which was illuminated by a large skylight.
The remains of the Wingfoot struck the bank's skylight directly, and flaming debris fell through to the banking hall below. The result was that ten employees were killed, and 27 banking staff were injured.

961. In fact, for environmental atmosphere, these two photographs make a nice contrast to the widely-published pics of the two new RAN subs in Portsmouth immediately prior to their departure on Feb. 8, 1928.
Its is very much a contrast between an 'The Old Country' type location, and the new.
We believe we've recorded earlier that the two submarines were laid up in Malta for almost nine months when cracks were discovered in their engine columns, and these had to be replaced.
As is well known to naval men, after being gifted to the RN, HMS OXLEY was lost in a collision with HMS TRITON off Stavanger, Norway on Sept 10, 1939 [or torpedoed by TRITON in a covered-up wartime mishap].

I was contacted recently and asked if I would sell a couple of my images so that they could be used in a magazine. I agreed, the magazine arrived in the post today. Both images were used, and one was used as a backdrop for a 2 page spread.

Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey is a world-famous Gothic church in London that has served as the coronation site for British monarchs since 1066, and is the final resting place for 17 kings and queens.
Officially known as the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster, it is a "Royal Peculiar," meaning that it is governed directly by the British Crown rather than a church diocese.
Key Highlights of the Abbey
-- Royal Milestones: The Abbey has hosted 40 coronations (most recently King Charles III in 2023), and at least 16 royal weddings, including Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011.
-- Poets' Corner: The South Transept houses the burials and memorials of legendary writers such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, and Rudyard Kipling.

-- Visitor Information: To visit the Abbey for sightseeing, purchasing a timed ticket online in advance is recommended to avoid extensive ticket office lines. A standard adult ticket (2026) costs £31. In the 1960's an adult ticket cost 2/6d. (12½ pence). How's that for inflation?

Pelicans are large water birds with a distinctive pouch under the beak. As with other members of the order Pelecaniformes, they have webbed feet with four toes. There are 8 species worldwide and only 1 species which occurs in Bangladesh.
