Another shot that got published, this is one of my favs. The girl had just served an army of Chinese tourists coming out of the Summer Palace (Beijing, China) as they boarded their bus and yet she had the window replenished and this bored look on her face as if she couldn't be flustered or bothered at all.

Tre uomini e quattro “bastoni”: le bacchette della batteria di Pat Mastelotto, vigoroso drummer in forze ai King Crimson, più gli stick a dodici corde suonati da Tony Levin (altro cortigiano del Re Cremisi, oltre che inseparabile spalla di Peter Gabriel) e da Markus Reuter, il ragazzino del gruppo.
Si sono battezzati Tony Levin Stickman Trio in onore proprio al Chapman Stick, perno strumentale della loro originale proposta musicale. “Ha dodici corde, sei di basso e sei di chitarra, e un’uscita stereo” spiega Levin “Suonando con Gabriel e con i Crimson io l’ho sempre utilizzato principalmente come un basso, è’ dotato di corde ma può anche essere percosso ricorrendo alla tecnica del tapping, dunque lo si può impiegare contemporaneamente per la ritmica e per le parti soliste, proprio come un pianoforte.
In studio e dal vivo, nell’ampio spazio che lasciano all’improvvisazione e nella costruzione geometrica dei suoni, è evidente la matrice crimsoniana della loro ispirazione (sul palco propongono anche classici come “Red”).
L’irresistibile miscela ritmica e armonica di rock funkeggiante, progressive, avanguardia e jazz, con Tony anche cantante, è il risultato e allo stesso tempo l’ennesimo punto di partenza e destino di una vena creativa brulicante, di una la ricerca impegnata ma con un risultato tutt’altro che difficile.
Chiunque può apprezzarli; dai rockettari, ai jazzofili, a chiunque ami muovere bacino, mani e piedi in turbini irresistibili. Ascoltare per credere. Tecnologico e contemporaneo, ma sempre caldo e pregnante, il suono di Stick Man, l’ultimo album.

This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 11th of March 1916.
During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.
The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories or information to add please comment below.

Per celebrare l'incoronazione, X Factor ha deciso di invitare tanti ospiti, italiani e internazionali, che divideranno il palco del Mediolanum Forum insieme ai nostri talenti.
#XF8 è iniziato con lui e con lui doveva terminare. Dopo la sensazionale performance del primo Live Show sulle note del suo ultimo singolo, Senza scappare mai più, Tiziano Ferro torna a regalarci grande musica d'autore su un palco ancora più grande: quello di Assago!
Per la prima volta a X Factor diamo il benvenuto a una delle rocker più importanti della musica italiana: Gianna Nannini! Con alla spalle 40 anni di carriera, centinaia di live e un album, Hitalia, appena uscito, Gianna Nannini ha scelto il palco di X Factor per regalarvi la Finale più spettacolare di sempre.
Da giudice ad amica e ora ospite della Finale, anche Arisa delizierà il pubblico della sua presenza. Reduce da un tour (Se vedo te tour) per molte tappe sold out, da un film, Colpi di fulmine e da un romanzo edito Mondadori Tu eri tutto per me, Arisa torna a X Factor per portare la sua musica.
L'ultimo ospite italiano che si esibirà sul palco del Medionalum Forum per la Finale di #XF8 è una cantautrice con all'attivo 3 album, un disco multiplatino, sette dischi di platino e due dischi d'oro. Stiamo parlando di Malika Ayane, la cantautrice classe '84 che dal 2008 fa impazzire il pubblico con brani del calibro di Ricomincio da qui e Come foglie.
Ma non è finita qui, vi avevamo parlato di ospiti stranieri... Il primo che vi sveliamo è un dj e produttore di fama internazionale, con oltre 8 milioni di album venduti in tutto il mondo e vincitore di 2 Grammy Awards: David Guetta! Per la prima volta in Italia con la sua band, eseguirà live durante la Finale il singolo Dangerous, il brano certificato platino e contenuto in Listen, il suo primo album di canzoni che vede la partecipazione di artisti del calibro di Emili Sande a John Legend, SIA, Nicki Minaj, The Script, Magic!, Ryan Tedder di One Republic.
I secondi ospiti internazionali sono la “New band of the day” come li definisce il Guardian: "Ogni loro canzone si annuncia con un fiorire e molto slancio, e c'è una leggera spolverata di ritmi caraibici, sapori tropicali e salotto-jazz." Loro sono i Saint Motel, che dal 2009 a oggi sono riusciti a suonare in tutti gli Stati Uniti aprendo i concerti degli Arctic Monkeys e degli Imagine Dragons. Durante la Finale di #XF8 canteranno il loro singolo My Type, che, dopo avere conquistato l'Inghilterra è ora ai vertici delle classifiche radio e di iTunes anche in Italia.
Il diciannovenne siciliano Lorenzo Fragola batte Madh nella finalissima del talent show in onda su Sky che registra record di ascolti e di interattività.

