It is really impressive how much one can do with stone. And how badly we copy it in all these plastic materials.

PUBLISHED!! I made it to the front cover in "Mi Bebe" magazine. In a local magazine. My first front cover and hopefully many to come! Baby Valentina is the one on the cover three months old at the time. I'm Excited!

In the 18th and 19th centuries, a lot of children from the poverty-struck valley of Val Verzasca in Ticino, were sold by their parents as "living brooms" to Italian chimney sweepers. A lot of them did not make it back home. Lisa Tetzner and Kurt Kläber (Kurt Held) documented this story in their famous novel Die Schwarzen Brüder (in Dutch: Levende Bezems), published 1940-1941. The story starts in Sonogno, the last village in the Val Verzasca.

Who would have thought that an amazing mountain bike ride above Naramata in the Okanagan would have led to this? The largest photo on page 39 (right page, square photo) of the newly published Penticton & Wine Country 2009 Visitor's Guide is of a friend enjoying the last of a delicious gewerztraminer from Hillside winery. Happy to get a semi-clear shot on my pocket-cam after having had some of that wine myself!

Fig. 548 (p. 675) - This map of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City) was first published in the ‘Island Atlas’ of Benedetto Bordone (‘Libro di Benedetto Bordone nel quale si ragiona de tutta l’isole del mondo con liloro nomi antichi y moderni’) published in Venice in 1528.

The collection of maps by Benedetto Bordone (‘Islario’), was published some four years after the Nuremberg map (HARDOY, 1964/1973).

A comparison of ‘La gran città di Temixtitan’ with the earlier map brings curious inconsistencies to light. The Bordone map is a mirror image along a vertical axis of the 1524-map with the Y-forked causeway to the left, the T-shaped causeway to the right and the city of Atacuba in the upper left-hand corner.

One can infer, like the 1524-map, that the north is pointing downwards, since Tacuba (Atacuba), in the upper left-hand corner of the map, is in the southern part of modern Mexico City. Yztapalaya (Ixtapalapa) is then situated, in this ‘upside down’ map, in the north-west, while the present part of Mexico City is located in the south-east. The ‘piazza’ adjacent to the square court of the Templo Major is shifted from the left (east) side (in 1524) to the right side (in 1528). So something must have gone terribly wrong in the drawing or printing room of Bordones’ atlas.

The Postcard

A postally unused postcard that was published by C. Harrison Price of 36, George Street, Croydon. The image is a glossy real photograph, and the card, which was printed in England, has a divided back.

If you compare this photograph with an earlier one taken prior to 1903 from virtually the same spot, you can see that the original building has had a number of additions, all of them in keeping with the architect's original symmetrical conception. The added parts all have lighter-coloured roofs. You can see the earlier photo by searching for the tag 34CTS74

Trinity School of John Whitgift

The image on the card presents an unusual view of the rear façade of Trinity School's former premises in North End Croydon. Most postcards of the school show the front façade.

To the left of the front door is Big School, where morning assembly, prize-givings, theatrical and musical performances took place, ably presided over in the latter years by Headmaster Oliver Berthoud and Assistant Headmaster Alan Turner.

The school building was designed by Sir A.W. Blomfield, and was opened in 1871.

Sir Arthur was principally a church architect, and many of the interior and exterior features of the Trinity School building had a church-like feel to them, including the central tower.

For other views of the school building in North End Croydon, please look at the Trinity School album.

The Move to Shirley Park

The building had a lifespan of only 94 years, being torn down in 1965 to make way for the Whitgift Centre, which also swallowed up the two large playing fields and headmaster's house to the rear. All the mature trees in the photograph were swept away as well, along with many others.

When Trinity School moved to its present site at Shirley Park, yet another historic building was torn down, This was Shirley House, originally Lord Eldon's country seat. The house was sold after the Great War, and enlarged to become the Shirley Park Hotel.

The hotel had many illustrious visitors, including Sir Edward Elgar, who entertained his paramour there before beginning his third and last symphony at the age of 74.

It's a pity that Shirley House could not have been integrated into the design of the new complex of school buildings, although the radical clash of styles would have been difficult to overcome.

The Gordon Curve

The lifespan of the school building was 94 years, which means that it is a good example of the Gordon Curve. This states that a building is held in its highest regard when it is brand new. It goes steadily downhill until it reaches its nadir at the age of 70.

If you can get the building past that difficult moment, the curve begins to go up until at 100 it is back to where it was in year 1. However the school building didn't quite make it.

The Whitgift Shopping Centre that replaced it is now over 50 years old - maybe in another 20 years it too will be torn down!
