PS Phantom was the first regular Manly ferry. She was built in Melbourne in 1859 and steamed to Sydney in May that year. She started the Manly ferry tradition of double-ended design and white funnels with a black top. She also had a dark green hull however the other vessels had black hulls until the bottle green colour was introduced with Dee Why and Curl Curl in 1928.
The white funnel with black tip appeared on all Manly ferries until the 1990's. As steamer funnels tended to be originally all black to hide the soot stains, I would speculate that white funnels (with just black tops to hide the soot) were a early visibility device, particularly for fowl weather or large sea swells.
The two storey stone building in the centre of the photo is Customs House at Semi Circular Quay in its original form (some of these walls remain today within a much-expanded Customs House), and the warehouses at the far right of this picture still stand, now restaurants.
The 1946 built PS Waverley is the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world. In the early 1980s it gave some tours of the Forth from Granton middle pier, seen here on the first of these in 1981. These were repeated for the following two years.
Here she leaves the harbour with a full load of passengers.
PS Waverley is the last seagoing passenger carrying paddle steamer in the world. Built in 1946, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrochar on Loch Long until 1973. Bought by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society (PSPS), she has been restored to her 1947 appearance and now operates passenger excursions around the British coast.