I decided to try to do the same thing they did on a smaller scale. I have a lot of respect for the work that they did after doing it myself.
I doubt if there are many of us who will go back and try to find the exact location that they took a picture sixty three years ago. I can tell you it is a lot of work. It is also a humbling experience. I felt like I had stepped into a time machine. My minds eye still
remembered the original picture that I took at these locations but when standing there sixty three years later it is like stepping out of the time machine. Day to day we don't always notice the changes around us. But many years later the changes are drastic. Most of the before pictures were taken when I was nineteen. And now at eighty two it is a shocking reminder of how old I am. lol."

Florence + The Machine, finalmente, in Italia per un attesissimo concerto invernale. La rock diva e la sua band, suoneranno infatti davanti al pubblico del Mediolanum Forum di Milano il 21 dicembre 2015 con il loro How Blue Tour .
Dopo la consacrazione definitiva del grandissimo live del 20 novembre 2012, la rossa più potente dell'indie-rock è pronta a regalarci un altro show epico.
Per Florence Welch il successo dei primi due dischi Lungs (2009 – Album of the year, Brit Awards 2010) e Ceremonials (2011) ha significato 5 anni di registrazione, promozione e tour. Cerimonials (disco candidato ai Grammy) è stato scritto mentre Florence e i musicisti erano on the road e registrato subito dopo la fine del tour. Gli Show diventavano sempre più grandi, i capelli sempre più rossi e il successo sempre più grande.
Pop star a 21 anni, con 2 album internazionali alle sue spalle, Florence ha scoperto che dedicando 7 anni della sua vita alla musica alcuni elementi della quotidianità erano stati lasciati da parte.

Daredevil/Thief of Sherwood/The Book of Genesis

For a change of pace, this column will be a potpourri, as we look at three very different comics that are all worthy of attention.
In the field of costumed superhero comics, one of the better examples in “Daredevil” (Marvel Comics, $1). Boasting fine art and a mature script, the current issue (#297) begins a four-part story pitting the blind superhero against his archenemy, the Kingpin.
The book also illustrates the change comics have undergone in the past decade. Where it once could have been enjoyed by children of all ages, “Daredevil” is now much more appropriate for those in their teens and older. It gives further proof to our recurring contention that comics aren’t just for kids anymore. Adolescents who like the adventures of superheroes should find plenty to enjoy in this book.
A few weeks back, I gave thumbs down to a horribly painted comic book version of Robin Hood. This time around, I am happy to sing the praises of a comic entitled “Thief of Sherwood” (A-Plus Comics, $2.25).
Produced by a small Canadian publisher in black-and-white, the book is superior to the previous work in both story and art. The first installment of this four-issue series follows the exploits of Robin of Locksley in the Holy Land, as part of the Third Crusade. The book is well worth your time.
Finally, we have – believe it or not – “The Book of Genesis” (Tome Press, $2.25). Actually, this book is simply composed of very short passages of Scripture – but each one is accompanied by a reproduction of the beautiful illustrations of master artist Gustave Dore. Even if you aren’t a Christian, this book comes recommended.
These books show the incredible diversity of product in comics today. All are available in comic book specialty stores.

È in arrivo il festival rock-metal più atteso e importante dell'estate 2012! Quattro giorni, quattro headliner e tantissimi special guests: la Fiera Milano Live diventerà il posto più divertente in cui trascorrere un bel weekend di musica e divertimento!
I Manowar sono un gruppo musicale heavy metal nato ad Auburn, New York, nel 1980, dall'incontro tra il bassista del gruppo Joey DeMaio e il chitarrista Ross the Boss.
Il nome del gruppo deriva da un termine usato nell'inglese arcaico, per l'appunto man o' war o man-o-war, che indicava una tipologia di navi da guerra a vela in uso tra il XVI e il XIX secolo. Un'altra possibile traduzione è quella che intende man-o'-war una contrazione di man of war, letteralmente uomo di guerra. I temi ricorrenti delle loro canzoni sono la mitologia, la guerra, la lealtà e l'onore. I testi delle loro canzoni presentano quasi sempre elogi sulla musica heavy metal, che è visto non solo come un semplice genere musicale, ma come un vero e proprio stile di vita, di cui i Manowar si vantano di essere gli unici seguaci e portatori della parola.
I Manowar sono tra i gruppi antesignani e fondatori del sottogenere epic metal; pionieristico in tal senso è soprattutto l'album Into Glory Ride, pubblicato nel 1983. Il gruppo detiene anche un vasto numero di record. In particolare rivendicano il titolo di "band più rumorosa del mondo" (precedentemente appartenuto ai Motörhead) grazie al Guinness dei primati che ha registrato questo fatto. La band è infatti giunta a quota 148.4 decibel attraverso uno speciale equipaggiamento costruito da John "Dawk" Stillwell. Inoltre è stata la prima band metal a includere argomenti di guerra, spade e metallo sia nelle loro canzoni che nelle loro copertine, a costruirsi un set di amplificatori e chitarre da sé e su propria misura, ad aver registrato un album in Dolby 5.1 e detengono il record per il concerto metal più lungo della storia, con una prestazione di 5 ore ed 1 minuto in cui hanno eseguito oltre 50 brani.
