I received these two books in the mail yesterday — no note or anything. What the heck; I didn't order these. Especially two of the same thing. Then a light came on in my head and I started looking for a shot that would be mine. I found two - the ones on the right. That was a surprise. I don't remember anything about this transaction.
So, I'm now published in a national travel book. Cool indeed. Credits are in the front of the book, but whoever looks at those anyway.
Today's blog post.

The Prince's Palace of Monaco
The Prince's Palace of Monaco is the official residence of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco. Built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, during its long and often dramatic history it has been bombarded and besieged by many foreign powers.
Since the end of the 13th. century, it has been the stronghold and home of the Grimaldi family who first captured it in 1297. The Grimaldi ruled the area first as feudal lords, and from the 17th. century as sovereign princes, but their power was often derived from fragile agreements with their larger and stronger neighbours.
Thus while other European sovereigns were building luxurious, modern Renaissance and Baroque palaces, politics and common sense demanded that the palace of the Monegasque rulers be fortified.
This unique requirement, at such a late stage in history, has made the palace at Monaco one of the most unusual in Europe. Indeed, when its fortifications were finally relaxed during the late 18th. century, it was seized by the French and stripped of its treasures, and fell into decline, while the Grimaldi were exiled for over 20 years.
The Grimaldis' occupation of their palace is also unusual because, unlike other European ruling families, the absence of alternative palaces and land shortages have resulted in their use of the same residence for more than seven centuries. Thus, their fortunes and politics are directly reflected in the evolution of the palace.
Whereas the Romanovs, Bourbons, and Habsburgs could, and frequently did, build completely new palaces, the most the Grimaldi could achieve when enjoying good fortune, or desirous of change, was to build a new tower or wing, or, as they did more frequently, rebuild an existing part of the palace.
Thus, the Prince's Palace reflects the history not only of Monaco, but of the family which in 1997 celebrated 700 years of rule from the same palace.
During the 19th. and early 20th. centuries, the palace and its owners became symbols of the slightly risqué glamour and decadence that were associated with Monte Carlo and the French Riviera.
Glamour and theatricality became reality when the American film star Grace Kelly became a chatelaine of the palace in 1956. In the 21st. century, the palace remains the residence of the current Prince of Monaco.
The Car Crash
'To Catch a Thief' (1954) was an Alfred Hitchcock film with Monte Carlo and its famous casino as the setting. It featured Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, the future Princess Grace of Monaco, as the stars.
There is a scene in the movie where the-then Grace Kelly drives a car very quickly—and dangerously—along the steep winding roads of Monaco that surround the heights of Monte Carlo; a tragic precursor to her actual fate in 1982.
On the 13th. September 1982, Kelly was driving back to Monaco from her country home in Roc Agel. She lost control of her 1971 Rover P6 and drove off the steep, winding road down the 120 foot (37 m) mountainside.
Her daughter Stéphanie, who was in the passenger seat, tried but failed to regain control of the car. Kelly was taken to the Monaco Hospital (later named the Princess Grace Hospital Centre) with injuries to the brain and thorax and a fractured femur.
Doctors believed that she had suffered a minor stroke while driving. She died the following night aged 52 at 10:55 p.m. after Prince Rainier chose to take her off life support.
Stéphanie suffered light concussion and a hairline fracture of a cervical vertebra, and was unable to attend her mother's funeral.

Dixmude
Dixmude (Flemish: Diksmuide) is a Belgian city in the Flemish province of West Flanders.
Most of the area west of the city is a polder riddled with drainage trenches. The major economic activity of the region is dairy farming, producing the famous butter of Diksmuide.
Dixmude in the Great War
At the outset of the Great War, German troops crossed the Belgian border near Arlon, then proceeded rapidly towards the North Sea to secure the French ports of Calais and Dunkirk.
The Battle of the Yser started in October 1914. At the end of October, the Belgians opened the floodgates holding back the River Yser and flooded the area, thereby temporarily stopping the Germans. As a result, the river became a front line throughout the First World War.
The city was first attacked on the 16th. October 1914 and defended by Belgian and French troops. This marked the beginning of the Battle of the Yser.
Colonel Alphonse Jacques led the troops that prevented Dixmude from being taken by the German Army. Despite the heavy Belgian losses, the press, politicians, literary figures and the military itself created propaganda which formed public opinion into making the action appear strategic and heroic.
By the time the fighting ended, Dixmude had been reduced to rubble. It was, however, completely rebuilt in the 1920's.
The 'Trench of Death' (Dutch: Dodengang), about 1.5 km (0.93 mi) from the centre of the city, preserves the trench setting where Belgian soldiers fought under very severe conditions until the final offensive of the 28th. September 1918.
'L’Observateur'
The following poem by Victor Burny was written at Dixmude, Belgium in 1915:
Translation:
'The Observer'
Scanning the green meadows of his Flemish homeland,
The observer is there, on duty in the gloomy light,
Watching the distant flash that threatens
The grey sky as each shell bursts.
He watches each salvo and speaks quietly,
His nails dig into the limestone rubble,
And his eyes, wide open, like dark mirrors,
Stare fixedly at the ruins of a house.
At his command, the guns with sudden bursts,
Make the earth tremble with their brutal discharges,
Concentrating their fire over there on the horizon.
And the humble observer - oh cruel irony -
Watches in agonised silence
As the last sections of walls of his old former
home crumble.

Published in January 1894 by The Historical Publishing Company, author J. W. Buel, this book contains 300 photographs of every aspect of the fair.
The World's Fair: Columbian Exposition (also known as the Chicago World's Fair) was a world's fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World in 1492. At the core of the fair was an area that quickly became known as the White City for its buildings with white stucco siding and its streets illuminated by electric lights.

SNOW GOES
This year's slow melt has meant little to no flowing water in ditches, as seen here west of Brunkild the afternoon of April 1.
This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 28th of August 1915.
During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.
The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images please comment below.

Skinny Grizzly Bear rooting for food. Saw the claws, and saw the teeth and was glad I was staying in the car and using a telephoto.
The bear was about 10 metres from the other side of the road - so I stayed my 3 bus lengths away as recommended. Can't say the same for other people.

FORMAZIONE:
• Eric Adams - voce
• Joey DeMaio - basso
• Karl Logan - chitarra
• Donnie Hamzik - batteria
Geisha and apprentice geisha, (maiko) in Kyoto. The stunning kimomo are 100% silk. The nape of the Maiko's neck has the typical W shape of clear skin, and the scarlet-fringed collar of a maiko's kimono hangs very loosely in the back. These accentuate the nape of the neck, which is considered a primary erotic area in Japanese sexuality.
