Ross Bleckner emerged for recognition in the New York art world in the 1980s. His paintings, drawing, and prints have been largely investigations of change, loss, and memory, often addressing the subject of AIDS.
In unusual mixtures of figurative and abstract styles, Bleckner uses symbolic imagery rather than direct representation. His work is visually elusive, as is the case with the screenprint PS. Elegiac in meaning, it plays upon flower shapes, brought together in a floating bouquet, to memorialize lost life. His repertory of commemorative motifs includes, among others, urns, stars, radiant light, and sparkling chandeliers. The flower blossoms of PS recall Monet’s water lilies at Giverny, but they also bring to mind microscopic views of human blood cells—blood representing for Bleckner both life and, if tainted with a virus, death. The tenderness of the image is enhanced by its title, suggestive of “P.S. I love you.”
Bleckner was one of a younger generation of artists in the 1980s who sought to make their gay identity the subject of their art, and their art the vehicle for political activism.

A saxophone playing friend,Ralph, knew the musician Paul Bley, who was playing gigs with Scorpio(JazzRock Fusion) and had an apartment in the West Village. We went to visit unannounced and were kindly welcomed in. I noticed the Coldspring Journal, perused it, decided I wanted one of my poems in it and asked Paul if I might use his name as an aid given that your work is read more seriously if you know someone.
He said yes and I sent some poems to Mr. Plymell...PS 215 was published in #8 1975. One of the 10 poems that got me in to Poets & Writers...life can be an odd set of connections...
Ralph and I later had a falling out since he was staying at my apartment, got on my nerves and didn't pay his share of the utilities.
Pumpkin decorating and pretzels and root beer were used to celebrate the 1,500th instance of students Caught Being Good.
